THE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION Sentence for the Day: The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel. Mark 1.15

Hymns: 7.30am Eucharist:- TIS : 634, 589, 83, 611. The Collect for the Day: Bountiful God, through your Son you have called us to repent of our sin, to believe the good news, and to celebrate the coming of your kingdom: teach us, like Christ’s first apostles, to hear the call to discipleship, and, forsaking old ways, to proclaim the gospel of new life to a broken world; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 1st Reading: Jonah 3.1-10 Susan Rowe Michael Smit The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, ‘Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.’ So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, ‘Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!’ And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. Then he had a proclamation made in Nineveh: ‘By the decree of the king and his nobles: No human being or animal, no herd or flock, shall taste anything. They shall not feed, nor shall they drink water. Human beings and animals shall be covered with sackcloth, and they shall cry mightily to God. All shall turn from their evil ways and from the violence that is in their hands. Who knows? God may relent and change his mind; he may turn from his fierce anger, so that we do not perish. ’When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.

Psalm 62. 5-12 (verses said alternately between the reader and congregation)

5. For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him. 6. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. 7. On God rests my deliverance and my honour; my mighty rock, my refuge is in God. 8. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. 9. Those of low estate are but a breath, those of high estate are a delusion; in the balances they go up; they are together lighter than a breath. 10. Put no confidence in extortion, and set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, do not set your heart on them. 11. Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God, 12. and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord. For you repay to all according to their work. 2nd Reading 1 Corinthians 7. 29-31 Ruth Southgate Sarah Davies I mean, brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have wives be as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away. Gospel : Mark 1. 14-20 Now after John (the Baptist) was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’ As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people.’ And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

Dear parish family,

I am inviting and encouraging you to purchase a ticket to

attend the Screenagers movie night on the 8th of February

2018 at 5.30pm.

Screenagers is a film which explores the effects growing up in a digital

age is having on young people. The changing face of technology

with often challenging consequences for families is a concern for many

of us with teens and children in our lives. This is certainly a worthy

concept for reflection and dialogue in the Church where we are

called to care for people of all ages.

Janie and Howard have teamed up with Fanforce so that if enough

tickets are sold we will host the screening of this movie in the Maheno

room and offer it as a community event for others in the local area

who may benefit from reflecting on the film together.

The Third Sunday after the Epiphany – Sunday 21 January 2018 Jonah 3.1-10; Psalm 62.5-12;1 Corinthians 7.29-31; Mark 1.14-20 The Psalmist tells us today to wait in silence for God. This does not mean, do nothing, but rather it means that we should rid ourselves of all other distractions so that we can focus on the most important thing: God. By doing this we prepare ourselves for when we are called by the Spirit to play a part in God’s mission. Pray that the Spirit will help you to remove all distractions so that you can focus on the most important thing of all: God. Pray for the Anglican Church of Melanesia, giving thanks for the work they do to further God’s mission in the world. Text: Robert McLean, Partnerships Coordinator © Anglican Board of Mission, 2018
