YFC starts new school year with prayerBy McKenzie Smith

On September 23, Vienna High School’s Youth For Christ (YFC) hosted their annual See You At The Pole (SYATP) out by the flagpole. Each year, members of YFC, along with members of the community, join together in the early morning to pray for the upcoming school year.

SYATP is a nationwide event where schools all across the country gather around their flagpole and pray over their school and community for the upcoming year at the same time.

This year VHS Superintendent, Mr. Joshua Stafford, greeted the YFC members and community at the event and Wyatt Graves gave the

beginning prayer. Senior Miranda Brookshier and Junior Hannah Loyd then played their guitars and led the group into several worship songs. Senior Taylor Bundren spoke at the event and gave a brief devotional.

After the devotion, the group joined together and Senior Shawna Oliver started the group prayer and the group then took turns praying for their country, their community, and their school before Junior McKenzie Smith ended it.

Junior Wyatt Graves said, “See You At The Pole is a great ministry and helps the school to become more connected to both the community and God.”

Junior Hannah Loyd and Senior Miranda Brookshier play their guitars as they lead the community and students in songs of worship at See You At The Pole on September 23.

Photography Club makes new debut at VHSBy Taylor Bundren On September 25, the VHS Photography Club held their first meeting. Photography Club returns to VHS after many years. The club has big plans for this year. The members are looking forward to competing in local contests and displaying some of their works at VHS. Mr. Kerley, Mrs. Adams, and Mrs. Hunsaker are the sponsors for

the photography club. Each sponsor has an interest in photography and is excited to work with the club members. Mr. Peak has a lot of experience with photography, and he will also be assisting with Photography Club and sharing some of his knowledge. Photography Club Sponsor Mrs. Adams said, “My goal is just to encourage the students to be

interested in and learn more about photography. I hope that they can really enjoy it, and I want to see where it goes. I hope that we will be able to participate in local competitions to give the club some momentum for future years.” Sponsor Mr. Kerley said, “I’m really excited for this upcoming year. I’m glad that the Photography Club made a comeback, and I can’t

wait to see the students get creative in the different competitions we’ll enter. I think the students are just as excited as the sponsors.” The VHS Photography Club has a strong foundation of both eager student members and talented sponsors who are ready for the upcoming school year.

By Chloe Wright On October 7, the VHS Student

Council members attended the Pathway Leadership Conference. Student Council Sponsors Mr. Giffin and Mrs. Palmer took the group to Carterville High School, where the conference was held.

The Pathway Leadership Conference is a seminar for young leaders. The conference was

created to improve the leadership skills of students and to encourage them to go back into their school and lead. Mike Wood, spokesman of the conference, taught about what it takes to be a leader in a fast-paced and energetic manner.

Several activities throughout the day were related to team building and problem solving.

These activities forced students out of their comfort zones to work with people whom they have never before met. Students gave speeches in front of their peers, worked in groups, and had lots of fun.

Student Council sponsor Mrs. Palmer said, “I thought the Pathways to Leadership was a wonderful conference. The student

council members got to step out of their norm and interact with other students.”

Mrs. Palmer went on to say, “I believe our students, and myself included, were given the tools to become better leaders in our school and in our everyday lives.”

VHS volleyball team “sets” into a busy seasonBy Shawna Oliver

The Lady Eagles volleyball team is in full swing as the season continues.

The first game of the season was played on September 2 against Carmi-White County. The Lady Eagles played a strong first game.

The Lady Eagles Varsity team played in the Carrier Mills Invitational Tournament on September 12. Although they received last place, the team played hard against several teams.

The annual Pink Out Game was held on September 14 against Goreville. JV and Varsity played intense games, but they couldn’t pull off a win.

On September 26, the Lady Eagles Varsity played in the Herrin Tournament. They were put in a tough pool, competing with teams such as Herrin and Mt. Vernon.

