• Near the modern town• of Selcuk in Turkey

• 50 km south of Izmir in• 550 B.C.

Purpose

• Built by Chersiphron and ordered to be built by King Croesus in 550 B.C.

• Used as a marketplace and a religious center

• Dedicated to goddess Artemis

Uniqueness

• Built by colonists of Ephesus

• Took 120 years to be built

• Made out of marble

• Foundation was a mix of coal and wood

Ancient Foresight

• Copies of the statues from the temple were made, mostly by the Romans

• The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus is one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World
