Fall Festival 2018: A Fabulous Time by Winston with help from Dave and Angie Mills

What a day! My name is Winston and I just at-tended my first Mary Our Queen Fall Festival. I could not have had a better time. I was nervous when the day started, but thanks to the hospitality of everyone on 119th St., I was able to watch all the action from the safety of a driveway. I cannot believe how early everyone started cooking. Nothing says Fall Festival like the smell of the grill getting fired up...the fried rice, the egg rolls, the tacos, the pizza, and the funnel cakes... I put on 10 pounds just thinking about how delicious everything smelled.

What happens next? I hear the roar of 8000 horse power worth of Corvette engines coming to compete for the crown of crowd favorite. Then on the other end of the street I am drawn by the rhythmic tapping of Irish dance shoes. Only to be followed by one of the best bluegrass bands I have ever heard. To

top it off, they finished with an unbelievable 4 hours of cover music that spanned over 4 dec-ades of rock.

I was so distracted by the sounds and the smells that I did not notice the street had filled up with children. Kids launching water balloons. Kids riding a mechanical bull. Kids in hamster balls. Kids in dunk tanks. Kids carrying around gigantic stuffed animals. Kids and Fr. Gama playing soccer. I was exhausted just watching. And how did they keep it going all day? By eating shaved ice and washing it down with two liters of soda. Like I said, what a day!

A letter from the pastor Page 2, The Steward, September 2018

Dear Mary Our Queen Parishioners, I want to welcome Erica Reist as our new youth minister here at Mary Our Queen. She has just finished her studies at Creighton University with a Masters in Ministry. Jordan Moser is working on a teaching certificate in elementary education and will be student teaching at Rockwell Elementary School this fall. We wish her success in her new endeavor in the teaching field. The parish council church safety and security committee has been looking into securi-ty options for the church since church security seems to be more of an issue in this day and age. For Phase I, they are looking at implementing Catholic Mutual’s sug-gestion of locking all doors after each weekend Mass begins. The ushers would let in anyone who came late to Mass. The committee will then continue to evaluate other recommendations for addressing security issues in the church. The Building and Maintenance Committee has again been busy this summer. The main project they are focus-ing on is replacing all the windows in the school and gym with more energy efficient windows. This year they are just replacing one window so that the three bidding companies could more accurately provide bids for the windows. The windows will all be replaced next summer. Thank you to those who contributed to the MAR-QUEE Raise the Paddle for helping to fund this project. The committee is also working on roof, parking lot and sidewalk repairs this summer. The planning for the building of a new Early Childhood Education and Youth Center has been progressing. The architect has provided preliminary plans for the building, to be located on the corner of 119th and Valley. I en-courage all to attend a town hall meeting on Thursday October 4th at 7:00 to learn more about the project. The Mary Our Queen Tanzania Sister Parish Committee continues to move forward with projects for our sister parish in Ligera, Tanzania, Africa. They have raised and distributed funds for a solar panel electrical system and piped water system to the parish rectory, convent, dispensary, kindergarten and small meeting hall. In addi-tion, they have raised and distributed funds for a piped water system to the Ligera Primary School. The electric and water system should be finished by October of this year. Finally, they also purchased six bicycles for the six catechist who serve the parish with no mode of transportation. The next project the committee is looking at for the parish is a mini textile industry for the women. This would include purchasing sewing machines, fabric and two years of classes where the women would be taught sewing, marketing and the necessary business skills. May the Lord bless you all with his love, May God’s blessing be with you all,

