Siblings in Christ,

I pray that the summer was restorative to you in your mind, body and soul. I pray that we are ready for a new

school year full of conversation, discussion and God’s love. As we begin our program year at St. Luke I have

been reflecting on the most recent book I read, A House United: How the Church can Save the World by Allen

Hilton. The basic premise of this book is that throughout our country we have excessively polarized ourselves to

the point of only surrounding ourselves with like-minded individuals. We do this in church as well, finding

ourselves in an echo chamber of sameness where we do not hear other perspectives, interpretations or views.

We have come to an overall experience of ‘us’ versus ‘them’ and set the goal to expel the ‘thems’ from our

lives and society.

As I reflect upon this concept and theory, I realize that I do this as well. I surround myself with other like-

minded individuals regarding political affiliations, societal expectations, and my interpretations of the Bible.

There is comfort in hearing others who affirm my thoughts, opinions and beliefs, but if I only surround myself

with those who think exactly like me I am missing out, I am missing Jesus’ call to be one Body of Christ. In

1 Corinthians 12:14-18 Paul writes, “Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15

If the foot

were to say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make it any less a part of the

body. 16

And if the ear were to say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make

it any less a part of the body. 17

If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body

were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18

But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each

one of them, as he chose.”

Each and every one of us are called child of God. We each bring different understandings and interpretations of

what it means to live as a child of God. This is good. Diversity is a gift. When we only surround ourselves with

those who believe exactly the same, we are not challenged to grow in faith or adapt to an ever-changing world.

I encourage each of us to prayerfully discern where God continues to call each of us. I pray that we would

engage in difficult conversations – especially ones in which we do not agree with everyone around the table.

I know I have said this before, but there is more than one right way to live a life of faith and to believe in God.

Each of us has a unique perspective and understanding. Each of us are faithful and live lives where we strive to

love and care for our neighbor to the best of our ability. I pray that we would grow in togetherness and

encourage the conversations and discussions that are most challenging.

GOD SIGHTINGS COLUMN: God sightings are everywhere – God is ever present and always active, making all things new through God’s

amazing love. I have seen God in the people of St. Luke. You regularly come to the aid of your brothers and

sisters in Christ when they are sick, ill, in the hospital and in need. I have seen compassion through making

meals for folks going through a tough time. I have seen generosity through you with the gift of a love offering

to help a family with a significant life change. I have seen the dedication of your prayers for those on our prayer

list. I thank you for celebrating the love of God and sharing the abundant blessings in your lives. May we

continue to be a witness to God at work in the world.

Sunday School and Confirmation Classes Resume on Sunday, September 8th at 9:15 am

New at St. Luke's - BIBLES!

During baptisms we covenant with God promising to place the Holy Scriptures in

the hands of the newly baptized. We have begun giving the frolic First Bible to

newly baptized infants and after discussion with the Spiritual Relations Committee

we are happy to announce that we will continue to take this promise seriously. We

will now be giving age appropriate Bibles to children as they enter Sunday school

(age 3/4) and when they are entering 2nd grade. For years St. Luke has been giving

Bibles to entering Confirmation students and we will continue to do this. Since we

haven't given Bibles in prior years, ALL CHILDREN will be receiving a Bible on

Sunday, September 8th at the worship service of their choice. Children entering

Sunday school for the first time through 1st grade will receive frolic Preschool

Bible. Children in grades 2-6 will receive Whirl Story Bible. Seventh graders beginning the Confirmation

program will receive Colaborate: Lutheran Student Bible. Please contact Pr. Becky with questions and please

let her know if there will be a new student! Thank you for your support as we live into our baptismal covenant

to share the Word of God with all people.

The Centre Hall/Potter Food & Fuel Pantry will have their next monthly food distribution on Tuesday, September 17, at Grace United Methodist Church. Volunteers start by packing boxes from 8:00-10:00 am and Food Distribution will be from 12:30-4:00 pm. Paper products (paper towels and toilet paper) as well as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap and cake mixes are always needed and cannot be purchased with State or Federal funds. We are unable to accept baby food at this time. If you have a donation of baby food to make, please contact Pr. Becky.

The donation box is located in the Narthex. If you would like to make a monetary donation, you may speak with Bonnie Brown at 364-1541.

Volunteers are always needed…to pack boxes at 8am on distribution days or to sign up to unload food when it arrives at Grace Church. Funeral Meal Ministry—The Funeral Meal Ministry Committee met on August 6th and St. Luke Council

approved the policy recommendations from the Committee. They are listed below and available in the Narthex. Given this revamped information, we are asking for you to fill out a Funeral Meal Ministry Volunteer Form. They are available at both entrances. We are hoping to find folks who are willing to be coordinators of meals, servers, willing to donate food, and set-up/clean-up of tables and chairs. If you have questions, please contact Pr. Becky. Thank you for your ministry to those in their time of grief.

Funeral Guidelines Members:

a. Use of building – no charge. b. Meat will be paid for by the family. c. Other food and drinks will be provided by the congregation.

a. The Funeral Meal Ministry Committee will designate Coordinators and Callers to obtain donations b. The cost of items not able to be received by donation to be provided by St. Luke Congregation.

d. Charge for cleanup of $50.00 to be paid to the respective funeral home. In turn the funeral home will remit payment of $50.00 to this congregation for the custodial cleanup.

