The story of Mary Queen of Scots unfolds with all the drama

of a Greek tragedy. Her childhood and youth were happily spent

in the French court, where she was favoured for her beauty,

grace and close links with the English throne. Elizabeth deliberated

for 18 years before signing the death warrant for the woman

whom some saw as the rightful queen of England. Mary’s great

consolation was that she died a martyr’s death “I offered willingly to

shed my blood in the quarrel of the church”. The Spanish

Armada was sent by King Philip of Spain as a direct result of the

death of Mary and her claims to the English throne.
