Introduction

Introduction

ButtonisasmallconsultancybasedinStaffordshire,specialisinginthedesignofinformationanddisplaysformuseums,heritagesitesandvisitorcentres,andeducationalpublishing.

Wehaveworkedonarangeofprojectsworkingwithhistoricallysensitiveartefacts,buildingsandenvironments,forclientsasdiverseaslocalvisitorcentrestoManchesterMuseum,theBodleianLibrary,CambridgeUniversity,theNationalTrustandBuckinghamPalace.Wehaveincludedacopyofourportfoliowiththissubmission,whichincludesmoredetailonpastprojects.

InDecember2010wewereinvitedtoproposeaconceptforapermanentexhibitionabouttheStaffordshireHoardatTamworthCastle,topromotediscussionandadvocacy.

The Staffordshire Hoard

TheStaffordshireHoard,whichwasfoundusingametaldetectorin2009,containsmorethan1500objectsandwasmadefromalmostfourtimesasmuchpreciousmetalasthe1939discoveryofSaxonitemsatSuttonHoo.Althoughsuchfindsareclearlyveryrare,theStaffordshireHoardisevenmoreso,becauseitiscomposedalmostentirelyofobjectsrelatingtowar,andparticularlyswordfittings.

TheextraordinaryqualityoftheworkmanshipshowstheitemswereoriginallyownedbypeopleattheveryhighestlevelsofSaxonsociety.TheproximityofthefindlocationtoTamworth,theMerciancapital,indicatesaverystrongconnectionbetweenthestoriesofboth.

ThehugeamountofmaterialinthehoardmeansthatourunderstandingofSaxonhistoryanditsbiastowardsEastAngliaandKentwillhavetoberethought.Tamworth,attheheartofthe‘militarilyaggressiveandexpansionist’1KingdomofMercia,willsurelyhaveacentralroletoplayinthenewunderstandingofSaxonsocietythatwillbefoundthroughresearchontheseremarkableitems.

Tamworth Castle and the Staffordshire Hoard Partnership

TamworthCastleispartoftheStaffordshireHoardMercianTrailPartnership,whichincludesTamworthCastle,LichfieldCathedral,andStaffordinaconsortiumwithBirminghamMuseumsandArtGalleryandthePotteriesMuseumandArtGallery.

MuseumandArtGallery.Thetwohaveabilateralmanagementagreement,whichextendstotheMercianTrailPartnership,andthishasresultedinaStaffordshireHoardtravellingexhibitionaswellasplansforpotentialpermanentexhibitionsatthepartnersites.

Thetouringexhibition,whichfeaturesstaritemsfromtheStaffordshireHoardwilltraveltoStafford’sShireHallandLichfieldCathedralandwillcometoTamworthCastlefromSaturday27AugusttoSunday18September2011.ThehoarditemsthengoontourintheUnitedStatesofAmerica.

WhenthehoarddisplayfirstopenedattheBirminghamMuseumandArtGallery,peoplequeuedoutsideforticketsinalinethatstretchedbacktotheGasHall.InterestinthetouringexhibitioninTamworthisstrong.‘ThisisTamworth’reportedonFriday18Februarythatstaffwerehandling“aninfluxofmorethan100callsaday”forticketstothehoardtouringexhibitionatTamworth.

ThefirstpictureinthePortableAntiquitiesSchemeStaffordshireHoardseriesonphotographicresourceFlickrhasreceivedover26,000hitsfromwebusers.

AnewpermanentexhibitionabouttheStaffordshireHoardwouldincreasedwelltimeandvisitornumberstoTamworthCastleandhasthepotentialtodriveincreaseddestinationvisitstothetownandareaasawhole,withassociatedbenefitstolocalbusinesses.

Outline design concept - ‘Mercian Power and Influence’

ThepurposeoftheexhibitionwouldbetointerpretpiecesoftheStaffordshireHoardinrelationtoTamworthasthecapitalofMerciaandseatoftheMercianKings,lookingatthehoard’sRoyalandbattleconnections,Kingsandtribute.ThisapproachcomplementsthethemesofdisplaysatotherlocationsintheMercianTrailPartnership.Partnersitesarefocusingonotheraspectssuchasthehoard’secclesiasticalconnections(LichfieldCathedral)andcraftsmanshipandinternationalconnections(BirminghamMuseumandArtGallery).

