Indianapolis Motor Speedway History

� Founded in 1909 as an automobile testing facility, it quickly became the first significant motor sports venue in the United States

� By 1910 the crushed stone and tar track was resurfaced with 3.2 million paving bricks – giving the Speedway its nickname “The Brickyard”

� Four turns – 4.02 km (2.5 mile) oval

� Infield road course added in 1998 - 4.21 km (2.6 mile) track
