IMPORTANT NOTICEMEETING START TIME

BACK TO 7:00 P.M.Zarda’s decided that the changing of closing timewasn’t such a good idea and we are back to our normalmeeting start time of 7:00 p.m. with the restaurant closing at 9:00.

A Busy April

We are closing out one of the busiest months we have everhad in the Key Camp. We started on April 4th at our regular camp meeting with Mike Calvert giving awonderful presentation on Jabez Smith. On Friday April5 Commander Speicher spoke to 60 sixth graders fromth,

Pembroke School at the Wornall House. He told them about various weapons and equipment used during the Civil War. Then on Saturday April 6 the Key Campth,

participated in:

The Alexander Majors’ Home Event

The Key Camp hosted a living history campsite and a weapons and relic display on the grounds of the MajorsHouse. The camp was set up Friday evening andconsisted of 11 tents forming one-half of a companystreet. The 3 Battery Missouri Light Artillery CS,rd

the camp sponsored reenactment unit, brought out their6-pounder field piece. The weather was good but a bitwindy. During the day, there were musket-firingdemonstrations with Travis Bullock doing a great job asour infantryman. The cannon was fired numerous times forthe enjoyment of the crowd. All told, the day was atremendous success and a feather in our caps. The staffof the museum was extremely appreciative of our efforts onopening weekend.

Wornall Carriage House Project

The next Saturday, April 13, found Key Camp members LeeCrutchfield, Tom Hill, Dan Peterson, Lane Smith, MikeSmith, Spike Speicher, Jim Thornton, and John Weirreporting to the Wornall House Museum for the first phase of our project. The original projectwas to paint the Carriage House over two weekends.Commander Speicher and Compatriot Greg Miller, a professional house painter, surveyed the project anddecided it was not within the realm of possibility topaint the entire structure in the time we had allowed. The project was scaled back to painting just the front

and west walls. Phase I was completed on Saturday April13 when the two walls were scraped, sanded, caulked, andprimed. The door on the west wall was framed and fittedso it would work properly. My thanks to the eight menthat showed up for all their hard work.

had to do was paint the two walls. Unfortunately, we did not get Phase II completed as I had hoped. Three men showed up to paint and we got the front wallcompletely painted as well as the first floor section ofthe west wall. We will have to schedule another paintday in a few weeks to finish off the west wall.

The Carriage House looks so much prettier for the herb sale than it did before. My special thanks to 1st

Lieutenant Commander Lee Crutchfield, 2nd

Lieutenant Commander John Weir, and Commander SpikeSpeicher for all their work on Phase II.

Missouri History Day

Mark your calendar for May 8 . That isth

Missouri History Day on the Lone Jack Battlefield. We have participated in this event for several

years and we have been invited back again this year. The day is designed to expose schoolchildren (8th

graders) from several area schools to various elements of Missouri history. There are about 14 stations that the kids will rotate through includingOxen, Women of the 60’s, Order #11, Fur Trapping, PonyExpress, and Travel in the 60’s. The Key Camp provides apresentation on WBTS weapons and it is one of thechildren’s favorites. We need to report no later than8:30 a.m. to have time to set up. The Historic Lone Jack organization will provide a free lunch. If memoryserves correctly, we end the day about 3:00 in theafternoon. I will have a sign-up sheet at the meeting.

Confederate Memorial Day

Every year our friends in the Missouri Divisioncelebrate Confederate Memorial Day on t h e Saturday closest to President Jefferson Davis’ birthday. Our president’s birthday is June 3 , rd

which means this year’s event will be held on SaturdayJune 1 . The 2013 celebration is the 114st th

anniversary of this Missouri Division event. Theceremony honors the 800 souls buried in the Confederate Cemetery at the Confederate Memorial

State Historic Site a t H i g g i n s v i l l e , Missouri. This was the site of the originalConfederate Veterans home for the state. The cemetery, the chapel, and one of the cottages are all that remain ofthe home. The grounds that the veterans used to walk havebeen preserved and are incorporated in the beautiful site. The Key Camp has been involved in this event for about eleven years. Members wear their camp shirts or Confederate uniforms. In the past, we havecontributed men to the Color Guard for the Posting andRetiring of our flags. We also set up a shelter tent incase of extreme heat/sun or rain so bring folding chairsto sit on. Also, bring your lunch as family picnics are a common occurrence at this event. For thosethat would like to attend, we need to arrive by 10:00 a.m. The Higginsville exit off I-70 is Exit 49 or Highway 13. Go north on 13 through Higginsville and turn right on Highway AA. The entrance to thestate historic site is just past the Missouri Veterans Cemetery on AA. One of the most moving portions of the event is the Ancestor Recognition Ceremony. Anyone who wants to recognize their Confederateancestor (or any veteran) is given a rose and is allowedto give the soldier’s name, rank, and unit. The person then proceeds to the Lion of Lucerne Confederatemonument and places the rose on the monument. W h a t abeautiful site to see all the roses on that monument. Iwould like to make a motion at the meeting that the KeyCamp becomes an official sponsor for the event by sendinga donation of $15.00. That will get our camp name inthe printed program. I will have more information and a sign-up sheet at the meeting.
