Whenyouapplyforajobbye-mail,it’simportantthatallyourcommunicationsareasprofessionalastheywouldbeifyouweresendingaprintedCVandcoverletter.

Somecompaniespreferyoutoapplyviathejobsite,wheretheyaskyoutoanswerafewintroductoryquestionsandattachanyapplicationdocuments.

Thesearetheitemsyoushouldincludewiththistypeofapplication:

• Acover letter—tailoritasfaraspossibletothejobyou’reapplyingfor.Anyoneusingastandardletterrunstheriskofbeingseenasuninterestedorunmotivated.

• ACV,withorwithoutaphoto—werecommendyouadaptyourCVtothejobyou’reapplyingfor.

Onceyou’vedecidedwhichtypeofCVyouwanttowrite,makesureyousticktoafewguidelines,listedbelow.Theymightseemobviousatfirstsightbutaresoeasytoforgetthatit’sworthtakingalookthroughthem.

No missing information RecruitershopetofindanswerstoalloftheirquestionswhilebrowsingyourCV.Soit’suptoyoutoputforwardallthekeyattributesrelatingtoyouandthejobroleinquestion.Experience,education,leisureinterests,...specifyanythingthatwillconvincerecruitersofyourqualities.Youcanofcoursementiontheareainwhichyouwanttowork.

A clear structureItshouldbeeasyforrecruiterstofindtheinformationthey’relookingfor.SothestructureofyourCVisasimportantasitscontent.Ifrecruiterscan’tgettheinformationtheywantataglance,yourchancesofgettingapositiveresponsewillreduce.Souseaclearstructurewithparagraphsandrelevanttitles.

Give your CV an original look AnoriginalCVisprobablynotappropriateforajobinfinance,butcanbeanassetwhenyouapplyforacreativejob.There’sthestoryofaguywhosentthecompanyhewantedtoworkforashoewithanoteattachedthatsaid:“togetmyfootinthedoor.”ThiskindoforiginalCVcanworkreallywellasitstandsoutfromtherestofthebatch.

Howeverthisdoesnotmeanyoushouldoverdoit—sometimesit’sbettertostaymorefactual.FirstthinkofaconceptforyourCVandusethisasabasetoshapeit.Andchoosesomethingthatsuitsyou:yourCVmayreflectapartofyourpersonality.Trytofindabalanceandmakesureallofthecontentisreadable.
