Editor's choice

As we get ready to sit down to Thanksgiving dinner this week to celebrate our country’s settling, National Geographic Channel presents a tale about the Pilgrims that most of us never learned in school.

“Saints & Strangers,” a two-part, four-hour movie airing Sunday and Monday, Nov. 22 and 23, tells the largely untold story of the two factions of English that crossed the Atlantic to what is now Plymouth, Mass., in 1620. Of those who made the brutal 66-day journey aboard the Mayflower, there are the “Saints,” religious separatists who risked their lives for a singular cause – religious freedom. Then there were the “Strangers,” a mix of economic opportunists and seekers of adventure. Their clashing values often created complex internal struggles as they sought to establish a colony in America.

Further complicating things was the presence of the local Native American tribes, not all of whom agreed that the newcomers were their friends.

Heading the large cast is Vincent Kartheiser (“Mad Men”) as William Bradford, the colony’s moral compass; Ron Livingston (“Sex and the City”) as John Carver, its first governor; Ray Stevenson (“Divergent”) as Stephen Hopkins, leader of the Strangers; and Natascha McElhone (“Californication”) as Elizabeth Hopkins, his wife. Also starring are Anna Camp (“Pitch Perfect”), Brian F. O’Byrne (“Aquarius”), Michael Jibson (“Hatfields & McCoys”) and Raoul Trujillo (“Apocalypto”).

“You know, that’s really not part of the story that I grew up with, certainly,” Livingston notes. “And I think in general a lot of the tensions and just the sort of day-to-day stuff of what happened in the settlement kind of got papered over and sort of glossed over into like a third-grade pageant version of Thanksgiving. But it’s really fascinating, I think, to go back and see not only just how daring it was for these people to try to bite this off. You know, it’s almost like colonizing another planet – and deciding that you’re going to stay.”

It’s easy to understand the feelings of the Pilgrims as they sailed off on the Mayflower. Imagine setting off into the unknown in a vessel not built for passengers, with a very real chance of becoming very ill or dying before reaching your destination – if you get there at all.

But faith, as is the case with the Saints, can be a powerful force.

“I think for these guys, their faith was essential,” Kartheiser says. “I think the Strangers side of the adventurers were people who never wanted to know what was around the next bush and almost needed that sort of adrenaline. You know, they had been in the wars or they had been mutineers or criminals. So for half of them, it was this adventurous spirit. And the other half just believed so deeply that whatever was around that next bend, it was preordained by the Lord. So with both, there was this kind of compulsion to go.”

AIDANQUINN

You were once a roofer. Is that a skill you still use?Well, I still, much to my wife’s (actress Elizabeth Bracco) dismay, get on the ladder and go up to the third floor and on the roof and tinker around and empty the gutters and all that. She thinks I’m insane, that I should hire someone to do it but it’s kind of like, no, I like doing it. So yeah, I still tinker around with it.

You received an Emmy nomination early in your acting career for the 1985 drama “An Early Frost.” What did that do for your career?I don’t know if I saw any real change in my career. It was certainly a lot of respect for that piece of work, that film. But would I say it catapulted me? No. Did it really help me that much? I don’t know. It didn’t seem to. Maybe a little bit, you know?

Did it lead to more work?Well, I don’t know if it was that project that led to other work. I’ve always been pretty steadily working since I was 22, so for the last 34 years I’ve worked pretty steadily. ... I don’t remember a director saying, “I saw you in that and I had to have you.”

What is your favorite role?Probably “This Is My Father,” the film that my younger brother (the late Paul Quinn) wrote and directed, my older brother (Declan Quinn) was the cinematographer and we all helped produce, with James Caan and Brendan Gleeson and Stephen Rea, all these incredible Irish actors, and John Cusack has a small part in it.

How is it for you, 21 years after the original release of “The Lion King,” to be voicing the character Pumbaa again in “The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar” – both the introductory movie and the subsequent series?Well, to be Uncle Pumbaa now is fantastic! This is a whole new chapter, and I hope it continues. I mean, to be with Simba’s kids now, it’s just amazing.