Tamworth’sthemesofRoyalty,battles,Kingsandtributearedynamicsubjectswithmassappeal.

ShowcasingHoarditemsbydisplayinglocalandregionalviewsonSaxonlife,thenewgallerywouldappealtolocalvisitorsaswellasattractingvisitorsfromfurtherafield,offeringnewwaystoengagewiththehistoryofTamworthandthewiderarea.

Theproposedgalleryspaceispresentlythelocationofthe‘TamworthStory’.

Theoutlinedesignconceptforthenewdisplaysis‘MercianPowerandInfluence’.ThethemescoveredinthedisplayshavebeenspecifiedinTamworthCastle’sexhibitionsynopsisas:

• Introduction to Saxon society:theinvasion,theset-upofthekingdoms,whowasincharge andthehierarchyofsociety.

• The Kingdom of Mercia:theindividualkings,whatweknowaboutTamworthinSaxontimes, thesetupoftheburh/defensiveenclosure.WhatthearchaeologicalexcavationsinTamworth cantellusaboutthesettlement,theareaoftheenclosureandlinkstotheexistingbailey area.Howthekingtravelledaround.

• Kingdom as a society based on tribute, military aggression and defence.Howarmieswereset up,clotheswarriorwouldwear,militarygiftstowinrankandstandingwiththeKingand Overlord.MercianincludingoneatWall.

• Anglo Saxon Tamworth: theSaxonmill,tradeincludingtradeOffaundertookwith Charlemagne,TamworthasanimportantsiteatChristmasandEasteraccordingtoarchive evidenceandtheexistenceofOffa’spalace,theroyalmint.ShowlinkstoGlascoteTorcand otherlocalTorcfoundinTamworth.

Approach

ForapermanentexhibitionofStaffordshireHoarditems,theinterpretationshouldcombineartefacts,information,hands-onactivities,andselectedaudiovisualcontent.Usingavarietyofmulti-sensoryformatstosuitvisitorsofdifferentages,backgroundsandlearningstylestheexhibitionshouldprovideastrongvisitordrawandapowerfulnewadditiontotheexistingattractionsatTamworthCastle.

Security

Theselectedgalleryisasecurelocationfordisplayingthehoard.BritishMuseumcompliancestandard,duallockeddisplaycaseswouldbeused.AsidefromthephysicalprotectionaffordedbyBritishMuseum-standardcases,analarmsystemmeetingGrade2EuropeanStandardsforintruderalarmswouldbespecified.Eachcasewouldcontainindividualalarmsensorswitharadiorelaytotheexistingalarmsystemoranindependentalertmechanismsuchasableep.Inadditioncaselightingshouldbesituatedabovethecasesratherthanwithin,sothatitcanbeaccessedformaintenancewithoutneedingtoenterthespaceinwhichtheobjectsareenclosed.

Conservation

Displaycaseswouldcontainappropriateenvironmentalmonitoringandcontroldevices.Expertadvice,specifictotheseobjects,willbesoughtandfollowed.

TamworthCastleisaScheduledAncientMonument,andallplannedinterpretationwillbesensitivetotherequirementsofworkingwithsuchanimportanthistoricbuilding,dealingwithScheduledMonumentConsents;ensuringtheprotectionof,andminimuminterventionto,thefabricoftheCastleandofferinginformationandpromotingvisitorengagementinasympatheticmannerwithoutinterruptingtheviewsofthehistoricfabricofthebuildings.

WithinthecurrentTamworthStoryexhibition,thewallsareofnewmaterial,thefloorcarpetedandtheceilingamixtureoforiginalexposedtimberbeamsandmorerecentpanelinfill.Allfixtures,fittingsandfixingpointsshouldbeintonewmaterial,forinstanceusingsplitbattenstosecurewall-mountedpanelsandactivities.

