Mission
• To collect and synthesize the best practices for clinical swine medicine
• Translate and disseminate those practices to stakeholders who can apply them to improve swine health, ensure pork safety, maintain sustainability, and conserve resources
Goals
• SMEC
– To educate veterinary students from across the country, provide educational opportunities to swine production stakeholders, and to provide educational opportunities to the general public and media
• Curriculum
– To demonstrate live or digitally every clinical technique used in swine medical practice and clinical research trials and to provide students a place to practice those techniques

• SMEC 480: Swine Production Medicine Clinical Rotation – Practice sample collection & farm evaluation strategies – Visit 5 commercial farms and workup cases

– From ISU and 5 other veterinary schools

– Reached 11 different countries
– Had 17 veterinarians come through the center
Field Research
• SMEC can help evaluate products, production practices, or other techniques for your clients or production system
– Research overseen by SMEC faculty
– Findings evaluated in comparison with all other published data and resources available
– Final product includes summarized findings delivered in a written report
Search and Summary of Current Evidence
• SMEC has unique resources and expertise
– To conduct reviews of research literature and all other sources of information
– To answer specific clinical questions
– Information is compiled and evaluated for relevance and scientific soundness
– Findings are summarized and returned
Future Plans
• SMEC plans to build a new state of the art production facility
– Facilitate basic and advanced technical training to swine health professionals
– Allow demonstration and comparison of cutting edge production and health technologies
– Showcase swine production, health, and welfare to the media and public
Funding
• Estimated annual operating budget is around $500,000
• Primary funding to come from industry resources and fees for delivery of instructional modules
• Opportunity to give back to the profession and support the industry
