THE SQUARE OF KING MILAN, NIS TRANSFORMATION

OF THE CENTRAL URBAN CORE

The strong impact of an intensive modernization of the urban areas, reflected in a pro-gressive transformation of the architectural heritage and the central urban cores, is evi-dent in most places that like city of Nis passed through transition periods of XX century.

Short-term economic benefit, often opponent to the sustainable development policyhas influenced to their modification. Planning and uncontrolled interventions, always de-termined by various limiting factors, as well as uncontrolled interaction of numerous ac-tors with protected heritage, have effected to the degradation degree and transformationof cultural-historic sites.

The objective of this paper is perception of the Square of King Milan in Nis, not onlythrough the evaluation of the architectural elements and manifold transformed urbanarea, but also their mutual relations within the unbreakable ties that create with otherculturalgoods in the region.

Systematization of the technical, written and photo documentation from different pe-riod of times and determination of the real state of this area, has provided the detailedcomparative analysis of what the urban core used to present and what is presenting now.

Identification of the specific factors and the detection of positive and negative exam-ples and phenomena were necessary prerequisite for definition of the operative goals ofthe integrative protection of this area, and the recommendations for achieving them we-re determined in the way to be compatible with the strategy of sustainable urban deve-lopment.