Is it comforting to you that James Earl Jones also returns from the original film in the “Lion Guard” movie? It is. I saw Mr. Jones in a Broadway show, “You Can’t Take It With You,” and I went backstage and he said (emulating Jones’ deep voice): “We are doing ‘The Lion Guard!’ ” He was so thrilled about it.

After two decades, how well do you feel you know Pumbaa now?Sometimes, they’ll have me say something where I think maybe I should say it a little differently. And they’ll go, “Hey, you’re Pumbaa. Say it that way.”

At the beginning, did you have any notion that the “Lion King” franchise would turn out to be what it’s become?Oh, of course not. Nathan Lane (the original voice of Timon) and I were doing “Guys and Dolls” on Broadway in 1992, and we went to an audition for (the voices of) the hyenas. Two months later, he said, “Have you heard anything?” I said, “No” ... and that night, my agent called and said, “OK, you’re playing Pumbaa, and Nathan is Timon.”The next day, we were in the elevator of one of those great old New York buildings, going up to the floor where (“Lion King” composers) Tim Rice and Elton John and all these people were. The elevator opened up, and there they were, right in front of us. And as we were walking slowly toward them, we didn’t utter a sound, scared that we would lose the jobs because we couldn’t remember what we’d sounded like (at the audition). I just said something and they laughed, and I thought, “OK. I’m on the right track.”

How was it to work in the film with your father, “B.J. and the Bear” veteran Greg Evigan? Suddenly, you’re in that position and you think, “This is so much fun!” I just feel so lucky to have gotten to work with him. We worked together when I was about 9 years old, on a Roger Corman film (“House of the Damned”), and being able to do it now as an adult was so great. It was so nice to get to hang out and have dinners. We’re really good friends, so it was just a bonus to get to have some on-camera time together.

BRIANA EVIGANOF ‘ONCE UPON A HOLIDAY’ WEDNESDAY ON HALLMARK CHANNEL

Do you think of “Once Upon a Holiday” as your “Roman Holiday,” since like Audrey Hepburn in that movie, you play a princess who escapes her royal trappings to experience life as a commoner? Yeah, it could be considered that. I never thought of that! I have a bit of an edge or a toughness, so it’s nice to play roles that have that underneath – but it’s even more fun to get into characters that are farther away from me, like this one. Obviously, you still bring pieces of yourself into it, which I think I was able to do here. This girl doesn’t know anything outside of royalty, though. She’s never seen a pay phone or a credit card before ... or even a hot dog, just the normal, typical things.

Do you enjoy having distinct careers in holiday fare such as this, plus horror tales and the “Step Up” dance-movie franchise? I feel very blessed. It’s so cool to jump around and do all different types of projects; it’s kind of my favorite thing. You get to become a different person every couple of months, and I love each genre for its own reasons. They’re all so fun.

FOODF

GEORGE DICKIE’S WHAT'S FOR DINNER

When was your last vacation, where and why?“... My last trip has been to Cartagena in Colombia. I went there to speak for a conference for Latin America wedding professionals and it was just fascinating, so I got there a little early and I stayed a few days extra to absorb the local flavors. The food was amazing. ...”

What book are you currently reading?“It’s called ‘10 Percent Happier’ by Dan Harris. ... He’s a newscaster, I think, with ABC. ... And he had a meltdown on the air while he was anchoring a show and consequently he learned to meditate. And so the book is fascinating. ...”

What did you have for dinner last night?“I’m staying at the Anders Hotel in West Hollywood while I film in L.A. and I had a lovely dinner. I actually asked them to make me an omelet because I’m here for a long time. ... So I asked them to make me an omelet with olive oil, no cheese and no butter because I’m attempting to adapt to the Mediterranean Diet. And they made me a big casserole of market vegetables. ... And it was a delicious meal.”

