• Tangelos differ from oranges because they have much looser skin and are easier to peel

• Tangelos are easily distinguished from oranges by their characteristic knob at the top of the fruit

• There are many varieties of tangelos, including Nova, Sunrise, Seminole, Thornton, and Ugli fruits

• The two most popular varieties of tangelos are Orlando tangelos and Minneola tangelos

• An Orlando tangelo is a cross between a Duncan grapefruit and a Dancy tangerine, created in 1911 in California and Arizona

• This tangelo is noted for its juiciness, mild and sweet flavor, its flat round shape, and large size

• Orlando tangelos do not have the large knob at the top of the fruit

• Orlando tangelos have a pebbled texture with very few seeds and a tight-fitting rind

• The fruit matures from mid-November to February

• A Minneola tangelo is also a cross between a Duncan grapefruit and a Dancy tangerine

• It was created in 1931 and was released by the USDA in Orlando, Florida, but was named after Minneola, Florida

• These tangelos are characterized by a stem-end neck, that makes the fruit appear bell-shaped. Because of this, it is sometimes called the Honeybell

• The peel is very loose and easy to remove to get to the juicy fruit inside

• The peel is a bright-reddish-orange color when mature

• The fruit matures December through February, and generally gets larger than Orlando tangelos

• Tangelos grow on trees

• The trees are large and more cold-tolerant than the grapefruit but not quite as hardy as the mandarin

• Most tangelos grow in Florida

• Tangelos are best eaten raw, or even pressed for just their juices

• Tangelos can be a very healthy snack because they are abundant in Vitamin C and folate but contain very little calories

• They are also good sources of potassium and B Vitamins
