With our special planting machine it is possible to plant

fl ower bulbs under grass in park-like settings, roundabouts,

lawns etc. For the past few years we have used our machine

for large plantings in the City of Brampton, City of Toronto,

City of Kitchener, the NCC in Ottawa and for private

residential customers. We can offer our planting service to

all customers; a very cost-effective method to plant large

quantities of fl ower bulbs in grass areas with a striking

result.

For under grass planting it is quite important to choose

early fl owering varieties, bearing in mind that the bulbs need

some time to produce seeds and die back (approx. 6-8 weeks

after fl owering). The seeds of for example Chionodoxa or

Scilla will fi nd a good breeding ground between the parent

plants, and will germinate quickly. This will result in an

increase of the number of bulbs and therefore, in time,

in substantially more fl owers. The mechanical method of

planting will produce straight lines of bulbs, a sight which

does not appeal to everyone. This can easily be solved by

adding some bulbs here and there by hand. The result will be

a much softer and more natural look.

Working of the machineThe machine is a combination of planter and tractor, manned

by one person. A large container holds the bulbs, with at the

bottom two belts to deliver the bulbs to the ‘plant feet’.

Two vertical rotating knives cut the turf open, just before the

plant feet. The feet ‘dive’ into the ground and fold the turf open.

At the same time the two belts release the bulbs, which fall

into the soil and get covered.

The machine also puts the turf back in position with minimal

damage (see photos).

In addition to the driver, assistance is required from one or

two persons to handle the bulbs and to direct the planter to

the exact location.

The most suitable bulbs for mass planting in grass are early

daffodils and narcissi, Galanthus (snowdrops), Scilla siberica,

Crocus, Muscari and Chionodoxa.

We have found that mixtures of these groups also work very

well (see pages 6-9).

Mechanical planting of fl owerbulbs

4 www.tradewindsinternational.ca

Page 5: The Synthesis of Spring - Product Catalogue 2011

Plant widthThe width of each plant foot is 45 cm. Combined the two feet

plant approx. 1 meter (3 ft). The tractor itself is a little wider

than the planting machine, so a total width of 120 cm (4 ft) is

required. A second option is a single planting machine with

only one plant foot. This machine plants the bulbs 50 cm

wide, and is pulled by a mini tractor of 80 cm wide. With this

machine it is possible to plant in areas that are diffi cult to

reach.

Condition of the soilFor a good result of the mechanical planting it is important

that the turf is in good condition; well rooted and fi rm. The

grass must be cut short to achieve a maximum result with

minimal damage. Also the soil should be free from roots and

rubble. It is therefore recommended to ask our specialists to

inspect the plant location and look at the possibilities.

SlopesA special machine is available to plant the bulbs on a

sloping area. The principle of the machine is similar; the

only difference is the variable angle of the plant feet. With

this machine it is possible to adjust the planting angle to the

surface, resulting in an even planting providing that the slope

is not too steep.

Plant capacityUnder the right circumstances it is possible to plant

10.000 daffodils or 25.000 crocuses/miscellaneous per hour.

MixturesMany different mixtures can be used in combination with

our planting machine. The following pages (6-9) show our

carefully selected mixtures, and on request it is also possible

to create a special mixture according to the customer’s

wishes.

Please note that the mixtures, and the matching article

numbers, are not stated on the order form. Prices and

other relevant information can be obtained from your

representative on request.

Jacqueline van der Kloet has been a green designer for more

than 30 years, and during that period she has specialized

in the design of particular planting schemes, in which

fl owerbulbs play a major role.

All her planting schemes have a natural character and have

been qualifi ed several times as ‘confetti mixtures’ and ‘free

style mixtures’.

In Holland her designs can be seen at Keukenhof and

attraction park Efteling; abroad she joined projects in the

USA, China and Japan.

Mixtures, by Jacqueline van der Kloet

Mixtures and the planting machineNothing looks more happy in the Spring than a long ribbon

of fl owering bulbs. Everybody knows the impressive river of

grape hyacinths at Keukenhof, and the sheer endless strips

of daffodils that are mostly planted along approach road of

cities and villages.

