This paper describes how to quickly configure and deploy the Sun Storage 7110 Unified Storage appliance for Symantec Enterprise Vault and set up File System Activities.

Sun Storage 7110 ConfigurationFor this guide, the Sun Storage 7110, the “entry system” of the Sun Storage 7000 Unified Open Storage family, was used along with two Sun Fire x4140's running Symantec Enterprise Vault version 8.0.

The Sun Fire X4140 server is powered by up to 8 CPUs operating at 2.300 MHz and provides up to 12 SAS drives with a total capacity close to 2 TBytes in a 1U enclosure.

Setting up the environment to use the 7110 as a target for Enterprise Vault using the Graphical User Interface.

The GUI can be reached via the Network using the IP-Address of the SUN Storage 7110 https://IP-Address:215. For further details please see the documentation under: http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4167-10?l=enThe first step at all is that we have to login to the SUN Storage 7110.

Create a project

Define, or better said, create a project where we will “bundle” everything that will be necessary for our activities. After having logged in the 7110 we define a project. The definition of a project is done because within a project we can create and access snapshots of a share and also set some common access controls (“ACL´s”).

After having the project created we have to define the particular shares or Filesystems to be used later as the “Network Share” where the partitions will be created from Symantec Enterprise Vault during the creation of the Vault Storage Groups, Vault Stores and their Partitions.



Figure 4: Project without FilesystemsCreate a share Having a new project defined, there is still the need to define one or more shares that later will be accessed via the CIFS protocol.

Before defining the new shares for the project, we can set the default ownership for all new shares of the project that will be created in the future so that this property can be inherited for the future shares.This does not prevent the new shares from overriding these defaults when a new share within the project is defined.

Use a named userTo avoid the need to later enter login credentials every time when one of our shares or Filesystems will be accessed from the Symantec Enterprise Vault processes it is better to use the “named user” that is also defined as “logon user “ running all the Enterprise Vault processes.

Create a filesystemAfter having applied this setting, we define the first share to be used later from Enterprise Vault as the target vault store for our archived data.

In this example it is shown that single shares still can have another ownership than the default user (owner).

Add the 7110 system to a domain

To take full profit from the benefits and advantages of the usage of a “named user”, the SUN Storage 7110 Unified Open Storage must be part of the domain where the “named user” is defined within the Active Directory of the domain.

This is configured through the “services” part and there “Active Directory” of the administration GUI.

If the SUN Storage 7110 Unified Open Storage has joined the appropriate domain can be checked, or done, if not already happened, via administrating the “Active Directory” service.If the SUN Storage is running in another domain or still in the workgroup mode than it can be changed rapidly.

Modify CIFS propertiesLater the “CIFS properties” of the newly defined share still have to be adapted to the particular needs.

Unchecking the “Inherit from project” checkbox activates the “Resource Name” field and therefore enables entering the name that will be seen by the “Windows Computer Browser” and can later be used to promote the share and mount it using that name on a Windows host via “Map Network Drive..”.

The share has to be mounted to a server because it is a must that future Vault Store Partitions have to be created in empty subfolders and without having the share mounted, it is impossible to create the directory or folder structure.

This share can also be mounted to any other server, but it is more convenient to do this on the server running the Symantec Enterprise Vault 8.0 as the user that will be used to run the services and was previously defined as the owner of the share.

Install PrerequisitesAfter having performed all necessary prerequisite steps, Symantec Enterprise Vault 8.0 can be installed according the appropriate manual “Enterprise Vault 8.0 Installation and Configuration” that can be found either in the “Documentation folder” of the Enterprise Vault media or in the internet under the following link:http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/EVFSA_index.htm.

Deployment Scanner

Symantec provides on the installation media a tool that is very handy to check the prerequisites: The “Enterprise Vault Deployment Scanner”. This tool should be run before the “real” installation is started. With that tool is checked whether the necessary perquisites are satisfied or not.

During the installation the setup routine is doing a similar scan and the output should be checked carefully if problems are reported.

After a successful installation a reboot is needed before the next steps of the installation and configuration of Enterprise Vault 8.0, like running the different wizards etc., can be done.

Configuration of Symantec Enterprise Vault

The configuration after the initial installation of Enterprise Vault 8.0 is done by the “Configuration Wizard” that assists in an easy to understand way to configure the system before it can be used to archive any data.

During the run of the wizard, all needed information is prompted like the account information that should be used to run the services of Enterprise Vault 8.0. This account must be the same one that we used to be the owner of the share that was defined on the SUN Storage 7110 Unified Open Storage when the project and share(s) to be used as the target vaulting storage have been created.

After having all necessary data collected and the Vault Directory and Monitoring databases created, the configuration wizard terminates and Enterprise Vault 8.0 is ready for the definition of all the targets to archive the appropriate data and the creation of the vault store(s).

The “Getting Started Wizard” that will be launched automatically when the button “Finish” is clicked and no other “Radio Button” selected looks like the following and gives the choice between the usage of predefined defaults or to customize by your own.

When the wizard (that should run in “Custom” mode) is prompting for the properties of the partition of a new created Vault Store (earlier steps not shown here), the “Network Share” that was defined on the SUN Storage 7110 should be selected from the pull down menu.

In the next setup screen where the physical share or better said, storage, has to be defined, we are using a folder on the share that we defined at an earlier time.

This is the directory structure that was defined in an earlier step and now be used for the creation of a new Vault Store Partition. This folder has to be empty and therefore we take the subfolder “FSADir1”.

After hitting the “next” button, a connection test is started automatically to check how well the network connectivity works. The connectivity test here shows that the connectivity and the responses time are good.

Now all necessary steps are done and the vault store on the SUN Storage 7110 Unified Open Storage is configured and ready to be used.

Now all steps regarding the target storage activities are finished and the archiving targets have to be defined with appropriate policies and the related vault store targets. This can also be done via the “Getting Started Wizard” or the Enterprise Vault Management Console.

All these steps and screenshots show just a sample and will vary from customer to customer, depending on local policies, naming conventions and, last but not least, the objects that are to be archived.



Summary

This guide is a quick introduction on how to configure the Sun Storage 7110 to be used as a Vault Store target to be used from Symantec Enterprise Vault 8.0. The part about the setup and configuration of the SUN Storage 7110 works also for Symantec Enterprise Vault 2007.

Due to the fact that the complete SUN Storage 7x10 series is providing the same web based Graphical User Interface, this brief guide covers the complete series.
