A Message from Cantor Socolof

As this is being written, in mid-August, the Summer Olympics continue apace. Every day, we are treated to athletic achievements that excite and inspire us. What we don’t see, of course, are the many hours of dedication, practice and flat-out work that allowed the athletes to perform such impressive feats. In their own way, the High Holidays are analogous to the Olympics. They are a periodic assembly of Jews around the world (as opposed to from around the world) that we hope will excite and inspire us. Like the Olympics, the High Holidays involve a tremendous amount of work on the part of a lot of people. Officers, committee members and other congregants agonize over plans and make every effort to see that the service runs smoothly so that those in attendance can concentrate on the spiritual challenge rather than on the mechanical details. September this year coincides with the month of Elul, the month on the Hebrew calendar that precedes the High Holidays. Elul is characterized by the rabbis as an opportunity for us to get into the right frame of mind for the High Holidays. Just as an athlete would not go into a competition without having trained and warmed up, we ought not to go into the High Holidays without having prepared ourselves. The shofar is blown at the weekday morning services in Elul to apprise people of the approach of the Yom Tovim and the need to get ready. Let us not lose the opportunity to be at our best and fully ready when the High Holidays arrive. Let us use Elul as a training ground so that when we come to services we will be in the right frame of mind and heart. Let us get a head start on forgiving others and asking them to forgive us. Let us apply ourselves to repentance, prayer and acts of charity now so that when the High Holidays arrive, we are already well into the swing of things. Let us, like so many Olympic athletes, be moved by what our own efforts can bring us to accomplish. Cantor Socolof

Temple Beth El President’s Message As summer ends, I would like to say thank you to our lay leaders and speakers during Erev Shabbat services. We appreciate you stepping up to the bimah.

The possessions we have stored at the Globe Mill from our sale of 1607 Genesee St. need to find a new home. If you know of someone interested in looking at any items, please contact the office.

I was happy to see members of both congregations attend a special luncheon to bid farewell to loyal congregants, Chuck and Rita Manning. It was a bittersweet event. Their children and grandchildren took part in the Shabbat service, which made it a very special occasion. We wish them all the best and will always remember their contributions to Temple.

Preparations are underway for the High Holiday services. Many hours are spent arranging and contacting congregants to assure everything runs smoothly. It still amazes me what happens behind the scenes.

As autumn approaches, I hope we can look forward to working together as a community and share upcoming opportunities.

Shalom, Marsha

Temple Beth El Executive Director’s Message Dear Friends, It is again time to share the High Holy Days with our family, friends and our fellow congregants at the Jewish Community Center. Rosh Hashanah – the first day of Tishri 5777 falls on October 3, 2016 this year. The first ten days of the New Year are set aside as the ―Ten Days of Penitence‖ starting with Rosh Hashanah and ending with Yom Kippur – The Day of Atonement. This is the season for reflection and rededication of our daily life, of our Temple, and our family and friends near and dear to us. Let us rededicate ourselves to continuing to perform mitzvahs and supporting those in need. At the same time we will be thankful for our blessings, and our ability to find the strength for any difficult days ahead. May we all observe Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year, a day completely devoted to prayer and fasting. May our prayers be answered as we ask for forgiveness of our sins and pray to be inscribed in the Book of Life for a year of good health, days of pleasure and giving to others. We look forward to welcoming Cantor Larry Fader to lead our services along with Elliot Rabin and our congregants who help to make our services so special. Stan joins me in wishing one and all the best of everything for 5777.

Temple Beth El Sisterhood News

Temple Beth El Sisterhood is proud to have the opportunity to support Kehillat Netzach Israel, a congregation and school in Ashkelon, Israel. This is part of the Masorti movement. Our NOAM youth in the Purim Parade with Ashkelon Mayor, Mr. Beni Vaknin. Rabbi Gustavo Surazski writing the Children’s Megilah which we read from this Purim. Our Bar/Bat Mitzva group laying tefillin at the Masorti Kotel in Jerusalem.

Our regular Tikkun Olam activity, picking fruit (Katif) for needy families. One of our soldiers with a generously donated Purim Package (Mishloa’ch Manot). Our annual Nearly New Bazaar to raise funds for book bags and school supplies.

Dear Sisterhood at Temple Beth El, We have 135 children in our Afternoon Day Care Program which gives parents the opportunity to work a full day.

The children from the preschool stay and have a hot lunch. We provide special activities for them in the afternoon including Pet and Music Therapy. We try to find relaxing programs for our children who had a very difficult year with the war with Gaza. The children get frightened with heliocopters in the sky and loud noises.

We are also involved in many Tikun Olam Programs including packages for our soldiers, picking fruit for the needy, Bazaar of nearly new items and helping families waiting for their conversions to be accepted and do not have citizenship yet.

Our Tikun theme program is Discrimination. We hold our first lecture on discrimination of people who speak different languages. The second lecture is on discrimination of Ethiopian new immigrants. We are also arranging a special Ethiopian dinner with the lecture which will help a new Ethiopian Immigrant.

We have a very active Youth Movement here as well which starts in the first grade. We thank you again for your support in the past. Please come visit us any time you are in Israel.

The next cleaning date will be scheduled soon depending on the weather. COST

Jewels of Elul The Hebrew month of Elul begins on September 4th. There is a great Jewish tradition to dedicate the 29 days in the month of Elul to study and prepare for the coming high holy days. The time is supposed to challenge us to use each day as an opportunity for growth and discovery. While conceptually the notion is noble, it was clear that acting on it was a bit more challenging. Enter . . . Jewels of Elul. For the past several years, Craig Taubman has collected short stories, anecdotes and introspection from some fascinating people, including Eli Winkelman, Desmond Tutu, the Dali Lama, Sarah Lefton, Eli Wiesel, Deepak Chopra, Pastor Rick Warren, Kirk Douglas, Rev. Ed Bacon, Rabbi David Wolpe, Ruth Messinger, Jeffrey Katzenberg and over 100 other inspired voices. You can sign up to receive this Jewels of Elul at www.jewelsofelul.com/receive-a-jewel-a-day/