But much more is possible…

First of all there is the planting machine, nowadays so

much advanced that there are other possibilities besides

the usual straight lines: waves and circles are some of the

extra options. In many situations this will give a much nicer

and more natural effect. Furthermore the machine offers

you easy possibilities to infl uence the end result: if a mass

planting effect is required you simply set the number of

bulbs per m2 a little higher. If the circumstances require a

more natural end result, simply lower the number of bulbs

per m2. You don’t even have to restrict yourself to one variety;

we have done lots of experiments with mixtures of various

kinds and the results are very promising.

12 www.tradewindsinternational.ca

Page 13: The Synthesis of Spring - Product Catalogue 2011

Mixtures and their compositionThe composition of a mixture depends on various factors that

are all linked to the spot where the planting of that mixture

will take place:

– Early, mid-season or late fl owering.

– Successive fl owering from early to late.

– Simple mixture of 2 or 3 varieties from the same group of

fl owerbulbs.

– Mixture of more than 3 varieties from different groups of

fl owerbulbs.

– Mass colour effect or subtle shades.

– Natural or cultivated.

– Single season or perennial fl owering.

Once the choice has been decided, and that could be a

combination of the factors as mentioned above, then the

following step is to bring together those varieties that will

form a balanced result; supporting each other optimal.

Colour, the shape of the fl ower and the appearance are of

great importance.

www.tradewindsinternational.ca 13

Page 14: The Synthesis of Spring - Product Catalogue 2011

The easiest mixture is one of different varieties out of the

same group, for example tulips or daffodils with similar or

successive fl owering time. These varieties have to match and

should, individually or together, provide the highest possible

end result:

– The fl ower shape should not be any problem because all

the varieties are from the same group. Colour can make

or break a combination; if the colours are too contrasting

the connection will disappear. It is therefore important to

look for colours that are from the same segment of the

colour circle: yellow, cream, orange or red for example or

lilac, purple and deep maroon.

– For the look it is also important to use a balanced

combination; botanical narcissi and split corona daffodils

go well together, as long as the percentage botanical

narcissi is much higher than that of the split coronas.

With a 50/50 percentage the split coronas will be too much

present and the balance will be completely lost. With 30%

split coronas and 70% botanical, the fi rst ones act as

solitaires backed by the second group.

More exciting and more surprising is a combination

of varieties from different groups of fl owerbulbs. This

combination offers plenty of opportunities for simultaneous

fl owering and an endless list of combinations for successive

fl owering. In the fi rst case a mass colour effect will be the

result, in the second case subtle shades and a prolonged

fl owering period are essential.

Mixtures, by Jacqueline van der Kloet

Simple, but effective combinations with simultaneous

fl owering are for example the combination of crocuses and

kaufmanniana tulips, or Anemone blanda and Muscari.

Those combinations however have a limited fl owering period

and in some cases it will therefore be important to look for a

succession of varieties that will guarantee a fl owering period

of 6 to 8 weeks with the highlight in the middle of Spring; the

second half of April.

– Take that period as starting point and look for a

combination of tulips and narcissi that will be at their best

at that moment, in combination with each other.

– Add some earlier and later fl owering varieties from the

same groups and complement this combination with

Chionodoxa or Scilla for the early period and Muscari or

multi fl owering hyacinths for later fl owering.

– Remember that the subtle varieties always need to be

present in higher percentages than the varieties with a

heavier look. By doing so the miniatures won’t get lost and

the balance will be maintained.

14 www.tradewindsinternational.ca

Page 15: The Synthesis of Spring - Product Catalogue 2011

In short:– mixtures are the future because as a mix the fl owerbulbs

can expose themselves in a very different, renewed

and surprising way. Apart from that most mixtures can

perfectly be planted in an easy way; with the planting

machine.

– However, it is impossible to give a standard answer to

the question how to compose a perfect mixture, as the

circumstances are never the same.

– To put a good mixture together, start by looking at the

situation and then decide about things like annual or

perennial fl owering, mass-effect or prolonged fl owering.

– By following the rules as mentioned above you can achieve

a balanced mixture. Another important aspect in this

matter that shouldn’t be forgotten: the more urban the

surroundings, the more opportunities for colours and

shapes. Large fl owering tulips and colours like orange,

red and purple perform well in a busy environment

with buildings and traffi c. At the outskirts and in the

countryside more tranquil colours should be used and

delicate, more natural varieties like crocuses, small

cupped and botanical narcissi and bluebells.

