Collect

Almighty God, who hast given thine only Son to be

unto us both a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of

godly life: give us grace that we may always most

thankfully receive his inestimable benefit; and also dai-

ly endeavour ourselves to follow the blessed steps of

his most holy life; through the same Jesus Christ thy

Son our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the

unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without

end. Amen.

First Reading Acts 3:13-15, 17-19

In those days: Peter said to the people, “The God of

Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob, the God of our

fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you deliv-

ered up and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he

had decided to release him. But you denied the Holy

and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be

granted to you, and killed the Author of life, whom

God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses.

"And now, brethren, I know that you acted in igno-

rance, as did also your rulers. But what God foretold

by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ should

suffer, he thus fulfilled. Repent therefore, and turn

again, that your sins may be blotted out.

PSALM 4:1, 3, 6, 8

R/. Lift up the light of your countenance upon us,

O Lord.

Answer me when I call, O God of my right!

You have given me room when I was in distress. Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer. R/.

But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself;

the LORD hears when I call to him. R/.

There are many who say, “O that we might see some good!

Lift up the light of your countenance upon us, O LORD!” R/.

In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD,

make me dwell in safety. R/.

Second Reading I John 2:1-5a

My little children, I am writing this to you so that you may not sin; but if any one does sin, we have an advo-cate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the expiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. And by this we may be sure that we know him, if we keep his com-mandments. He who says "I know him" but disobeys his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps his word, in him truly love for God is perfected.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Luke 24:35-48

At that time: The two disciples told what had hap-pened on the road, and how Jesus was known to them in the breaking of the bread. As they were saying this, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, "Peace to you." But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. And he said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do question-ings rise in your hearts? See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself; handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have." And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them. Then he said to them, "These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled." Then he opened their minds to un-derstand the scriptures, and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and for-giveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.”

Let us offer our prayers to Almighty God. The reader continues: Father, we pray for thy holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve thee; That thy Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for our Holy Father, Pope Francis, for our Ordi-nary, Jeffrey, our Bishop Michael and for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of thy Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the na-tions of the world; That they may work for thy peace on earth. Give us grace to do thy will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favour in thy sight. Have compassion on (N., N.,...) and those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to (N., N.,…) and all the departed eternal rest; And let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise thee for the Blessed Virgin Mary, for Saint Pe-ter, [for Saint N.] and for all thy saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in thy heavenly kingdom.

Daniel is an Iraqi Kurd who grew up as a Muslim under Saddam Hussein’s campaigns against the Kurds, experiencing gassings and chemical weapons attacks on thousands of his native villages.