What is your next project?“The interesting thing about where I work is it’s a little bit like fashion. ... We are really getting ready for the spring season, which means I’m coming up with a lot of new designs, so we make mock-ups to show clients. So these are display cakes and lots of sketches ... . And then of course, the Food Network has all these different ideas, so we are on the drawing board with new ideas for shows ... .”

Baking meets light construction this week as Food Network and HGTV team up to present a unique holiday special.

“All-Star Gingerbread Build,” airing Saturday, Nov. 28 on both networks, pairs pastry chefs Duff Goldman (“Ace of Cakes”) and Ron Ben-Israel (“Sweet Genius”) with “Property Brothers” Jonathan and Drew Scott in a one-off competition to see which tandem can create the best life-size gingerbread house.

“I don’t know if it’s the first time the networks cooperated,” says Ben-Israel, who was partnered with Jonathan Scott, “but it’s definitely not a regular occurrence, and it was a chance to get together and enjoy it and learn and be challenged.”

In the hourlong special, plans are drawn up and then wooden skeletons are built. To these are attached bricks made of gingerbread for the exterior walls and tiles made from the pastry for the roof shingles. A mortar made from royal icing bonds everything together and then a studio audience judges the final products.

A good time, according to Ben-Israel, was had by all.

“Duff and I are friends,” he says, “but we live on different coasts and we don’t always have a chance to get together. ... You know, we always said we wanted to work together more, so even though we were competing against each other, we actually had a good time. You know, how can you not be happy when you do gingerbread houses for the holidays?”

And learn something new in the process, as the bakers picked up carpentry tips and the Scotts got to use baking implements in construction.

“There were no losers,” Ben-Israel says. “Everybody did well. I mean, this was for charity, so it wasn’t really about Duff and me and the twins competing against each other. It’s let’s have fun and put it all together for the community’s joy. It wasn’t about ego.”

The worlds of producer Dick Wolf’s “Law & Order” and “Chicago” franchises have crossed over several times, but S. Epatha Merkerson isn’t worried about being a different character in each.

The Emmy-winning actress had a guest role on the parent “Law & Order” before returning for her long run on it as Lt. Anita Van Buren, so – even though “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” aligns with “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago PD” on occasion – she’s not overly concerned about making a new place for herself in Wolf’s universe as hospital administrator Sharon Goodwin on “Chicago Med,” his latest NBC drama series, which has just started its Tuesday run.

“I think it will be cool to see what happens when Benson (‘L&O: SVU’s’ Mariska Hargitay) runs into Goodwin.” Merkerson muses of that inevitable meeting, adding that she expects the quality of her “Chicago Med” run to be “similar to the 17 years I spent on ‘Law & Order.’ No actor will stay that long unless something is happening that’s allowing them to feel good about the work that they’re doing, and good about the people that they’re working with.

“It’s another group of writers, an entirely new group of producers,” Merkerson allows, “but the cog in this wheel for me is Dick Wolf. I actually did an episode in the very first season of ‘Law & Order,’ so I’ve been working with Dick the longest. What I’ve learned about this man is that he is also protective – I’m speaking only of myself, but I know that about all the actors – he’s very protective of us and he wants what’s good for us. That I’m doing this show, and working with this company again, has all to do with the people that he surrounds himself with.”

Admitting she’s been “spoiled” in being able to work in or near her New York home base “and stay in my own apartment,” Merkerson embraces spending much time in the Windy City for the new show’s on-location filming. She also anticipates “Chicago Med” holding to her belief that “television, at its best, is a teaching tool as well. And at the end of the day, if you leave that hour and you’ve picked up something and you’ve enjoyed what you’ve watched, that’s a hell of a show.” Click or tap on icon for more!

A riff on the Southern holiday staple, candied yams, these sweet potatoes are inspired by both tostones and my Grandma’s sweet comforting version of the classic.