Rev. Robert K. English

New Knights Leadership Team Takes Office by Frank Partsch

Vince Vigneri, who has played a leadership role in various parish activities includ-ing MOQ School and the MAR-QUEE, is the new leader of MOQ Knights of Columbus Council 11900. Vigneri was elected Grand Knight at the head of a slate of returning and new officers at the Council meeting in May. These

officers were installed in a July ceremony. New Deputy Grand Knight is Chris Lawlor. Eron Welchans, is the Chancellor. Other officers: Dave Ver-million, recorder; Tim Billesbach, treasurer, Giac Dona-to, warden; Tim Smth, Adocate; Archie Carpenter, Out-side Guard; Tim Burns, Inside Guard; Steve Olson, First-Year Trustee; Pat Dougherty, Second-Year Trus-tee; Kevin O’Hearn, Third-Year Trustee. Mike Gomez continues as Financial Secretary and Father Bob English as Chaplain. In May, the Council had its annual awards ban-quet, with district and Knights dignitaries in attendance. Ron and Shirley Haase were named the Knights Family of the Year and Frank Partsch was Knight of the Year. A special guest was Sister Stephanie Matcha, former MOQ staff member. In part because of the power of her wit-ness, the MOQ Knights have become ardent supporters of the Siena Francis House and the Notre Dame Sisters Othe events included the family picnic in August and the archdiocesan priests’ appreciation day in July. That event includes a golf outing for the clergy followed

by a steak fry at Mount Michael, with an MOQ team manning the refreshments stand. It’s a great opportunity to see friends in the priesthood and make new friends. The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 by Fr. Michael McGivney. One of its early areas of fo-cus was the fact that immigrant families were financially

ruined when the breadwinner was injured or killed in the prime of life. McGivney devised a frater-nal association in which small con-tributions by many members provided a death-or-injury benefit

to members who could no longer support their families. From these humble beginnings, the Knights’ fami-ly-protection structure has grown into one of the most successful and highly-rated insurance programs in the world. Its benefits, which include life insurance, annui-ties and long-term care protection, are available to all members in good standing. No less important, the bene-fits of membership include service to Catholic educa-tion, to the poor, to the cause of vocations and to the host parish. These are men who work together and pray together for the good of our parish and our community. New members are welcome. Contact Pat Dougherty, membership director, at 402-681-1949, with questions.

TNTs Are Busy with Many Activities by Mickey Riesberg

TNTS, MOQ’s over-50 group, kicked off its annual membership drive with a pot luck dinner Sept. 14th and will conclude Nov. 30th with a ca-tered dinner and entertainment by the Iowa Western Communi-ty College Show Choir.

We’ve hosted many events over the past few months. In May we went to Fontenelle Forest for a lecture as well as our 4th Eat Pray Love church tour. We visited Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Joseph, and St. Francis Cabrini, followed by lunch at Johnny’s Cafe. In July we had a festive indoor picnic catered by Bob Hurtado, with accordion music per-

formed by Wayne Miller. In Au-gust we boarded Ollie the Trol-ley at the Durham for the “Last Call for Alcohol: Prohibition History” tour, then enjoyed lunch at Cascio’s.In addition to upcoming membership events, we will attend Holiday Under Glass at the Joslyn in December. Card and Game Day continues on Fridays in the St. Joseph Room at 12:30. All TNTs are

encouraged to consider trying this fun activity. We also appreciate new ideas. Please bring them to our planning meeting the first Monday of each month at 10:30AM in the Upper Room. The TNTs thank you for your support.

Men’s Club Embraces Motto by Mark Lindauer

“Faith. Fellowship. Service” is the motto of the Mary Our Queen Men’s Club and a busy summer saw a multitude of ways for members to live out this theme.

The weather for this summer’s Picnics in the Parking Lot was much better than in 2017. We en-joyed great turnouts, and it was nice to see so many parishioners gathered together for food, music, and conversation. The final August picnic ushered in the new school year. The Men’s Club donated an iPad or a pizza party to the class for the highest attendance at the picnic (congrats to Mrs. Schepper’s class!) and the kids loved the competition.

Over the summer we also lent financial assis-tance to the Ben Petrzilka golf tournament and the landscaping needs of the church. Beyond financial assistance, we participated in the grounds clean-up in August as well as performing other general landscap-ing around the grounds throughout the summer. We called upon other organizations within our parish and we would like to thank all who came out to spruce up our grounds: Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Knights of Co-lumbus, Ladies Guild and Squires.

