•8 Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, Amos 5:8
Now why would God bother to make a reference to a constellation like Orion?
• The seven stars are the seven sisters. They are also known as the constellation of the Pleiades.
• Smith, Chuck. "Amos 1-5," C2000 Series. The Word for Today. Blue Letter Bible. 7 Aug 2005. 4 Jul 2006. <http://www.blueletterbible.org/Comm/chuck_smith_c2000/Amo/Amo001.html>.
Orion is a star picture of ancient origin. But why would Amos say that God made it?
• Job gave God credit for creating the heavens and said God was the one who formed the constellations.
Pleiades in the dust
8 God alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.
9 God alone made Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south. (KJV)
Job 9
Job 26:13:
"By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent."
In Hebrew poetry the second phrase restates, emphasizes or explains the first. God decorated or frescoed the heavens. In doing so God formed one of the signs of the Zodiac—the crooked serpent.
God offered Job a challenge.
God asked Job:
"Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades or loose the bands of Orion?”
The Pleiades and Orion are the only constellations in the universe bound by gravity,
• Canst thou bring forth the Mazzaroth in his season?
• What is a Mazzaroth?
God was asking Job if he could determine what was going to happen in the twelve signs of heaven; Can you bring out the order in which I am going to display my handiwork in the heaven?
God made signs in the heavens and has been concerned with forming the constellations?
Why?
David tells us the Lord telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names." Psalm 147: 4
Gen 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for
signs,
