All living things change – plants, animals, and us. We call the church “the body of Christ” and we see it as a living thing. And like all living things, it must change if it is to continue to be living and relevant. Even God changed! A common cli- ché is that “God is the same – yester- day, today, and tomorrow.” But God did change and when God changed, it was always to being even more loving and more merciful (read the story of Jonah – and not just the “fishy” part!). And yet throughout all this change, we are still called to that which makes us a church. We are called: to “Go therefore and make disci- ples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” to celebrate God’s Love and Serve in Jesus’ Name to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shel- ter the homeless, care for the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. Yet as we seek to do what God is calling us to do, we must always seek ways of doing so in new and effective ways. So, how are you a part of the ministry at Saint Matthew that seeks to answer Je- sus’ call in new and effective ways? How are you using the gifts that God has given to you to answer your own call to ministry? How are you blessing others as you have been blessed? It’s an interesting time to be the church. Do you know what the seven holy words of many congregations are? They are: We’ve never done it

that way before. I’ll admit it. I don’t like change any more than the next person (I am, after all, Luther-an!). But change

does happen – in our world, in our lives, and in our church. There are changes happening at Saint Matthew. Your senior pastor of 14 years is no longer here. You have an interim lead pastor (me!) and you’re not sure what to expect. And you will have a new senior or lead pastor at the end of your call pro-cess. But that’s okay. Change, even though it is not always comfortable, is necessary. All living things change – plants, animals, and us. We call the church “the body of Christ” and we see it as a living thing. And like all living things, it must change if it is to continue to be living and relevant. Even God changed! A common cli-ché is that “God is the same – yester-day, today, and tomorrow.” But God did change – and when God changed, it was always to being even more loving and more merciful (read

the story of Jonah – and not just the “fishy” part!). And yet throughout all this change, we are still called to that which makes us a church. We are called: ♦ to “Go therefore and make disci-

ples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

♦ to celebrate God’s Love and Serve in Jesus’ Name

♦ to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shel-ter the homeless, care for the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead.

Yet as we seek to do what God is calling us to do, we must always seek ways of doing so in new and effective ways. So, how are you a part of the ministry at Saint Matthew that seeks to answer Je-sus’ call in new and effective ways? How are you using the gifts that God has given to you to answer your own call to ministry? How are you blessing others as you have been blessed? It’s an interesting time to be the church. And it’s a fun time too! Peace + Pastor Rob Moore, Interim Lead Pastor

We look forward in gratitude to serving you in 2019. On Sunday, November 18, WE WELCOMED NEW MEMBERS to St. Matthew by Affirmation of Baptism :

Amanda Bynacker with sponsor Steven Bell Marie-Louise Hollabaugh

Amanda Bynaker – I have lived in Hanover all my life. I work for UTZ Quality Foods in the Accounting Dept. I have two children Tyler and Katie. I have two cats Tabby and Oliver. I love spending time with my kids and watch-ing them play sports. I also love to bake and cook.

Brian Shea – I have been a Hanover resident since 1992 and currently sit on Borough Council. I work in marketing at the Johns Hopkins University Press. In my free time I perform improv come-dy with the Baltimore Improv Group, serve as President of the Hanover Little Theatre and officiate high school wres-tling.

THE 2019 CHURCH ENVE-LOPES will be available in the Fellowship Hall hallway beginning December 5.

AS A REMINDER TO THE CONGREGATION, any monies put in the special holiday envelopes which are in your envelope box becomes part of our com-mitment to our world mis-sion outreach. This is a practice that has been in force at St. Matthew for many years and has been approved by Church Coun-cil.

PLEASE BE SURE TO FILL OUT a green communion card for this year, 2018, by Decem-ber 31. Our Constitution states that in order to maintain “active member status,” you must commune at least once a year and report it. Many of you have already filled one out -- no need to do it again until 2019. There will be extra cards at the Hospitality Desk if you have family members visit throughout December.