We participated in the Fall Festival, manning a food booth and providing drinks. This is such a spe-cial event, and it gets better each year. We hope you were able to stop by to enjoy the food, games, and live music! We will also be participating in the Trunk or Treat event put on by Home and School in October.

Even though it seems like a long way off, it is never too early to start thinking about our primary fundraiser, the Wild Game Feed. Tickets to this year’s Wild Game feed, to be held on February 2, 2018, will be available in December. This event al-ways sells out, so we encourage you to start planning your groups now! If you or your company are inter-ested in helping sponsor this event, please let us know.

Men’s Club meetings are held the first Mon-day of the month at 7:00 pm in the school cafete-ria. All adult men of the parish are welcome. If you are interested in learning more about the Men’s Club, you may contact Mark Lindauer at (402) 680-4014 or [email protected].

Mary Our Queen Boy Scout Troop 448 by Tim Burns

The troop had a big year filled with adventures. With over 30 registered scouts, they enjoyed many activities: summer camps at Camp Geiger (St. Joe, MO) and Medicine Mountain (Hill City, SD), an adventure trip to the Boundary Waters in Minnesota/Canada, and National Youth Leadership Training in Cedar Bluffs, NE. Through the summer they learned skills for camping, cave exploring, mountain climbing, and canoeing. The troop was also able to wrap our supply trailer (thanks to the Men’s Club) to better represent the troop and participate in many service events, including helping with landscaping around the parish, yard cleanup at the Louisville Care center, making blankets for children in need with Project Linus, and ringing bells for the Salvation Army. None of the things in which they participated would have been possible without the support from our Charter Organi-zation, the MOQ Men’s Club.

Left: Volunteers of the Men’s Club clean up the Mary Our Queen campus. Right: The final picnic in the parking lot had a record crowd and beautiful weather. A perfect way to celebrate the MOQ community and ring in the new school year.

The Ladies Guild is Off to a Record-Setting Year! by Mary Ann Tietjen

The first big event for this year was our in-volvement with the Fall Festival. Thanks to our raffle chair Julie Holz and her team, we had one of our most successful raffles in history. We solicited donations for our bake sale, cake walk, coin toss and jar booths and the record-setting response was overwhelming! Whether you baked, bought, solicited, donated, worked, or took a chance at one of our booths- we thank you for your support! We owe much of our suc-cess to our leaders Alice Burns and Lori Beiermann as well as Guild Treasurer Angie Mills who put in count-less hours of preparation for the big event. The money raised at the Fall Festival will help us fund the many activities we sponsor throughout the year, such as Golden Years, funeral lunches, and projects for the parish, school and religious education pro-gram. One example is the Golden Years monthly luncheon and bingo game that we host in the Kenny Center. We are consistently serving more than eighty senior citizens from our parish and greater Omaha community.

The Guild has so much to offer: monthly so-cials on the second Tuesday of each month, active Circles, and other groups like the ARK (Acts of Ran-

dom Kindness) Angels and Helping Hands. The ARK Angels share their talent by providing baked goods or other items for different parish activities. The Help-ing Hands group shares their time by working at re-ceptions, funeral luncheons or fish fries.

Our outreach continues to grow as do the par-ish activities we help sponsor and our efforts are al-ways to grow our membership as well. Are you look-ing to become more involved in our parish but don’t know where to start? We invite you to reach out and work (and play!) alongside the multiple generations of women who serve at Mary Our Queen. Whether you have been a member of the parish for 5 months or 50 years, please join us for our next meeting and/or email [email protected] and ask to receive our email updates.