The Lady Eagles are coached by Jamie Kerley and Harley McIlwain. They are first year coaches, and they began coaching just as the season started. Along with the new coaching staff, there are many brand new members. Including 13 new freshman and one new senior.

Coach Kerley is optimistic about the team. He said, “As a whole, the season is going well.

I tell them all the time, that your success is not based on wins and loses, but laying a solid foundation from this point forward.”

Senior volleyball player Summer Myers said, “Every day our progress is getting better than the day before.”

Coach Kerley added, “I coach the best group of young ladies. With their continued hard work and determination, they will achieve great success as a team and in their

Vienna-Goreville Eagles tackle another seasonBy McKenzie Smith

On August 29, the Vienna-Goreville football team kicked off their very first game of the 2015 season against the Eldorado Eagles. The game did not go as well as hoped, and they finished with a final score of 0-52.

The team picked up their first win on September 19 where they beat the Foxes of Hamilton County with a score of 30-28. This win was Vienna-Goreville’s first win in the past two years.

This year is unique for V-G football because it’s not composed of only boys this season. Freshman girl Anna Thompson has joined the football team.

Anna said, “I’ve always wanted to play football ever since I was little. It’s really different being the only girl on the team, but they all treat me like another one of the guys.”

Anna went on to say, “I want to be an encouragement to all the other

girls who want to play football but don’t have the courage. Just do it. You’ll be glad you did.”

Overall, the football team is doing better than they did last year, and they hope to keep on improving individually and as a team with the direction of Head Coach Brian Trambley.

Senior Dell Cantrell said, “So far, this year has been a building year on what we learned and practiced last year. Now we have to

put it to good use.”The team will have their last

home game of the season against Carmi-White County on October 17. The game will be their annual Pink Out game and also Senior Recognition.

During the Senior Recognition, the football seniors along with the cheerleading seniors will be honored with their parents for giving their time and effort for playing football.

personal lives.”“This year of volleyball has

definitely been a good one. We’ve had our ups and downs, but I definitely wouldn’t want it to go any other way. My favorite part of this season is JV’s win against NCOE as I was not expecting it at all. We haven’t won as many games as I wanted, but I’ve definitely become closer to all of the new team members and my coaches.” Junior McKenzie Smith said.

VHS sophomore dives into many adventuresBy Quinn McBride

From zip-lining to scuba diving, Sophomore Christian Alford has done it all. In the past year alone, he’s gone hang gliding, scuba diving, and zip-lining, and even went swimming with a six-foot long bull shark, unprotected by any cages, for nearly 15 minutes!

Christian goes on all these adventures with his father, Chris Alford. Lately, the two have been practicing their scuba diving at Mermet Springs. They visit there as often as possible, which is usually at least once a weekend. Christian says his favorite part is seeing the wildlife below the surface. “Honestly, there’s nothing more beautiful than looking at the

environment under the water,” Christian said.

Even though Christian enjoys scuba diving, it’s not his favorite thing to do. He says his favorite trip was the first cruise he ever went on. On that cruise, he went snorkeling off the coast of Tortuga in the Bahamas.

Christian and his father’s upcoming trips include white water kayaking on class five rapids for a week in Utah. Christian said that he is really thankful to have these opportunities and to go on these adventures.

Christian plans to pursue his love of sailing and scuba diving in the future.

Christian Alford, his father Chris, and his cousin Ethan hone their sailing skills at Kentucky Lake. This is only one of the several exciting adventures Christian and his father embark upon.

The VHS Senior Beta Club officers (from left to right) Ryan Bradley, Miranda Brookshier, Allison Allbritten, and Amanda Ferguson are excited to start their new year of service.

