THE STORY OF RORO JONGGRANG
Once upon a time, there was a king named Bondowoso. He was famous for his
powerful weapon called Bandung. Therefore Bondowoso was called Bandung Bondowoso.
Bandung Bondowoso fell in love with a beautiful princess, Roro Jonggrang. He wanted to
marry her. Roro Jonggrang was afraid to refuse his proposal because Bandung Bondowoso
would destroy her kingdom if she refused.
To make things difficult for Bandung Bondowoso to marry her, Roro Jonggrang gave
some reuirements, she asked him to build her one thousand temples within one night,
Bandung Bondowoso had to finish them before sunrise. !ithout doubt of his success, he
accepted the reuirements.
!ith the help of genies and spirits, Bandung Bondowoso and his allies built the
temples. "t four o#clock in the morning, Bandung Bondowoso had only five more temples to
build. Roro Jonggrang panicked because she knew he would complete the task.
$uddenly, Roro Jonggrang had an idea. $he called all the women in the kingdom andasked them to pound rice. $he also asked the men to burn a lot of wood at the east side of the
kingdom. Hearing the sound of pounding and seeing a bright sky, the genies and spirits were
afraid. They ran away with only one more temple to complete. They thought the morning had
come.
Bandung Bondowoso was e%tremely angry when he found out what Roro Jonggrang
had done to him. He cursed Roro Jonggrang and turned her into a statue.
&f you visit 'rambanan temple in (ogyakarta you will see a statue of a beautiful
woman inside one of the temples. That is the Roro Jonggrang.
SNOW WHITE
Once there was a ueen giving birth to this beautiful baby. $he had this snow white
skin and red lips. The ueen and the king called her $now !hite. $oon after giving birth to
$now !hite, the ueen died and the king remarried a beautiful woman who was actually
wicked and mean.
The new ueen had a mirror that could tell her who was the most beautiful woman on
earth. )or years, she had been the most beautiful woman of all, but when $now !hite got
older, the mirror said that $now !hite was the most beautiful woman of all. The new ueen
was so *ealous that she decided to kill $now !hite. $he ordered a killer to kill $now !hite.
The killer took $now !hite to the forest, but he didn#t dare to kill her. He let $now !hite go.
$now !hite wandered around the forest alone and found a hut belonging to the seven
dwarfs where she stayed for a while. The wicked ueen was furious when she asked the
mirror who was the fairest woman of all, and the mirror said, +$now !hite is the fairest
woman of all.
The ueen the disguised her self as an old woman selling apples and went to the hut to
sell on to $now !hite. $now !hite ate the apple and she fell into a deep sleep. !hen the
dwarfs found her, they couldn#t do anything to help. $o, they put her in a glass coffin. They
thought she had died.Time passed by and one day a prince came to pass the forest and found $now !hite
in the glass coffin. He was fascinated by how beautiful she was and he feel in love with her.

He opened the coffin and kissed her. &t turned out that the kiss was the cure for her deep
sleep. The prince and $now !hite got married and they lived happily ever after.
THE MOUSEDEER’S TRICK
One day while a mousedeer was walking in the forest, he saw a big, black snakesleeping under the tree. !hen he saw the snake, the mousedeer was frightened. !hen he
wanted to run away from the snake, he suddenly fell on top of a tiger which was sleeping not
far from the snake. The tiger woke up and took hold of the mousedeer. He told the mousedeer
that he was going to eat him for lunch. +'lease don#t eat me now, said the mousedeer. +&
have something important to do.
+-ook, said the mousedeer. +That is the king#s belt. He asked me to stay here and
watch it while he was away in the forest. The tiger looked at the snake and said, +That is a
beautiful belt. & need a belt like that. an & wear it/ he asked the mousedeer.
+Oh, all right, said the mousedeer. $o he picked up the snake and winded it around
the tiger. Then the snake woke up and saw the tiger. The snake twisted it self tighter and
tighter, until the tiger couldn#t breathe. The tiger asked the mousedeer to help him. But the
mousedeer turned and ran away into the forest.
ROMEO AND JULIET
Romeo 0ontague and Juliet apulet lived in 1erona. They met at a party and it was
love at first sight. Their families were enemies so the young couple couldn#t meet in the open.
They got married in secret with the help of a priest, )riar -aurence, and Juliet#s maid.
Juliet#s cousin, Tybalt, hated Romeo and the 0ontagues. One day, he met Romeo andhis friend 0ercutio in the street. They had a sword fight and 0ercutio was killed. Romeo was
so upset that he attacked and killed Tybalt in revenge.
"s a result of this, Romeo had to leave 1erona to safe his life. He visited Juliet
secretly that night and then left for 0antua. Juliet#s parents wanted Juliet to marry 'aris, a
friend of the family. They arranged the marriage and Juliet was horrified. $he asked )riar
-aurence to help her. He suggested a plan, he gave her a drug t make her sleep for a long time
and appear dead to everyone else. !hen Juliet woke up, she could *oin Romeo in 0antua.
)riar -aurence promised to write to Romeo and e%plain the plan.
The night before the wedding, Juliet took the drug and her family found her dead inthe morning. The wedding celebration turned into a funeral. 2nfortunately, Romeo never
received the letter from )riar -aurence. He turned to 1erona, when he found Juliet#s body. He
thought she was dead and he was so devastated that he killed himself. !hen Juliet woke up
and saw Romeo lying dead beside her, she killed himself too, with his dagger.
"s a result of this tragic series of events, the apulets and the 0ontagues agreed to
stop fighting and live in peace together.
