Avocado Festival

Attendance at this year’s Avocado Festival was very good. Merchandise sales were the highest in the last few years.

This year we reserved an area in the front for the Poster Cars and placed a couple of posters in front of them in hopes of driving poster sales and interest in the car show. It seems to have worked, for we sold a lot of posters.

The weather was great and we all had a nice time enjoying Spring and the Avocado Festival.

Skilled NursingMini Car Show

As we have done for years, on Saturday, April 6th, we presented a mini car show for the residents of the Skilled Nursing Home.

They always enjoy reminiscing about days gone by, and sometimes a particular car will summon some great old memories and stories.

The nursing home served hamburgers and hot dogs and provided live entertainment.

R.O.M.E.O.Retired Old Men Eating Out

The ROMEO Lunch group met at the Fresco Grill in Bonsall on Tuesday, May 30th.

ROMEO is not usually held this late in the month, but this month, the date was set to fall on the same day as the trip to K1 Racing. This allowed us to gather for lunch and then caravan to Carlsbad to the racetrack.

Anticipation of what was in store for us, racing the Go Karts, steered the conversation, as we were all wanting to obtain any and all driving tips in advance.

Among other things, we discussed how fast each of us have driven cars in our wild and crazy youth. And we all lived to tell about it.

The May ROMEO will be held at 11:30 AM on Tuesday, May 16th at Siggys located at 26820 Jefferson Ave, Murrieta. We decided not to have it too close to the car show.

And for some of us, with fishing season approaching, we dicsussed salt-water fishing and Shoe’s new boat, salmon fishing in the Pacific Northwest, and fly fishing in Montana and Idaho.

In other words, it was really a “guys” lunch.

Go Kart Racingat K1 Speed in Carlsbad

After the ROMEO lunch, those who wanted to go race Go Karts caravanned to Carlsbad. The weather was a little damp so none of us drove our vintage cars.

K1 Speed Go Kart is an indoor track with electric powered Go Karts. They are very fast and quite responsive.

We all expected that Jim Binford (who has raced Go Karts before and who races Porches on real tracks), would out do us all. But to our surpirse, Dana Meadows was a sleeper, showing us all how it was done.

We had three races, each race consisting of 14 laps around the track. One races against the clock, not the other racers. But we are all on the track at the same time and have to be able to pass the slower cars.

There were spin-outs and crashes, but we all walked away with smiles on our faces.

We each improved our lap times on successive races. Below are the standings after the three races. Bill Muno and Fred Ragland only drove in the first race, so they are not included in the final results.

A Change of Scenery

In April, the ladies headed north a short distance. We lunched at the upscale Journey’s End, located in the Club House at Pechanga’s Golf Club.

From our table we had a view of the patio and golf course. The menu, with cute golf titles, put a new twist on old favorites.

We caught up on family events and summer vacation travel plans. It was another fun event.

On Tuesday, May 14th we will make a little change in our routine and gather at 10:30 a.m. at the Main Street Cafe. RSVP to Connie at conniewaugh@sbcglobal.net.

A big “ Thank You” to Connie Waugh for continuously finding locations and coordinating all of the details for our luncheons.

Cars and Drivers Needed!Last year Mark Hoffman provided his Rolls Royce, driven by Ron Mintle, on a chauffeured ride for a day of wine tasting in Fallbrook. The wine tasting experience was such a big hit that they want to do it again. It raised a lot of money for the Food Pantry. They need a very nice car with driver, the car should accommodate four passengers.

Also being auctioned is a private helicopter tour of San Diego. Again, what is needed is a very nice car with driver to accommodate four. The car and driver will chauffeur the winners from Fallbrook to Oceanside Airport for a one hour air tour at dusk. After the tour, drive them back to 127 on Main Avenue for dinner and then drive them home.

Also needed is a nice 60’s or 70’s car to be the teaser car on an insured hole-in-one contest.