Catholic Daughters: Speak Lord, for your Servant is Listening by Sherry Wittrock

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas Nation-al Convention was held in Sioux Falls, SD in July with the theme Speak Lord, for your Servant is Listening (Samuel 3:9) for the next two years. Mary Queen of Peace Court #2423 was represented by two delegates - Colleen Bermel and Jo Stewart, and two alternates - Evelyn Goodman and Mary Pat Roh. Barb Keuchel and

RoseMary Shald also at-tended for the State Officers. The number of charities and projects that National sup-ports were an eye opener for our representa-tives. CDA donated $268,464 in the last two years! Our

court donates $20 to each of the five National Projects so the donations made by all the courts from all the states combined show that Catholic Women can make a difference, if we all work together. Gina Mickell Tomes from Bethlehem House, an organization that provides assistance for mothers and their unborn child, relying on volunteers and donations, spoke at the June meeting. The average age of a woman who comes to Bethlehem House is 34 years old. Some of these women have been living on the streets, battling addictions and are truly abandoned. Some of the resi-

dents have traveled a great distance to get there; some-how they found out about Bethlehem House and the re-markable work they do. The average stay for a woman used to be about 4 to 5 months when they first opened but it is now a year. Gina Mick-ell Tomes shared, “Whether mom-my is battling an addiction from the past, trauma or abuse, we welcome them into our home and provide the love for them that they have never received. There is a lot of healing and relationship building with God.” When they establish a relationship with God they can experience what love really is. This is the first time they have experienced what true unconditional love is. Gina concluded with many thanks for all our support and our wonderful baby shower donations.

Catholic Daughters also remembered the Poor Clare Sisters. The graves of the Poor Clare Sisters were decorated for Memorial Day Weekend. Russell Wulf, husband of Mary Wulf, made the crosses and Rosie Matz decorated them. Barb Keuchel, Mary Lou Collins and Sherry Wittrock assisted with the placement of the crosses with the help of Mark Morehouse. Rosie Matz brought lunch to the Poor Clares in June. Kay Scarborough made desserts, Mary Ann McGrath made salad and Irene and Rosie Matz made a casserole. The sisters were very appreciative of the delicious meal.

Junior Catholic Daughters Serve Others by Mary Joslin

In May the Juniors’ opened with a May crowning cer-emony and officer installation ceremony. New officers are Regent - Kelly Wil-liams, Vice Regent – Meghan Williams, Recording Secretary – Christina Davis, and Treasurer – Miranda Knofczynski. May 31, the girls met for an end of school year/summer kickoff party. They had a potluck cookout and enjoyed a great time in the pool. They also created tie-dye JCDA t-shirts for their court and made plans for the upcoming year of events for their court. In July, at the Na-

tional Catholic Daughters Convention in Sioux Falls, SD., the Junior Catholic Daughters Court at MOQ won a National Award, over all the JCDA courts in the country, for their retreat that was held at Mary Our Queen this past February “Grace in Faith and in Action”. They are so excited for the up-coming year and enjoyed kicking off their year of activities at the MOQ Fall Festival with their LUCKY BUCKS cash drawing and their face painting booth.

Catholic Daughters Court Officers for June 2018 through May 2020 are (L to R) Judy Anderson (Financial Secretary), Jo Stewart (Treasurer), Barb Keuchel (Regent), Mary Ann McGrath (Vice Regent) and Mary Pat Roh (Recording Secretary).

Ligera, Tanzania Sister Parish Update by Katie Sommer

Imagine going to Mass, to school, or to your child's annual checkup and not having consistent elec-tricity or running water. The campus of our sister par-ish in Tanzania, Ligera, has dealt with just that. Mary Our Queen wanted to help our brothers and sisters with these challenges, and in late April, we were able to contribute enough funds for solar electricity and running water to the parish campus. This includes the church, rectory, convent, dispen-sary (health care clinic), kinder-garten, and a nearby public school.

The project, which was managed by local Tanzanian priests, began in early August. Fr. Gaston delivered the supplies on August 6 and work began the same day. Many parishioners pitched in and helped dig trenches and install the bat-teries and solar panels. For the first time in the parish's history, there was consistent lighting inside the church on August 9. The impact has been profound and mov-ing for both MOQ and Ligera!

