THE STORY OF m/y CHRISTINA O
Christina’s beginnings were inauspicious as a World War II surplus Canadian frigate. Purchased
by Aristotle Onassis in 1954 for $34,000, he gutted and converted her into one of the most
luxurious private yachts at a cost of $4 million (equivalent to $45 million today).
1958
For nine tumultuous years, one of the most passionate, chronicled and ill-fated romances was played out aboard Christina between Aristotle Onassis and opera diva Maria Callas. Her skills as a singer and actress so completely transformed her art that her admirers now speak of all opera as Before Callas and After Callas.
They cruised to exotic locations in Europe, often in the company of celebrities such as Greta Garbo, Bette Davis and Margot Fonteyn.
1968
The Maria Callas era ended abruptly in 1968, when Aristotle Onassis courted Jacqueline Kennedy. He then married the former first lady on board Christina, at his private island of Scorpios.
Christina entertained a new generation: the Kennedy children, as well as US and European dignitaries on both sides of the Atlantic.
1973
Onassis was devastated after the tragic death of his only son Alexander, who died while flying his small private airplane which crashed shortly after take-off from Athens, Greece.
1975
The life of Aristotle Socrates Onassis came to a close in 1975, ending an unparalleled chronicle of history aboard the Christina that defined three decades of the very essence of the international society.
Onassis willed his treasured yacht to his daughter Christina, who in turn bestowed it to the Greek government as a presidential yacht.
2001
A meticulous restoration program involving research, engineering and craftsmanship, began. Experts in yacht refurbishment have passionately restored the spacious yacht to provide today’s guests with the same experience enjoyed by celebrated guests of decades past.
Welcome to a new beginning – the yacht that wrote history sails once again into a new millennium as Christina O.
Michelin Star CuisineO N B O A R D m / y C H R I S T I N A O
Once again in history, the Christina O has attracted
the great and famous. However, this time it is not as a
guest of Ari or Jacqueline, it is as an integral part of its
experience.
The Yacht can proudly claim another unique feature –
that of exceptional dining on board. One of the greatest
restaurants in the world, Don Alfonso 1890, is now
managing the galley on board the Christina O.
Alfonso Iaccarino was given the title of Italian Chef of the
Year in 1999 and his restaurant, Don Alfonso 1890, was
awarded its third Michelin Star in 1997. Alfonso Iaccarino
is recognised worldwide as an ambassador to the world
for new southern Italian cuisine. His meticulous attention
to ingredients has led him to unstintingly promote the
best that Italy (and Southern Europe) has to offer.
The restaurant, Don Alfonso 1890, is suspended
between the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno
and has become a living legend. The passion of three
generations of the Iaccarino family has made the cuisine
one of elegance and clarity. Now guests on board the
Christina O enjoy this wonderful cuisine. The focus is on
the highest quality of ingredients prepared in the special
“Don Alfonso” style.
The aim is to achieve a balance of tastes and to serve
healthy, exciting food. The style appears simple but a
clever balance of taste makes it memorable. Most guests
at Don Alfonso’s Restaurant only have the opportunity
to visit once. On board the Christina O, each meal is a
new experience.
At the restaurant, Don Alfonso, the wine cellars are
legendary. Stored in caves below the earth, this wine is
kept in perfect conditions for years. These wines can also
be experienced on board the Christina O, to compliment
the dishes.
For special occasions, Alfonso Iaccarino himself can be
booked to cook personally for you. Bringing with him,
his own grown vegetables and wines from his cellars, it
is an experience of a lifetime, to have one of the greatest
legends prepare a gastronomic feast on-board the most
famous Yacht in the world.

O nassis saw Christina as a powerful symbol of his business empire
and he created a sumptuous, elegant yacht where he could
entertain. Christina personified unabashed elegance and luxury
- in the words of Egypt’s King Farouk, she was “the last word in
opulence”.

Nowhere on board is this sense of history so apparent as in
Ari’s Bar. The famous bar stools are still there, as well as the bar
handles made of whale fangs, engraved with scenes from the
Odyssey. The entire bar is original.
F or decades, the eyes of the world were transfixed on the lavish
parties and private intrigues of Aristotle Onassis. Luminaries,
from heads of state to international socialites and Hollywood
stars, sipped champagne and dined on board.