A SHADES OF IRELAND TOUR is being planned for October 16-25, 2019. That may seem like a long time away, but now is a good time to consider joining this tour. Brochures are available at the Hospitality Desk and in the church office. There will be a travel presentation by a Collette representative on Thurs-day, February 14, at 6:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Mark your calendars now.

HOLY BOWLERS meets for Bible study and bowling the first and third Thursday of each month at South Hanover Lanes. Bible study begins at 1:00 p.m. This year, we are

studying the lectionary—the lessons read in worship. Miss Jan will choose one of the lessons to focus on each week. Bowling begins at 1:45 and is $5 for three games, including shoe rental. We bowl for fun, not competition, so all skill levels are welcome. A CHILDREN’S SERMON will be offered during both services on Sun-day, December 16 and Sunday, Jan-uary 20. As our Sunday School cur-riculum is based on the lectionary, our children’s sermons also focus on one of the Sunday readings. Hearing God’s word in Sunday School and in worship helps to reinforce the message of love for children. All children in the 6th grade and younger are invited to come forward following the reading of the gospel to share this special time. CYBER WOMEN meet the 3rd Monday of each month at Panera, 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Our next meet-ings will be December 17 and January 21. We use the on-line magazine, Café, to start our conversation. You may find it at www.boldcafe.org. Women of all ages are welcome! ST. MATT’S LUNCH-OUT goes Italian on Decem-ber 13 with lunch at La Cucina. Then on January 10, we’ll enjoy “local cuisine” at the Starlight Diner. Lunches begin at 11:45 a.m. All are welcome to at-tend.

A CHRISTMAS PAGEANT is a wonder-fully traditional way for children, youth and adults to experience the Nativity Story. Our Sunday School children are working on their production for Sunday, December 16, 9:15 to 10:15 in Fellowship Hall. With

shepherds and sheep, wise people and of course, Mary and Joseph, all are invited to sing along with Christmas carols as the story unfolds.

YOUTH GROUP is open to all 7th through 12th graders. If your fall schedule kept you from attending our events, it’s not too late to start. We love when new friends come to our group!

December 2 is a regular meeting in the Youth Suite from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Our senior high youth will be attending Winterfest at Spooky Nook the week-end of December 8 and 9. (Registration has closed for this event.) The annual Christmas party will be held on December 16, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Youth Suite. Please bring a wrapped single-serve food item for Ruth’s Harvest. During the gift exchange, your food item will get you a fun gift. Don’t tell what it is when you arrive! We’ll take our annual photo to brighten the Christmas season for our shut-ins. Be sure to wear something festive! THE FAMILY FAITH RESOURCE ROOM is open each Sunday morning for parents, grandparents and others with children in our Sunday School. You may pick up the weekly take-home sheet that has ideas about how to share the lesson with your children. There are several books from our church library to read at home to/with your children. More resources are being added all the time, so please check it out when you bring your child to Sunday School.

COVER TO COVER has disbanded, but our library is full of great reading material! This month, Miss Jan recommends two books that could make good Christmas gifts for readers. They are also available for borrowing from our library. As the holidays approach, John Grisham’s

“Skipping Christmas” may put the season into a new perspective. From the book’s cover: “Imagine a year without Christmas. No crowded malls, no corny office parties, no fruitcakes, no unwanted presents. That’s just what Nora and Luther Krank have in mind when they decide that they’ll skip the holiday altogeth-erR..But, as this weary couple is about to discover, skipping Christ brings enormous consequences.” For more serious reading, pick up Judy Picoult’s “Nineteen Minutes.” Although written in 2007, this book about a school shooting unfortunately remains very timely. The book is written from many vantage points—the shooter, his parents, surviving victims and their parents and several in the legal system. It raises significant questions for you to think about.