On August 23, we sent Ligera funds for an ad-ditional motorcycle for the parish priests, as well as 6

months of subsidized gas money for the truck. Future funding includes security updates to an "outstation" chapel, in order to keep the Holy Eucharist present.

Keep your eyes open for a new Tanzania dis-play in the narthex, coming soon! We want to give

MOQ parishioners the opportuni-ty to get to know Ligera parish-ioners better, and will implement photos and family stories in this display area, so we can foster spiritual and emotional connec-tions across the globe. The 5-day and Religious Education children will also be having consistent lessons about the Tanzania pro-

ject. We always welcome your prayers and good thoughts for Tanzania.

Everyone is welcome to join our monthly meetings, which take place the second Wednesday of the month at 7PM in the church conference room. We look forward every month to seeing new faces, and welcome any questions, suggestions, or feedback you may have on this rewarding ministry.

Legion of Mary: Catholic Family Movie Nights by Linda Thomsen

The Legion of Mary began Catholic Family Movie Nights in June with the film “Clare and Francis.” It is a captivating story and was enjoyed by those who attended. We are grateful to MOQ’s Youth Ministry who did and will continue to provide popcorn and drinks for a small fee at the movie nights.

In August, we watched “The Passion of Bernadette,” the story of Bernadette Soubirous’ life after the ap-paritions at Lourdes. In September, we watched a film about Maria Goretti, one of our youngest canonized saints, who died at the age of 11. We are excited about our next film, "Power in My Hands," a brand-new film – a story of hope and the power of prayer, on October 12th at 7:00 PM in the Trinity Room. We hope you will come and bring your family or a friend! Admission is free, but we will take up a free will offering to help cover the cost of the rights to show the movie. Public performance and viewing of these films are being made possible through Ignatius Night at the Movies.

Mark your calendars for 7:00 PM on the second Friday of each month to attend movie night. We are all called to be saints, and what better way is there than to learn about how the saints lived their lives, so we can gain insight and inspiration for our own lives.

The Legion of Mary invites you to join us for the 19th Annual Candlelight Rosary Procession on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on Sunday, October 7, at 7:00 PM.

Begin with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in church and then process around the grounds of MOQ by candlelight while praying the Rosary. End with benediction and consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Come to honor Mary Our Queen!

Solar panels installed thanks to the generosity of Mary Our Queen parishioners.

Page 8, The Steward, September 2018 Mary Our Queen School Does Small Things with Great Love

by Maureen Hoy, Principal

Welcome to the 2018-19 school year! We are so blessed and excited to

begin this year together and continue our MOQ mission to form students of faith, academic excellence, and service. Each year our fac-ulty and staff select a theme that serves as an inspira-tion for our year. This year’s theme is, “Do small things with great love.” This theme will provide a steady reminder of two important parts of our school foundation: 1) Our daily ef-forts, commit-ment, and en-gagement pro-vide meaningful opportunities to give witness to God; and, 2) Sharing God’s love is at the root of our mission and work. As Pope Francis said, “Small gestures of love, of tenderness, of care, make people feel the Lord is with us.” We are looking forward to growing and building community during the school year with this theme as an important com-ponent of our message and prayer. 21st Century Learners At Work. 6th, 7th and 8th

graders are the first students to participate in the 1:1 de-vice program. The infusion of technology into instruc-tion will enable teachers to better individualize instruc-tion and prepare our stu-dents for high school. MOQ Preschool …Year Two. Just like our students,

the MOQ Preschool continues to GROW. This year we welcome over 65 preschool students into our 2, 3 and 5 half-day programs. Teachers Mrs. Anna Rosas (2-Day/3-Day) and Mrs. Lindsey Campbell (5-Day) have years of experience guiding young learners nur-turing a love of God, having respect for self and oth-

ers, and sparking the joy found in learning. It is a true blessing to work with children as they take their first steps in their education. STEM/Science. Mrs. Petersen, Assistant Principal, is

putting on another hat this year. In addition to teaching 6th grade science, she is our newly ap-pointed STEM Coordinator. As part of our mission of academic excellence, we are committed to incorporating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and