Non-Members: a. Use of building: $250.00 to be paid to the respective funeral home. In turn the funeral home will remit payment of $250.00 to this congregation for the use of the building. b. Food and servers will be provided by the family; unless other arrangements are made with this congregation. c. Church member must be present that knows the kitchen. d. Pr. Becky is going Over the Edge for Interfaith Human Services (IHS) on October 17, 2019. She will rappel 12 stories from the Fraser Centre/Hyatt Place in downtown State College. Please support her in this fundraising cause so that more ministry can happen in Centre County through this amazing and life-giving organization. The St. Luke Choir is now rehearsing on Thursdays at 7pm in the

Sanctuary. All voices are welcome to help make a joyful noise unto

the Lord!

The Sewing Group will resume quilting on Tuesday, September 10th from 9am to 2:30pm. Come for all or part of the day. You do not need to know how to sew, there is a job for everyone. A potluck luncheon is shared at noon.

Nittany Conference God’s Work, Our Hand’s – Join us for a God’s Work, Our Hands community event at The Oaks in Pleasant Gap on Sunday, September 15th from 2:30-4:30. There will be activities for all ages. Activities will include yard work and indoor projects with the residents.

Book Group – Our next selection is Evie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes. We will gather to discuss on Wed. Sept. 25th at 8:30 am in Pr. Becky’s office. Please join the conversation and bring book suggestions for next time!

ST LUKE TREASURER’S REPORT

St. Luke's approved 2019 Budget: $164,310.00

Income as of 8/25/19: $101,026.37 (62% of budget)

Expenses as of 8/25/19: $106,907.62 (65% of budget)

St. Luke currently has four Committees—Congregational Relations, Community

Relations, Property and Spiritual Relations. The Community Relations and

Spiritual Relations Committees meet on the second Monday of each month

beginning at 6:45pm in the Fellowship Hall to meet with Pastor Becky prior to

splitting into individual Committee discussions from 7-8pm. The next Community

and Spiritual Relations meeting night will be Monday, September 9 at 6:45pm.

The Property Committee meets on an as needed basis.

The Congregational Relations Committee will meet on Thursday, September 12 at 1pm in the kitchen.

Congregational Relations will now meet on the second Thursday of each month.

If you are not already on a Committee, please prayerfully consider joining one and contributing to the

fellowship, outreach and worship practices of your St. Luke family.

Our next Ministry Planning meeting will be Sunday, September 8th

brainstorm new ideas and discuss the needs of the community and congregation.

Mutual Ministry - The Mutual Ministry Committee Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, September 15th at 6:30 pm in Pr. Becky’s office.

STEEPLE PROJECT The steeple work is complete and it looks fantastic! Please continue to contribute to the cost of this project as you are able. The congregation did take a private loan of $30,000 to cover the costs of the necessary renovation. As of August 25, 2019 we have raised a total of $93,944.26 toward the final cost of $110,804.32, this number does not include interest we will accrue on the loan. Thank you for your help!

Most of us can remember a time when we could answer “Yes” to one or more of these

questions, and some of us can even answer “Yes” to them today.

If this sounds like you, please join the Allegheny Synodical Women’s Organization for a

Day of Renewal. This year’s theme is “Refresh, Relax, Recharge,” and will be held

Saturday, September 28, 2019 from 9:00am to approximately 3:00pm, at the Altoona

Grand Hotel, Plank Road in Altoona.

Scheduled sessions will include four breakout sessions with activities to challenge you to

renew your body, mind, and spirit and may include massage, crafts, exercise, make up, and

fashion. Our keynote speaker is Pastor Susan Winger speaking on Spiritual Refreshment.

Join us for a day of fellowship and fun, and reenergize your body, mind, and spiritual life.

The registration fee is $8.00 and the registration forms are now available in the narthex.

The Deadline to register is September 7th.

School Kits—There is a donation bin located in the narthex for anyone who would like to donate school supplies for Lutheran World Relief Backpacks. We are hoping to gather supplies to fill 40 bags. For the bags, we are only in need of 70 page notebooks (4 per bag), blunt tipped scissors (1 per bag) and unsharpened #2 pencils with an eraser (5 per bag). Vanco GivePlus† Update– Most of our congregation’s designated giving areas have been added to our online offering service at Vanco. You can access this service through our web site by clicking the top right button labeled “DONATE”. You can also give through Vanco’s mobile app. See https://youtu.be/PAjqUxK8YRk for instructions on acquiring this app. If you have created your Online Profile and subsequently log in to the giving web page, you will need to click on the “Add Transaction” button to see the full fund list. Note that I can add additional giving area’s to the list as needed. There may be a small delay of about one business day for a new area to activate. Why use an online offering service? Here are some of my thoughts:

If you’re like me, I tend to be a bit forgetful. When I think of my offering, the envelopes are

usually where I’m not. But my cell phone is almost always nearby to make an online donation.

Sometimes we find ourselves “under the weather” either figuratively or literally during a bad

snow storm. With online giving we can still maintain our regular giving.

With our grown kids living further and further away, travel is usually a necessity for us as

parents. With a computer or smartphone always nearby, it’s easy to fulfill our weekly offering

obligation to St. Luke.

Speaking of travel, our jobs can sometimes take us away from Centre County for weeks or

months at a time. (I once spent a year in the Seattle area for my job.) Again, an online giving

service can maintain our regular offering.

Sometimes, I like to put things on autopilot. The Vanco service has a recurring giving option

that you can set up and let it run. You can stop or modify your choice at any time.

At times our personal church attendance can be somewhat sporadic possibly due to work

schedules. Although it’s no substitute for regular attendance, regular online giving can keep

one part of our faith life going.

Barb Streed, Youth and Leaders from the First Faith Lutheran Church Mission Group in Dodge Center, Minnesota. They stayed at St. Luke on July 27th and were able to join us for the 8am service on Sunday, July 28th.