1 1/2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled

2/3 cup vegetable oil

1 teaspoon salt

Maple Bacon Candy8 ounces thick cut smoked bacon, cut into 1 inch pieces

2 tablespoons thinly sliced ginger

1 teaspoon Chinese 5 spice

1 cup maple syrup

2 tablespoons lemon juice

For the yams: Bring a 4-6 quart pot of water up to a boil. While that’s working, slice the sweet potatoes into 1-inch thick rings. Drop the potato discs into the boiling water and cover. Boil for a good 8 minutes. Remove one of the smaller rings and see if the center is at all tender. You do not want these potatoes to be cooked all the way through. Rather you are looking for firm potatoes with a little give. There is a short window you’re trying to isolate. At 8 minutes, the smallest potatoes should be done. At 10, they should all be done.

Transfer the potato discs to a baking sheet and line them up in a single layer. Once they are cool enough to handle, press them between two sheets of parchment paper or foil. If they are overcooked, the discs will break apart. If they are in that perfect window, they will give slightly and smoosh out around the edges. You are looking for something that is only slightly thinner than what you started with, maybe 2/3 of an inch after

smooshing. Refrigerate the discs till you’re ready to fry them. Cold discs will hold up better when dropped into the oil.

• Make the syrup: In a 10-inch saute pan or skillet, fry off the bacon till almost crispy. Set it aside and pour off (and save) all but 2 tablespoons

of bacon fat. Add the ginger to the fat and let it sizzle for about 30 seconds. Add the 5 spice and toast till it becomes quite fragrant, about 15 seconds. Stir in the maple syrup and bring it up to a boil. Let the syrup cook down for about 8 minutes. It should reduce by 1/3 and thicken

slightly. Stir in the bacon and the lemon juice. Bring it back to a simmer just before serving.

• Fry the yams: In a 12 inch, heavy bottomed skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Pinch off a tiny bit of sweet potatoes and drop it in the oil. If it starts sizzling immediately, go ahead and gently place the discs in the oil. Do not crowd them and make sure they are in a single layer. Fry until the cracks and crevices on the bottom are caramelized crispy brown, about 6 minutes. Gently flip the potatoes over and do the same on the other side.

When both sides are browned, drain the discs on paper towels and season both sides with salt. To serve, stack the yams on top of one another and spoon the bacon syrup over top. Serve like hotcakes.

SSTORY

Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie typically know how they’ll spend the first half of Thanksgiving, and the plan is the same this year.

After they wrap up their NBC duties on that morning’s “Today” show, the co-anchors will head to their perch along the Macy’s Parade route as the network gives the 89th annual edition of New York’s holiday-season-launching event its traditional broadcast. Al Roker will join his “Today” colleagues from points on the parade’s path, showcasing character balloons, marching bands, themed floats and celebrity guests while Lauer and Guthrie are in a perfect spot to introduce musical numbers from current Broadway shows.

“This is probably my 12th year or something like that,” Lauer says, “but it’s amazing how you still get pumped up for it ... especially when you step onto that street on Thanksgiving morning and you see the crowd in the stands and the bands lining up and the Broadway casts rehearsing. Even though you think to yourself, ‘It would be fun to be home with my family on Thanksgiving morning,’ you suddenly forget about that completely, and you just can’t wait for this spectacle of Americana.”

Guthrie is newer to the parade, this being her fourth hosting stint, and she deems that role “really fun. I think there’s just a certain energy around Thanksgiving, and with everybody out there, there’s so much excitement in the air. I actually always get a big kick out of how excited Matt gets about the parade; that’s really part of the fun for me, but it’s just one of those great traditions, and to get to be a part of it is so special.”

Among those slated for this year’s lineup: music stars Mariah Carey, Jennifer Nettles, Jordin Sparks, Rachel Platten (“Fight Song”), Andy Grammer, Daughtry and Pat Benatar; Cirque du Soleil; the reigning Miss America, Betty Cantrell; chef and Food Network personality Sandra Lee; hockey’s Mark and Marty Howe; and the Muppets, sharing their spot with musician Questlove. Represented stage shows will include “Finding Neverland,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “The King and I.”