Thegalleryspacegivesroomforamixtureofimmersiveexperience,activities,displaysandinformationtoprovidethesettingforitemsfromthehoarditself.

Visitor Flow

Unusually,thephysicalgalleryspacelendsitselfwelltodisplayssetoutasaconsecutivestorywheretherewillbeanobviousandintuitivepathtofollow.IfthestaffwanttoguidetourvisitorsdirectlytothedisplaycasescontainingtheStaffordshireHoardobjectsorifvisitorswouldliketoheadstraightforthispartofthedisplay,thereisashortcutforthemtotake,andthedisplaywouldworkwellforpeoplewhoonlyseethis.Thedisplaywillalsoworkforlearnerswhoorderinformationrandomlyratherthaninlinearprogression.

Asvisitorscomeupthestairwellfromthehistoricroomdisplays,anillustratedgraphicpanelpreparesthemforthechangeofpacefromtheseriesofhistoricroomsettingstothespecialexhibitionabouttheSaxonhistoryofTamworthandtheStaffordshireHoard.

ThefirstdisplaysinthegallerysetthesceneonSaxonsocietyandprovidealaunchingpointfortheremainderoftheexhibition.ExplainingwhentheSaxonperiodwas,wheretheSaxonscamefrom,andchallengingvisitor’sperceptionsofthetimegivesafoundationonwhichtobuildthestoryofTamworthandtheStaffordshireHoard.

Asvisitorsenterthegallery,theycomeintotheBurhandjointhemarketstallsdisplayinglocalwares.SaxontradersandvisitorstotheBurhgoabouttheirdailylives.Asoundscape,activatedonentryusingpassiveinfra-red(PIR)sensorsplaysthevoicesoftraders,shoppersandsoldiers,minglingwiththenoiseofthebusylifeofthesettlement.Thevisualdisplaywillbeacompatibleandsuitablebackdropforlivecostumedguidestointeractwiththevisitors,andtheaudiosoundtrackcanbeturnedoffifdesirableforliveinterpretationorspecialisttalks.Inthesamewayasapicturetellsathousandworks,theimmersiveexperiencedrawsthevisitorintothegallery,conveyingmultiplemessagesabouttime,placeandsociety.

Thesurfaceofoneofthemarketstallsisadaptedtotakeaninsettouchscreen.

VisitorsareencouragedtofindoutmoreabouttheBurhusinganinteractiveillustrationwithanimationsimilartotheAngloSaxonVillageofWestMuckingcurrentlyshownontheStaffordshireHoardwebsite.

Visitorscanhoveroverdifferentaspectsoftheillustration.Astheydo,objectsorfeaturesofthesettlementarehighlightedandafactaboutthemisshown.

What we know about Tamworth in Saxon Times

Onthelefthandwall,anillustratedgraphicpanelconsiderswhatweknowofTamworth’searlyhistory,fromthefirstofficialmentionofthesettlementin781.

ThepanelsetsoutTamworth’sroleasadministrativecapital,whilstLichfieldwastheMerciancentreforreligiousworship.Someofthemajorsites,charactersandeventsarementioned,suchasOffa’spalaceandAethelflaeda’sfortificationofthesettlementin913.

Who was in charge?

Runningthroughoutthegallery,audiolisteningpointswouldbeusedtolookatthehierarchyofthesociety,whowasincharge,andthedetailofpeople’severydaylives.

Theinterpretationlooksatwomen’srolesandterminologyfortheirroles(suchasalewiforhenwif).Italsoconsiderswomenwhohadmoreunusualrolesasgardenersorentertainers,orwholivedalifeofpower,diplomacyandmilitarymight,suchasAethelflaeda.ItasksvisitorstothinkaboutwhichwiftheymightbeinSaxontimesortoday(Designwif?Housewif?)

Archaeology and Tamworth

Asthegallerywidensoutbeyondthecentraldividingwall,weproposetositethe‘Powerandinfluence’collaborativedigitalgame,whichdrawsinformationfromalltheotherareasofthegallery.

