Millburn Congregational United Church of Christ MESSENGER
July 2020
Our fathers of old built this land on the leading of God's Holy Hand.
Each great statesman lived his own life, Proudly putting his God first in that life.
This country, so beautiful, full of pride shows it in the colors of her flag as it flies.
We see the lovely blue, that for us, does show, the great expense of God's heaven above.
Both flag and sky carry the shining stars; Each star showing the beauty of God's love.
The red, so bright, in the stripes gives the color of the blood first given by Jesus,
and then lost in the many wars of man; So each American could have so many freedoms.
The white shows first the purity of our God's love;
That we see in each heart that looks to Him above.
In all of America, the greatest earthly spirit is seen, in the emblem of the strong and soaring eagle.
He shows that each heart that loves God lives free.
We are free to learn from all our history; When we learn of our many great statesmen,
Who were men of true Christian conviction.
They knew their God-given duty was to live by their Christian values.
Does each one elected, today, know that he or she
Was elected to carry those convictions for all America?

Pastor Phil’s Message
This is a pregnant moment. Something is being born. All birthing is painful and messy but new life emerges and it is this new life that makes the pain and the mess worth it. Global pandemic. The numbers are still rising even as we are growing tired of it. We so want to get back to normal, to be together and for things to be “like they were.” When this all started we couldn’t even begin to imagine 112,000 deaths. (This is the June 12 count. By the time you are reading this it will be a different number) We were busy being panicked by a few hundred deaths. Much has been learned and we are finding ways of getting back to business and fun and at the same time respecting each other enough not to put the other in danger. We have learned that we are connected globally in ways not really imagined before. Someone’s sickness in a far off place can be directly connected to us and we have a vested interest in their well be-ing. Civil unrest. Marches. Protests. Fires. Looting. Photo ops. Wrestling with what has been called America’s original sin. This time it feels different. This time it feels like a broader move-ment. The NFL making a statement that would have been unimaginable even a year ago. NAS-CAR banning the Confederate Flag at its races. Drew Brees retracting, learning and apologiz-ing. The recognition by senior military officials that there is something odd about naming our military bases for Confederate Generals and leaders. This time people seem more willing to do the mental surgery necessary to allow that protestors are a different group than agitators and looters and organized crime groups. This time people are interested in having discussions about how we got here, slavery, Jim Crow laws, and mass incarceration and are yearning for a better future. These conversations and painful and messy but something is being born. We are on the edge of history in our own church. The Search Committee will soon present their candidate. A new chapter in the life of Millburn Congregational UCC will start to be lived! Stay connected. Stay plugged in. Stay curious. Be present to history and history will reach into, “God’s will on earth as it is in heaven.” Blessings, Pastor Phil

Admin Committee Update Thank you to everyone that helped weed, plant the flowers, take down broken fence and fill the trench in. Clean up in general the church grounds. The mulch didn't arrive to spread when we put the flowers in. Let me know when you can help with that and I will schedule the mulch delivery. Thank you to Laura Dragin for watering the flowers! The leak in the walkway between the 2 buildings is being repaired and we have signed a contract to have the exterior trim of
the church repaired and painted. We also have a committee working on signage around the church. Margie Petroff Admin Chair
As of right now, we are planning our Fall Rummage Sale for October 2nd and 3rd. Due to the uncertainty of the pandemic, this could change as we move forward! We are now accepting donations but with the Church still closed please call the office (847.356.5237) to set up a drop-off time. Please place your items (preferably boxed) in the marked storage room at the west end of Lauren Hall. We will be accepting donations now through September 27. We will be ac-cepting ONLY furniture the week of the sale! Your Rummage Sale Team Lynnette Bratzke Barb Coon Char Myers Margo Paramski Sarah Storaasli Ruthie Young

July Birthdays
MYLO
At our May 26th meeting, via Zoom, Sue Heinlein thanked all that made masks for the church. We made 140 adult and 12 child masks.
Due to the rising cost of the These Days maga-zine, we have decided to stop providing the magazine to the church. We have paid for it through the end of 2020. Because of Covid-19 no one is able to go to the church to pick up a copy so we asked Laura if she could please mail to anyone who wants a copy. People just need to call or email Laura. As an alternative, the UCC does have daily devotions on their website that people can access.
We will be on vacation in June and July. We
will have a short meeting on August 25th, via
Zoom, to decide what we will be doing at our
September meeting.