Beta Club actively serves communityBy Quinn McBride

As the school year goes on, Beta Club elected new officers and continues to work on many different community service projects. The VHS Beta Club has been helping out at the Faith Alive Thrift Store for many years. Ever since this school year started, there have been many after school service trips there, as well as some service hours during the school day. Along with working weekly at Faith Alive, some Beta Club members have the opportunity to tutor Vienna Grade School students. Club members spend an hour after school every week day helping VGS students with their homework. On October 2 and 3, some Betas helped librarian Mrs. Sparks at a booth in the Fall Festival Fair. These students helped run the booth so that people could donate to the VHS library. On October 10, many Beta members assisted with Zombie Dodgeball. This was an all day

event created by the Invisible Pain Organization. Beta Club members donated their time by helping with concessions and by dressing up as zombies to participate in Zombie Dodgeball. Beta Club also plans to paint pumpkins on October 27. Members get creative and paint pumpkins, and then the pumpkins are donated for the residents at Autumn Ridge. This year, Beta Club members voted in 4 new officers. Beta’s new senior officers are Ryan Bradley, Miranda Brookshier, Allison Allbritten, and Amanda Ferguson. Beta Club Officers are responsible for providing the VHS Beta Club members with different service projects. They also make many important monetary decisions. Mrs. Bradley, the Beta Club sponsor, said, “All students who wish to enter Beta must have a cumulative grade point average of 4.5 or higher. New members may join in October or January.”

VHS student plans to study abroadBy Emily Pope and Taylor Bundren

VHS freshman Nathan Bailey plans to leave the small town of Vienna to study abroad in Amsterdam, Netherlands starting next school year. Nathan attended the 2015 Globetrotters trip. The group went to Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, and London. Soon after the club returned to the U.S., Nathan decided that he was interested in studying abroad, specifically in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Nathan has attended many leadership conferences and said he has always been interested

in standing out and becoming independent. Nathan is excited to live in a foreign country independently. This past summer he stayed in San Francisco for a few weeks by himself, and he’s ready to have the chance to live similarly in the Netherlands. He chose the city of Amsterdam to study abroad because he is particularly interested in studying foreign languages, and he hopes to begin learning how to speak Dutch. Nathan plans to spend a whole school year immersed in Amsterdam culture.

Art Club members show their creativity at annual Art in the ParkBy Emily Pope

VHS Art club participated in the annual Art in the Park held in Vienna City Park on September 12.

While they were there, they sold items such as homemade necklaces and prints of their own original artwork. Some of the club members also showcased their artwork.

A few students put their skills to the test by painting faces and

drawing henna tattoos on some of the attendees.

Mr. Palmer, Art Club Sponsor was very pleased with the events. He said, “The students did excellent, and they represented Vienna High School very well.”

He also said that the Art Club will prepare for next year’s Art in the Park and will attend it as well.

Art Club member Emily Pope painted faces at Art in the Park on September 12. Pictured above is Mr. Palmer’s daughter, Maddie, enjoying the event.

Freshman Nathan Bailey discovered his love of traveling abroad on the 2015 Globetrotters trip. Nathan is pictured above at Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France.

So you’re in high school now...By McKenzie Smith

The upperclassmen give their advice to the new VHS freshmen on how to survive life at Vienna High School.

“If you are a freshman athlete, do your

freshman job and take it to the bus. Older classmen will not be happy otherwise.”~Alena Cowsert

“High school goes by extremely fast, so

enjoy it. Even if it’s overdramatized and stressful, there will

always be better days. Being a freshman has

its downfalls, but trust me, you’ll find yourself at one point or another

wanting to go back. Enjoy being involved,

widen your social circle, take everything in with an open mind,

and watch yourself and everyone around you grow. High school is

full of memories you’ll never forget.”~Emily Scruggs

“If you stop in the middle of the hallway, I don’t care if you are bigger than me, I will

run you over.”~Tia McLaughlin

“You can’t get around A.R. Don’t fight it.”

~Makayla Holder

“If you’re one minute late, you might as

well be twenty-five minutes late; so go grab yourself some McDonald’s or go

participate in a P.E. class.”

~Dell Cantrell