Math) education practices at all grade levels. Mrs. Petersen will provide instructional support and collab-orative coaching to create effective STEM learning experiences for students. Mrs. Clark, our Technology instructor, also incorporates STEM strategies in com-puter classes; everything from coding to 3D printing. This year, we are so grateful to our Home and School for designating Mustang March funds for purchasing STEM instructional materials. We are a 21st century school, educating 21st century learners! Grandparents/Grand Friends Day. Earlier this month over 400 grandparents and grand friends visit-ed classrooms to see their grandchildren in action. Our special guests were greeted by excited students eager to share details about classroom activities and friends. Students had an opportunity to get first-hand information about 20th century classrooms then com-

pare and contrast them with our 21st century classrooms and students. There were quite a few amazed students who learned that cursive handwriting was required and there was no such thing as the “internet”

when grandparents went to grade school. After class visits, we celebrated Mass together. Following Mass our grandparents/friends shared refreshments, fellow-ship and some welcomed quiet time together in the Trinity Rooms. Thank you to our Home and School for the Grandparent/Grand Friend reception. It was a wonderful day filled with only the joy a grandpar-ent/grand friend can bring!

Youth Ministry: A Summer of Fun, Faith, and Service by Erica Reist, Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry

The youth in our parish experienced a full summer, consisting of service projects, building con-nections, growing in their faith, and more! From World’s of Fun, to vacation bible school in Winneba-go, to a retreat at Steubenville in Colorado, there were so many wonderful opportunities for our youth to ex-plore and practice their faith with one another and the community.

The youth were able to have fun and build connections with each other at World’s of Fun and pizza with the priests, partake in the Winnebago Tribe’s Vacation Bible School at Saint Augustine Catholic Church and help prepare for and facilitate Mary Our Queen’s VBS, immerse themselves in ser-vice through Just 5 Days, and retreat to Colorado to attend a Steubenville conference.

This summer represented our goal to offer ho-listic youth group programming by focusing on em-power our youth in their faith, reflecting on the values of solidarity and Catholic Social Teaching, building community with one another, and opening hearts to the gift of prayer and worship.

This summer wrapped up with saying good-bye to Jordan Moser and welcoming the new director of youth and young adult ministry, Erica Reist. In ear-ly August, Erica hosted an evening of dinner, fellow-ship, and games for the youth.

High school youth group is held every Wednesday 7- 9 pm and middle school youth group is every other Monday also from 7 – 9 pm.

Busy Year for the Building and Maintenance Committee by Dick Liebentritt

The Building and Maintenance Committee has been working on many projects this year. Damage to the parking lot has been repaired and major repair and resurfacing will be required in the not-too-distant future. Sections of concrete sidewalk around the school were replaced. We are considering options to eliminate water leaks into the building and standing water at the school entrance west of the main church entrance. These op-tions include removing and replacing some and possibly all of the concrete to improve drainage. A new air conditioning system was installed for one of the preschool classrooms due to the inability of the existing equipment to adequately cool the space. One school classroom window was installed to provide information to assist in the bidding process for the rest of the school and gym. Egress issues were raised which require further investigation before proceeding with the bidding process. The committee is working with the local code offi-cials to clarify these requirements. The plan is to replace all the school windows next summer, thanks in large part to the generosity of the MARQUEE donors. The cooling tower for the Parish Center is in very bad condi-tion and needs to be replaced before next summer. We are working on an estimate and will get bids soon. The Committee has also participated in preliminary planning for a new Early Childhood Education and Youth Cen-ter. Committee members have assisted with various other projects not directly our responsibility.
