As myself and the other half Laura were being dropped off for a two- night stay at the Dunstane Hotel in the capital, our taxi driver asked: “Are you booked into the restaurant, The Skerries? The food’s amazing. One of the best in the city.” On this occasion, I’m delighted to report this Edinburgh cabbie most definitely wasn’t wrong. The food at the Dunstane is top-notch. Now going by the hotel restaurant’s name, The Skerries, and a quick gander at the menu, it’s clear there’s more than a slight nod to Orkney. Pictures on the wall also hint at an affection for the isles — and some of the staff even sounded Orcadian. If the Dunstane’s brief was to com- bine island charm with capital city chic, they’ve pretty much nailed it. The dining room has a quiet, relaxed feel but still has flashes of uber-trendy elegance. And it was here we settled down for a fabulous meal. I kicked off with a starter of West Lothian haggis croquettes and pick- led turnips. And, hats off to head chef Paul Hood, right. It takes a lot to make the humble neep a delicacy but, boy, did he pull it off. I could have eaten a plate of these sweet, nippy morsels all on their own. Laura was delighted with her Ork- ney scallops and then as impressed as I was with the pickled veg when she tucked into her main of sea bass which was accompanied with celery that had been given the same va-va-voom as my turnip. For main, I had the Orkney sirloin steak. Cooked to perfection. Dessert was also a showstopper. Laura is quite the baker and makes the best cheesecake I’ve ever tasted. And the Skerries version is as close as anyone has come to knocking her off the No1 perch in my eyes. Close, but no cigar (I might be biased so sorry, Paul). Laura, meanwhile, had the dark chocolate orange and praline tart. Imagine the most luxurious Terry’s Chocolate Orange ever — and you’re still not even close to how good this dish tastes. But the food isn’t the only thing the Dunstane has going for it. It’s a classy boutique hotel with a selection of bespoke rooms, ideally placed in Edinburgh’s Wester Coates just outwith the city-centre hus- tle and bustle but close enough to wander into town. It’s also not far from Haymarket train station and the tram stop while there’s a bus stop just outside the hotel’s entrance. So whether you’re in Edinburgh for some sight-seeing, a show or a night on the razzle, its location is a massive plus. And finally, a few words on the Dunstane’s impressive staff. They’re always polite and helpful — and they should really be billing the tourist board for the effort they put in selling Edinburgh’s attractions to domestic and foreign visitors alike. They’re a credit to the hotel and their city. The best customer service I’ve ever experienced was at 5H celeb retreat Mar Hall in Renfrewshire. But the staff at the Dunstane could give them a run for their money. I’d challenge them all to have a fight for the crown but they’re all so nice they’d probably agree to settle it on a coin toss. The Dunstane describes itself on its website as Edinburgh’s best-kept secret. At this rate, it won’t remain secret for long...
