begin as early as grade 9 and is designed to allow a pupil to earn a high school diploma while also earning up to

60 transferable college credits toward a four-year degree from a Michigan public or private university, an

associate degree from a community college, a professional certification, the Michigan Early Middle College

Association (MEMCA) technical certificate, or the right to participate in a registered apprenticeship.

Student acceptance into the program is ultimately up to the administrator’s discretion. Criteria taken into consideration

includes attendance, discipline, grades, success in previous h.s./college courses, attitude, and work ethic. What are the

high school rules and requirements? Early College students take on additional requirements for graduation beyond the

traditional high school requirements. These include 40 hours of job shadowing/clinical experience or internship OR 100

hours of verified community service, OR a 70-hour combination of the two; a math OR math-related course in the fifth

year; and the minimum successful completion of 15 college credits. For more information, contact Mr. Horodyski at 588-

Page 7: The Talon - Farwell Elementary School · Mrs. Brown’s English 12 Has Conference Chat with Author Daniel Coyle Mrs. Brown's third and fifth hour English 12 classes had the opportunity

The Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation offers a $2,000, non-renewable scholarship to Michigan high school

graduating seniors. Winners are selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, financial need, and dedication to the civil

rights principles of Rosa L. Parks, whose historic stand against racial prejudice in 1955 brought her national recognition.

The Foundation was established in 1980 to provide equal-opportunity scholarships to Michigan high school seniors.

Scholarships to be applied to tuition, books and/or fees, for first year of college only (cannot be applied to room/board or

other expenses). A key determining factor in judging is ‘financial need.’ Students with numerous other scholarships

(especially full-tuition scholarships) will receive a very low rating for ‘financial need,’ virtually eliminating them from

contention for this scholarship. Because of this, these students may choose not to complete the Rosa Parks Scholarship

Foundation application process.

APPLICANTS MUST: 1. Graduate by August 2020.*

2. Have GPA of 2.5 or above.

3. Describe financial need.

4. Complete application form and essay.**

5. Document community activities.

6. Furnish official copies of high school transcript and ACT or SAT results.

8. Furnish two letters of recommendation (at least one from a school representative; also suggest clergy, community

and/or civic representative).

* Applicants must be graduating from high school in spring of 2020, with plans to enter college as a full time freshman in

the fall. You are not eligible for this scholarship at this time if you are participating in an Early College Program (13th

year of high school). You must wait until you actually graduate from high school.

**An Essay question is last item on application. If you want to get a head start, here is the essay requirement.

Please write an essay of 200-300 words (include a heading/topic). Segregation was the defining social issue when Rosa

Parks took her historic stand. Describe a social issue that you think should be addressed today. How will YOU use the

principles of Rosa Parks to address it? ALL REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET, OR

APPLICATION WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. The deadline for filing is Sunday, March 1, 2020. Scholarship

winners will be announced in mid-May. The application link can be found at https://www.rosaparksscholarship.org/.

The Clare County Habitat for Humanity Scholarship for $300 is awarded to a high school senior attending college in

2020-2021. The application includes general statements regarding area of study, community service, hobbies, goals, etc.

CCHFH must receive the application by March 2, 2020. See Mrs. Rohdy for an application or use the link on your

Skyward account to apply.

The Isabella Bank Scholarship for $750 is available to a graduating senior from Farwell High School that demonstrates

financial need, as expressed in the applicant’s written essay. The application asks students to document their community

involvement through service/volunteerism, their extracurricular activities, and their future plans. Must have a 3.0 gpa or

higher to qualify. Preference is given to students based upon the degree of their service to his/her community and their

leadership shown through that involvement. The closing deadline is March 4 at 4:00 p.m. Go to

https://www.mpacf.org/isabellabank to apply.

The Jason Parrott Scholarship Fund for $500 is awarded to a student that demonstrates a need for special materials

or equipment that would otherwise prevent them from continuing their education OR be a special needs student

pursuing higher education. The student’s parents or guardian shall reside in Isabella County. First time applicants

shall be accepted into a college, university, trade school or other institution of higher learning for the 2020 -21 school

year. Financial need shall not be a factor in the selection process. The closing deadline is March 4. Go to

https://www.mpacf.org/parrott to apply.

The Harry E. Tope Memorial Aviation Scholarship Fund for $1500 awards a scholarship to a selected person to

advance his or her education or skills in the field of aviation. This Fund was established to honor the memory of

Harry E. Tope Jr. and his passion for flying; to provide financial assistance to worthy individuals who wish to pursue

a career or hobby in aviation and to promote continued interest and education for private pilots. Applicants must be

interested in advancing their education in the field of aviation, OR be interested in advancing their career skills in the

field of aviation. Applicants must be residents of the Mid-Michigan Area (Isabella County, Gratiot County, Mecosta