Usinganinteractivemulti-touchtableoratouchtablewithoverheadprojection,thisactivityusesaquizaboutSaxonlifetoencouragevisitorstointeractandlearnmoreaboutthekingdomofMercia.Thequizwouldshowaseriesofquestions,andvisitorscancollaboratetoanswerblocksofquestionscorrectly.Eachblockcausesanewelementtobeaddedtothecentralprojectionarea,buildinganhistoricalmapoftheKingdom.

TheMemoryKingactivitygivesvisitorsinformationabouttheindividualSaxonKingsandthedatetheyruled.ThegameshowsquestionsaboutSaxonrulers,accompaniedbyapanelofninebuttons(3rowsof3)thatlightupinrandomorder.Threelightupatfirst,associatedwiththreehistoricalfactsaboutearlySaxonrulers.

Witheachturn,morelightsshowandplayershavetorememberthegraduallyincreasingsequence.ThememorygameinvolvedinrememberingandfollowingthelightsequencehelpspeopleremembertheKingsandtheroyalfactsthatgowiththem.

AfullcorrectsequenceoflightscausesalltheportraitsoftheSaxonKingstobebacklitandthegameresetsforthenextperson,orafteraperiodofinactivity.

Nexttothegame,wewouldproposeaplinthforstoring/displayingtheKingOffacostume,whichweunderstandhasbeencommissionedaspartofanearlierphaseofwork.Theplinthcouldbemovedtoanyconvenientlocationintheendofthegallery,andwouldbeusedtostorethecostumewhennotbeingwornbyaliveinterpreter.

Saxon Christmas and Easter

TheroyalfamilyoftenspentChristmasandEasteratTamworthasshownbydatedroyalcharters.AnillustratedgraphicpanelwouldlookattheSaxoncelebrationsandtheuseofchartersgrantinggiftsoflandandwritsgivinginstructionsfromtheKing.AnumberofSaxoncharterssurvivetothisday;imagesofthemcouldbeusedtoshowthecontent,beautifulwritingandhelptointroducethenextactivity.

Royal Correspondence

Offa’sinfluenceextendedintointernationaldiplomacyasshownbyhiscorrespondencewithCharlemagne.TheywroteonmanysubjectsandCharlemagneevenreferredtoOffaas‘brother’,theonlyrulerwhoheisknowntohavetreatedinthisway.

DiplomaticrelationswereputinjeopardyandcorrespondencestoppedforatimeafterCharlemagnesuggestedthathissonCharlesshouldmarryoneofOffa’sdaughters,andOffa

counteredwiththesuggestionthathissonEcgfrithshouldalsomarryCharlemagne’sdaughterBertha.CharlemagnedidnotmindallegiancestrengtheninghisowninfluenceoverMercia,buthedidnotwantthesametobetrueinreverse!

The Saxon Watermill

ThenextareaofthegallerylooksatthestrategicimportanceofTamworthandthepresenceofitswatermill,usedforgrindinggrain.Atthetime,mostpeoplewouldhavegroundgrainathomeusingsmall-scalequernstones.MillswouldhavebeenmuchmoreunusualthantheybecameinlateryearsandthepresenceofoneinTamworthisamarkoftheimportanceofthesettlement.ThisisshownbythecorrespondencebetweenOffaandCharlemagneinwhichmillstonesweretradedforEnglishwoollencloaks.

A3-dimensionalmodelwouldbeusedtoshowtheconstructionofthewatermillandallowvisitorstoexplorehowitworked.

Coinage and the Royal Mint

AninformationpanelshowingSaxoncoinsandtalkingabouttheimportanceofthemintthatwasestablishedatTamworth.

ExploringSaxonSocietycontinuesbylookingatSaxonarmies.Adressing-upareawithSaxonclothesincludingsoldiersclotheswouldbeprovidedhereforvisitorstotryon.ThepanelalongsidewouldgivepeopleachancetofindoutwhatSaxonsoldiersworeandtheranksandtypesofSaxonsoldiers.

Local Battles

Thenextpanellooksatwhatweknowaboutlocalbattlesandgivescontexttotheactivitiesopposite.