Lauer sometimes has his children with him at the parade, and this is the second Thanksgiving for Guthrie’s daughter Vale. “I’m still thinking about whether to bring her this year,” her mom admits. “Honestly, it will have to do with how cold it is, but I would love for her to see it. She’s little, but I think she would be completely blown away by all the colors and sounds and sights. I really look forward to having her be there year after year.”

Weather surely is a major consideration for the Macy’s Parade, and Lauer has experienced just about every kind. “We have done the parade in light V-neck sweaters, then we’ve done it in years when it has been raining torrentially or snowing sideways. When you think about some of the outfits those marching-band members or majorettes or cheerleaders are wearing, and they’re out there marching for something like three miles and they get to Herald Square – and they still have smiles on their faces, because now they know they’re in front of the cameras – and they can’t feel their fingers or toes, it’s really incredible.”

Also slated to be with Guthrie and Roker for the tree lighting on NBC’s “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” special Dec. 2, Lauer adds that he and his parade-telecast comrades still get to have their own Thanksgivings once Santa Claus has made his parade-ending appearance and the crowd disperses. “Savannah often goes to be with her in-laws in New Jersey,” he notes, “and I head out to be with my family on Long Island. As soon as 12:15 (p.m. ET) arrives, it’s a traditional holiday for us.”

And for Guthrie, there’s an added upside to having that day’s on-air chores: “You know what’s great about it? It gets me out of any cooking duties.”

Napoleon Bonaparte once said, “History is a myth that men agree to believe.” Truer words were never spoken when it comes to Thanksgiving.

The two-hour “American Experience” documentary “The Pilgrims,” Tuesday, Nov. 24, on PBS (check local listings), endeavors to explode a few myths about the holiday and give viewers a real history of what happened.

“They’re ripe to be exploded because of the way historical memory has worked about Thanksgiving,” says Ric Burns (“Andy Warhol: A Documentary”), who wrote and directed the film. “I mean, it’s funny. It’s kind of a funny little cartoon balloon we carry around in our heads. And unlike other moments in American history – the Revolution, the Civil War, about which we might know something – what we know is very kind of self-contained within that cartoon bubble. You know, buckled shoes. You know all the items the way I do, we can all recite them.”

As is the case with many legends, the real story of Thanksgiving is far more interesting, starting with the fact that the Pilgrims weren’t the first Europeans to put down roots on American soil. That distinction went to the settlers of Jamestown, Va., 13 years earlier in 1607.

The film details the Pilgrims’ ordeal after landing at what is now Provincetown, Mass., in November 1620. They faced rampant disease, starvation and death at the Plymouth colony, and to ward off attacks by the natives they would

prop up their sick and dead against trees so they would appear to be sentries.

The Pilgrims’ relationship with the local tribes was complex. They built Plymouth Plantation on a site littered with the remains of the Wampanoags, who had been decimated years earlier by a plague brought over by European fishermen. Vulnerable to attacks by other tribes, the two groups formed an uneasy alliance. After surviving the brutal winter of 1620-21, they found their crops had yielded a considerable harvest and the following fall held a three-day celebration of games and food. But it wasn’t until more than 200 years later that President Abraham Lincoln, with the country in the midst of a divisive war, commemorated that feast as what is now Thanksgiving.

“It’s a product of 19th century America fighting a war about how to define what America is, the product of the Civil War,” Burns says. “It’s a product of the unlikely survival and return of this manuscript. I mean, no manuscript of Plymouth Plantation, no Thanksgiving.”

That manuscript was written between 1630 and 1651 by William Bradford, the colony’s governor, and it forms the backbone of the documentary. Here, the late Roger Rees (“Cheers”) makes his final film appearance in the role of Bradford.

“I really feel anybody who sees this film is going to go, ‘That’s what William Bradford looks like,’ “ Burns says. “Roger just got it. He just got it immediately. He could make the word ‘etcetera’ put a lump in your throat. And I can’t imagine anybody having done it better.”

DUAL Oscar winnerHilary Swank remains one of dogs’ best friends

This Thanksgiving night will be like last Thanksgiving night for Hilary Swank, and she’s happy to have it that way.