The Women of the ELCA will be assem-bling the PERSONAL CARE KITS for Lu-theran World Relief on Monday, Decem-ber 3. People who must flee their homes quickly often do not have time to pack essential items. Personal Care Kits can help refugees maintain personal hy-giene while living in exile. The Kits also contribute to a new start for those who can return home. Thanks to all of you, a total of 157 Personal Care Kits have been completed and sent to LWR from St. Matthew since November 2017. Our goal is to top last year’s number. In order to do that, we need the following items. You may drop them off in the designated boxes located in the elevator lobby or the church office. WE NEED THESE ITEMS: *One new bath-size towel (approx. 52” x 27”), dark color recom-

mended *Two bath-size bars (4-5 oz.) of soap (must equal 8-9oz.), in its

original wrapping One adult-size toothbrush in its original packaging (at present, we

have an abundance of these) *One sturdy comb (wide-toothed preferred) *One metal nail clipper All items should be NEW, and in good condition. If you have ac-cess to Amazon, these items can be purchased in bulk. THANK YOU!

ARE YOU CPR CERTIFIED? Can you attend one service of your choice approximately every other month? (We hope you’ll attend more often than that!) We have an op-portunity that you won’t be able to re-fuse! We are in need of a few Emer-gency Persons to help cover our ser-vices. I have been doing it for over 10 years and only once did I need to help someone and call the ambulance. Please call me if you would be willing to offer your help or if you have any questions. THANKS! Doris Deitzel, 717-637-7101 Ext. 225, Tuesday or Thursday 12-3:30, or cell, 717-421-9368.

Our Mini Minister Puppets will present a show on

December 31, New Years’ Eve,

7 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Invite your friends and

neighbors for this

family-oriented, entertaining show! Light refreshments will be provided.

A great way to celebrate the new year!

COME JOIN US as we Christmas carol to some of

our shut-ins on Sunday, De-cember 16. To keep our carolers safer and to better serve our shut-ins who go to bed early, we will be caroling from 2-4 p.m. Bring a plate of cookies to share at the conclusion of our af-ternoon of sharing the Christmas Spirit! Song sheets will be provided. This special time of song and fellowship is so meaningful

to our members. Bring the entire family! Our shut-ins seem to especially enjoy when our

children join in. We will meet in Fellowship Hall and carpool, plus take the church van.

UNHANGING OF THE GREUNHANGING OF THE GREUNHANGING OF THE GREUNHANGING OF THE GREENS ENS ENS ENS - Sadly, our beautiful decorations will need to come

down on Sunday, December 30, immediately

following the 10:45 service. If everyone could

help for a short time, we could have the decora-

tions taken down and put away very quickly.

We would be grateful for your assistance.

CONGREGATION MEETING: At the Congrega-tion meeting held Sunday, November 11, the proposed

budget for 2019 was passed and Karen Axline, Beth Koontz, Ardis Kunde, Vicki Wildasin and Emily Crouse (youth representative) were elected to congregation council. We heartily thank those Council members who have fin-ished their 3-year term, Nina Kess-ler, David Kurtz Jr., Jody Ruhlman, Linda Sanders, Lori Unger and Youth Representative Matthew Faust. Pianist Joseph Martin will be joined by Heather Sorenson, Richard Nichols, Steve Roddy and a 100-voice choir of choral direc-tors in concert on Friday,

January 18, at 7:00 p.m. This is always a great evening! The concert is part of a two-day event featuring the music of Shawnee Press/Hal Leonard Pub-lishing. The pianists/vocalists/French Hornist will offer their own arrangements and the choir will sing several songs written by the featured guests. The music will be accompanied by organ and piano. The guest musicians entertain the audience with comical comments on music and

music makers but also share inspiring stories of the power of music. The Saturday, January 19 workshop for choral directors is attended by hun-dreds of musicians from the East Coast. The Friday evening concert is free and open to the public, but a ticket is required to at-tend. Please send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to “January Concert, St. Matthew Lu-theran Church, 30 W. Chestnut Street, Hanover, PA 17331” with the number of tickets you are re-questing. Please send your request by Decem-ber 20. Tickets will be mailed January 2. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for this open-seating concert. A free-will offering will be collect-ed during the concert.
