On June 23, the residents of the St. George gathered once more in the foyer of the condominium to cele-brate the beginning of summer. Indeed the “Summer Party” was a great success. Food and drink were plentiful. Responding to the Social Committee’s indi-vidual invitation, a number of new residents came to meet their neighbours.

All residents, off site owners and the individual com-mercial agencies of the St. George had been invited as usual.

The President brought greetings and a vote of appreciation for the committee members’ hard work for this occasion. Pat Hurley led the team while Gilles Latrémouille did his best as our “trusted bartender”. The “door” prize was won by Mr. Lionel Kirby.

The next event will take place with a tree decoration session at the end of November followed by the Christmas party, early in December.

We encourage everyone to join in and make the St. George a great community.

Dr. Marie des Anges Loyer, one of our residents and

frequent volunteer, has been awarded the

prestigious R.D. DeFries Award by the Canadian

Public Health Association at a ceremony in Toronto.

This honour is awarded annually in the form of a

medal and citation for outstanding contributions in

the field of public health.

Dr. Loyer has an extensive list of professional

achievements: a BSN from Ottawa University, a

Masters degree in Public Health from Columbia University, a Masters and

PhD from the Faculty of Education, University

of Ottawa, and has completed post doctoral studies at the University of St. Louis, Missouri.

HAVE YOU TRIED OUR NEW BARBECUE?

Pictured here are Lorne Richardson and Storm MacGregor testing our new Webber Stainless Steel barbeque. Thanks to both of them for re-searching the best models and prices and for assembling the selected unit (with no bolts or washers left over!).

The old barbeque, which is showing some wear, has been retained as a backup for those occasions when more than one chef wants to demonstrate his or her culinary prowess at the same time.

In the spirit of mutual enjoyment of our common facilities please observe the following rules:

Before use: You must book a time with Security

After use: Clean the BBQ and turn

KINDNESS METERS HELPING TO MOVE HOMELESS

by Gordon Diamond

You may have noticed the orange Kindness Meters around the Market and might

have wondered where the donated money goes. The St. George is a member of

the Downtown Ottawa Coalition for a Safe Community, which partners with the City

of Ottawa to collect the money people give to the Kindness Meters instead of to

panhandlers.

The Coalition then pays for the moving expenses of shelter clients when they move

into their own apartments across the city, providing a much more stable environ-

ment and hope for a better life. We get a double bang for our buck by paying

Rideau Street Youth Enterprises to do the moves. Your condominium is engaged in

the community and making a difference.

BUCK NAKED BIKERS IN THE BYWARD EXPOSED

On Saturday 12 June at about 3:10 pm, if you who were out and about the Mar-ket, you could not have helped butt no-

tice a parade of naked bicyclers

flashing by in the altogether. It turns out this has become an annual event and as you can see from the two expo-sures which we could print, an activity open to all shapes and sizes. Life is nev-er dull in the ByWard Market!

CPR / AED ANNUAL RECERTIFICATION TRAINING by Gord Diamond

On June, 21 resident and staff volunteers underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR / AED) re-fresher training conducted by the Professional Paramedics of Ottawa. Four others have either qualified at work or will take the courses offered elsewhere in the City.

If you have a medical emergency, be sure to unlock your door, call 911 and St. George Se-curity. The latter will PA these volunteer emer-gency medical responders to come to your as-sistance. And the paramedics are stationed only minutes away in the market area.

THANK YOU ST. GEORGE RESIDENTS

THE SPRING USED CLOTHING DRIVE BIGGER &

BETTER THAN LAST YEAR

This year’s Spring Used Clothing and Household Goods Drive was an unqualified success.

Thanks to the many residents who contributed 100 bags of items weighing some 800 pounds that were picked up by the Ca-nadian Diabetes Association. They sell these to Value Village to fund their many programs.

Welcome back to a new Market Season! Ambassadors are now patrolling the market, providing assistance to visitors and vendors. Markets Management staff would like to take this opportunity to remind residents that if you have any concerns, please inform one of our staff.

Markets Management staff looks forward to serving you throughout the 2010 Market Season.

King Edward Task Force Needs Volunteers by Bill Campbell

Help the community reclaim King Edward Avenue from the dangerous trucks that have been an eyesore for decades. So far the King Edward Task Force has stopped STO buses from idling on our streets, got speed limits lowered, helped to put an air quality monitor at the Andrew Fleck Child Care, represented our community on the interprovincial bridge study to get the trucks out of the downtown core, and engaged public and elected officials with vigils, demonstrations, letters and media stories to get its message across.

The King Edward Task Force is led by Marc Aubin at 613-290-6593, e-mail [email protected]. The Task Force website is www.kingedwardavenue.com . Marc is looking for help from people with energy and skills to work on activities such as special projects, writing letters, taking photos, fundraising, organizing meetings, rallies and events, and contributing their ideas.

It is an election year and it is important to attract attention and help from the politicians. If you want to help make a difference in our community get in touch with Marc to see how you can help. If you don’t have time to get involved then ask Marc to include you on his e -mail dis-tribution list to stay abreast of the latest news and issues.