The two-time Oscar winner (for “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Million Dollar Baby”) also is well-known as a longtime advocate for animals, and she points out that she’s often photographed with her own rescue dogs. Her pleasure is self-evident, then, about producing – with a fellow returnee, award-show veteran Michael Levitt – the second annual, celebrity-filled “All-Star Dog Rescue Celebration” Thursday, Nov. 26, on Fox.

“You never really know,” the friendly Swank says of staging the event again. “With any type of journey in the creative world, there are a lot of cooks in the kitchen and a lot of people who need to say, ‘Yes.’ I think Fox was thrilled with last year’s success; at one point, we had something like 5.5 million viewers, which is a good number for a show that’s been around and proven, much less a first-time show.

“It feels good as a producer to have any show that you’re affiliated with be a success,” adds Swank, “but more importantly, this show, which obviously has such a special place in my heart. It goes to show that all the viewers who tuned in have a special place in their hearts as well for these animals, dogs specifically, who don’t have a home. That, to me, is the most beautiful thing ... that everyone wants to work together to put an end to that. Pun intended, I’m thankful for that!”

Again this year, the special will offer information for viewers on adopting rescue dogs in their own localities. “We were able to get the statistics out,” Swank reflects. “I think most people don’t know that there are 8 million animals across the United States that don’t have homes, and 4 million of those don’t make it out. Just making people aware of that is important, but so is dispelling some of the myths surrounding dogs who have bad raps. They’ve been bred to do certain things, but that’s not necessarily their nature.”

The previous edition of the show enables the new one to update some of the dog-adoption stories presented last year. That helps Swank – soon to do her first television series in almost 20 years, the Starz drama “The One Percent” – in her mission to make the two-hour “Dog Rescue Celebration” a “joyful event, showing the joy these dogs bring to our lives, and how they touch our hearts in ways that some people can’t. We’re hopeful to achieve the same type of feeling this year.”

If ever a series came by its name accurately, “Unforgettable” surely is one of them, in multiple ways.

The mystery’s star, Poppy Montgomery, has every right to call it “the show that won’t die.” After CBS canceled it following its first season, the network reversed itself and ordered two more rounds. When it appeared to be done after that, A&E Network stepped up and revived it for a Season 4 that begins with two episodes Friday, Nov. 27. Montgomery – now an executive producer of the show as well – has high hopes for her latest return as Carrie Wells, the New York police detective who puts her heightened sense of recall to work on cases.

“Unforgettable” newcomers can get on board quickly, thanks to a clever newspaper-story device that references the Season 3 finale “without drawing it out in an incredibly long-winded way,” Montgomery says. “It’s also a very iconic New York scene, walking along the water.” And returning viewers, along with Carrie’s partner and ex-beau Al Burns (Dylan Walsh), have to deal with something new: the husband no one knew she had, played by Skeet Ulrich.

In moving from broadcast television to basic cable, Montgomery notes the loosened boundaries, particularly with language: “I feel like a seven-year-old with this freedom ... but it’s become such an international market, we also have a huge fan base there that we don’t want to alienate. That’s important, but we do get to have a little wink with it. I’ve never been able to swear on television, so I was like a kid in a candy store.”

New to the cast are Kathy Najimy as the detectives’ boss and Alani “La La” Anthony (“Power”) and E.J. Bonilla (“Revenge”) as their colleagues. “Without a Trace” alum Montgomery, who has given birth to two children over the course of “Unforgettable,“ was in a rare position when the possibility of a fourth season arose.

“When they came to me and said, ‘We may go to A&E,’ I was no longer under contract – so I had the ability at that point to decide if I wanted to continue with it. A&E was an exciting prospect, being cable, and they do crime dramas so well. And the idea that the show would come back twice after being canceled? I had to see if it could actually happen.