In case you really don’t know how to achieve a good result,

don’t hesitate to ask for advice in time; in consultation with

our customers various mixtures can be put together.

www.tradewindsinternational.ca 15

Page 16: The Synthesis of Spring - Product Catalogue 2011

Flowerbulbs in containers

When using fl owerbulbs in urban areas, a separate location can be

prepared for species suitable for use in interchangeable pots and

containers. These are being used more and more for beautifying

the image of residential areas or approach roads. Flowerbulbs can

play an important role in this, either as supplementary planting

in containers which are already planted with other plants, or

as eye catchers in interchangeable pots. In this case the inner

pot can be replaced at the end of the Spring by a pot holding

summer fl owering bulbs or plants. In all these cases, the use of

low-growing species with a long-lasting fl owering period will be

favored since these are less susceptible to the effects of wind.

Layered planting with bulbsUsing the right combination of varieties a nice colour effect

and a long fl owering period can be achieved. One way of

doing this is to plant the various species at different depths.

Tulips for instance are planted quite deep and small narcissi,

like Tete a Tete, less deep. The various fl owering phases will

succeed each other. It is even possible to add a third layer

of very early crocuses or dwarf iris. With this method it is

possible to create a fl owering period of many weeks, with the

use of one pot or container.

Some proven combinations are; tulipa Showwinner (red)

with Crocus Jeanne d’Arc (white), tulipa Stresa (yellow/red)

with Scilla siberica (blue), tulipa Red Riding Hood (red) with

Anemone blanda White Splendour and tulipa Flair with Scilla

siberica.

Moisture can be dangerousToo much moisture is disastrous, especially in the winter

period. Place the containers and pots on blocks for that

reason, so that the water that comes out of the holes can

fl ow away freely. Pit a layer of clay granules or potsherds

at the bottom of the container, fi ll it with a good potting

compost and plant the bulbs at the right distances. Then the

container is fi lled with the remainder of the compost up to

the top. In the case of layered planting, the compost is added

not once, but twice or even three times.

16 www.tradewindsinternational.ca

Page 17: The Synthesis of Spring - Product Catalogue 2011

Flowerbulbs in special places

CemeteriesThe general planting in cemeteries is usually quite sober. Large

formations of ground covering shrubs for low maintenance,

perennial plants, hedges, trees and turf are often the standard

ingredients. This type of planting suits itself as ideal background

for Spring fl owering bulbs.

In view of the nature of the cemetery the obvious choice are

fl owerbulbs that are not too fl ashy. This is not the place for happy

yellow and red tulips, but tulips in more appropriate colours are

certainly an option: white, lime green or brownish purple. Scilla,

Chionodoxa, Crocus, Leucojum and Narcissi are also suitable for

the ‘sober and stylish’ category. Besides it is also recommended

to choose fl owerbulbs that are suitable for perennial fl owering.

Golf coursesThinking of golf courses one doesn’t immediately visualize

fl owerbulbs. Short cut greens and endless grass areas come

to mind fi rst. However, fl owerbulbs can easily enhance the look

of the during Springtime bare golf courses. Flowerbulbs can

make those subtle differences along the approach roads, in

areas with trees and shrubbery and around restaurant terraces

etc.

Spring is not complete without fl owerbulbs, also around the

golf course. Along the approach roads the bulbs can easily

be planted with the planting machine (see pages 4-11). Our

specialists are pleased to offer their expertise and advice

to beautify your golf course. There are many options and

possibilities and we would like to think along with you.

RoundaboutsAll roundabouts have one thing in common; they are all

situated on prominent sites and therefore very suitable for a

striking planting scheme. Flowerbulbs, in combination with

perennial plants or low growing bushes, can create a year-

round colourful picture in various traffi c situations.

Nearly all types of fl owerbulbs can be used on roundabouts.

By choosing the right varieties you can create a perfect

combination of perennial and annual fl owering. On the larger

roundabouts or traffi c islands one could even consider the

possibility of mechanical planting.
