newsletterWelcome!

I am immensely proud to be the headteacher at Thomas Hardye but particularly so during the past few weeks. The Wizard of Oz surpassed expectations on every level and could not even be put off by the awful weather which led to two postponed performances. It gave a timely reminder of the importance of the performing arts in the life of any school.

Equally impressive is the achievement of three school football teams: the U-14 boys, the U-14

girls and the U-18 boys all made it through to the last eight in the national cup. The U-14 boys were eventually knocked out but the U-14 girls are now in the semi-finals playing away in Chelmsford and the U-18 boys play away in Woking tomorrow.

These are just two examples of what it means to work in such a brilliant school.

Thanks to all contributors for their help with this issue contact [email protected]

COMPANY AT CHRISTMAS Sixth form tutor groups worked together to produce gift hampers for Company at Christmas, an initiative run by the Volunteer Centre Dorset. Their generous donations filled the entire van.

Volunteers offer elderly residents from the local area the opportunity to celebrate the season in the company of other people at Dorchester County Hospital on Christmas Day. They hold a Christmas party with a Christmas dinner and entertainment. Each guest is then given a hamper of gifts and food to take home. Recipients are generally those who live alone and have no family to visit them at Christmas, and this can often be the only gift they receive.

Calculated Success in Maths Competition

Two teams of sixth formers took part in the Ritangle Maths Competition in November. The teams had to answer a new question each day for 25 days, then complete a final set of questions against the clock. The challenges included solving complex problems and writing computer programs. The students had a brilliant day working together on the final problems.

550 schools from across the world took part. We are delighted that our year 12 team submitted the first correct entry. They will receive a hamper of maths-related prizes from the organisers, and they look forward to taking part next year. This is the second win in two years for a Thomas Hardye team: the competition has only been running for three years! We are very proud of the students who took part.

CHARITY BOOST FROM WREATH PROJECT

On Thursday 6th December year 10 students studying business worked with the floristry department at Kingston Maurward to hand-make Christmas wreaths. The students had prepared a business plan calculating revenue, costs, profit and break-even in preparation for the task. The £120 profit they made from selling the wreaths will be donated to AGE UK, the students’ chosen charity.

Thank you to Tracey Nadin and Sue Morgan for their help in organising both the student and staff workshops on that day.

Harry Potter Escape Room

Students from years 9 -12 were invited to take part in an Harry Potter Escape Room event at the end of last term. It was designed by Mrs Morris and held in the library during lunchtime. The participants all had a great time and the winners were awarded a chocolate snitch.

Going Green A range of new recycling initiatives have been set up to reduce the school’s impact on the environment.

The staff in each department are now responsible for sorting their paper, food, plastic bottles, food containers, cardboard, mixed waste and cans, tripling the amount recycled in school.

Crisp packet recycling is available in the main staff base, with a student version coming soon. The sixth form student union’s environment committee have brought recycling bins and boxes into the Sixth Form Centre. Reduction of single-use plastic and wildlife conservation projects to protect and preserve our school surroundings are also under discussion.

If you would like to get involved, or can offer help or advice, please contact Mrs Russell in the English department:

American exchangeThe school now has an exciting exchange programme with Mechanicsburg High School, west of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Read about the latest visit online here. Preparations for the next trip are now being made by Ms Ullah and Mrs. Biddle.