“Listen, I’ve been on television for 20 years, and I’m baffled by this show,” Montgomery muses. “Its (endurance is) owed to the fans and also to our international audience, and A&E taking a chance on us is great. And I’m happy to be on cable. It’s a different world. There’s a lot more freedom to explore, yet we get to maintain the integrity of the show. It’s kind of a great marriage.”

A producer of the past two seasons of “Unforgettable,” Montgomery is glad to be an executive producer now, a title she also had on the Neve Campbell-starring 2013 Lifetime movie “An Amish Murder.”

“I’m interested in that piece of it, the actual running and development of a show, how it takes form,” maintains Montgomery. “And it’s really not a vanity title for me. I’m extremely involved in the show, in every way.”

When he’s on the field, Sean Lee is one of the best linebackers in the NFL. Thus far in his career, however, his biggest opponent has been injuries. Assuming he’s healthy, the Dallas Cowboys’ leading tackler hopes to disrupt the juggernaut offense of Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers who visit Dallas on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26, on CBS.

Dallas traditionally hosts the late afternoon Thanksgiving Day game, so the Detroit Lions will welcome former Cowboy DeMarco Murray and the Philadelphia Eagles to town in the earlier holiday matchup on CBS. The Chicago Bears also visit the Green Bay Packers on NBC later in the evening.

Lee has been a menace to opposing offenses since he joined the Cowboys in 2010. The only linebacker credited with intercepting passes by both Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, he’s been having a solid season up to this point. His most stellar performance by far was the Cowboys’ Week 2 victory over the Eagles where Lee had 14 tackles and an interception; almost single-handedly stifling Murray, his former teammate, who gained only two yards on the ground.

Lee’s injuries date back to his college days at Penn State and have carried through to his professional career. He missed the entire 2014 season with a torn ACL. Returning this year, he leads an improved defense that is still trying to find its way in a season marred by a plethora of team injuries; including those to offensive stars Tony Romo and Dez Bryant. With those players expected to return, a healthy Lee and the Cowboys still have playoff hopes.

The story of Apple Computer icon Steve Jobs has been told several times, but in the hands of two Oscar winners – “Slumdog Millionaire” director Danny Boyle and “Social Network” screenwriter Aaron Sorkin – it’s bound to be something different. And the movie titled “Steve Jobs” certainly is.

Sorkin cleverly structures it like a three-act play, focusing on specific milestones in the late Jobs’ career, including the debuts of the Macintosh computer and the iMac – but you need the right performer in the title role to make it all work. Michael Fassbender proves to be that, playing Jobs as reserved and demanding, always keeping those around him guessing.

And what a supporting cast to do the guessing: Seth Rogen does some of his best work yet as Jobs colleague Steve Wozniak, with Kate Winslet, Jeff Daniels and Katherine Waterston (Sam’s daughter) as others who factor into Jobs’ life and work.

Fassbender has logged his share of screen time (“Shame,” “The Counselor,” the “X-Men” franchise), but he’s still not so well-known that he can’t lose himself completely in the part of Jobs. That’s where he succeeds while others such as Ashton Kutcher and Noah Wyle couldn’t; their images are so famous, it

worked against their completely being able to personify the enigma Jobs was.

That helps Fassbender with not worrying about image as he portrays some of Jobs’ more unflattering traits, such as paranoia over whom to trust, and over letting any of his power be delegated to others. He had such a vision for Apple, that focus cost him many relationships, including some of those that helped get him where he got (see: Wozniak).

The Sorkin script, inspired largely by a Walter Isaacson book, leaves out the earliest and latest parts of Jobs’ life, but the essence is still there ... and that’s what counts in a movie of this nature. Even without sequences detailing his childhood and well-before-his time of death, you’ll leave the theater knowing who Jobs was. And you might even reach into your pocket for, or go home to, one of his innovations right afterward.

“Steve Jobs” is a movie about brilliant people, and anyone who knows Sorkin’s writing can guess what a match he is for it. A lot of the excitement is in the words. The picture insists you keep listening – but you will anyway, if you’re on board at all with this story. “Steve Jobs” really gets its job done.
