Wednesday Night Fellowship by Roy StaufferMy grandfather, who was the

minister of First Christian Church in Atlanta, always felt that Wednesday night Fellowship Suppers were the heart of the churchs fellowship. I have always agreed with that. From the time I was a small boy up until now I have always appreciated Wednesday night dinners as providing one of the

greatest opportunities to make new friends and deepen Christian fellowship. Maybe it should be no surprise that a Fellowship Hall in Atlanta carries the Stauffer name, as does a Fellowship Hall in Memphis.

I wish more Woodmont members would discover the joy of Wednesday Night Fellowship Dinners, or what we now call Five Star Dinners (from September - May). This summer, during June and July, the nature of Wednesday evenings shifts a bit to a time of Gospel singing followed by a potluck supper. Two weeks ago our attendance almost tripled at supper (from about 60 to 169 people) when Joe Badawy prepared a delicious Egyptian meal for us. Everyone loved it from the hand-wrapped and stuffed grape leaves to the made-from-scratch baklava for dessert. Joe will be cooking a special meal for us again on July 8. So dont miss out on this unique activity.

As we enjoy the summer change of pace, we are also planning for the upcoming fall series of Wednesday Night Fellowship Dinners and Classes. We hope to offer classes that speak to issues that confront our lives and society today. Classes begin September 16 with two options:

1. The three week series Clay leads of Seeking, Sharing, & Serving (especially for new members, and other members who havent taken them).

2. A series of classes I announced earlier on Retirement, including everything having to do with retirement except finances (which is the only thing every book and article on retirement deals with). We will deal with issues like: When to retire? What will my new lifestyle, meaning and purpose be like? How will I spend my time? How to re-create yourself when you retire, and much more.

In late September and early October, Day Star Ministries will offer another series of classes on Parenting.

In October there will be two new classes offered on Wednesday evenings:

1. How well is our prison system working today? 2. Sex-trafficking (yes, including here in Nashville).In November we hope to get to know Rev. Bob Coleman,

newly appointed Executive Director of the organization Community Care Fellowship, and we will learn what that ministry is all about.

Another series of DivorceCare classes will be offered again this Fall, and were still working on hopefully offering a class in August or September on Social Security and Medicare and all our questions about it. Keep your eyes on The Spire newsletter, inSpire e-news and/or Woodmonts website for that specific time.

Christian Fellowship is one of the four main purposes of the Church, any and every Church. How deep is your fellowship, and what are you doing to increase the Fellowship blessing? - Roy

Being a Christian Leader by Dr. Clay StaufferThis Sunday June 28th, we will install

our new leaders at the 11:00 a.m. worship service one Treasurer (L.A. Galyon), three Board Members at Large (Sarah Drury, Isse Waddey, Dana Reynolds), six Elders (Anne-Marie Farmer, Marcella Derryberry, Faye Tevebaugh, Mark Drury, John Hobby, and Fran Stewart), as well as 30 new Deacons. Leadership is absolutely essential in any congregation,

and Woodmont has been blessed with a history of strong lay leadership. It is always my prayer that those who are elected to church leadership will take the role seriously and understand the spiritual nature involved. Recently, I came across a list of Twenty Characteristics of a Christ-like Leader by Paul Chappell. I find this list both accurate and challenging. A Christ-like leader is:

1) A follower of Jesus Christ 2) Willing to deny self 3) Open to and filled with the Holy Spirit of God 4) Possesses and practices discipline in their life. 5) Reads the Word of God and other good books consistently 6) Seeks, asks for, and uses Gods wisdom 7) Is sincere and deeply cares 8) Has Godly friends and stays accountable 9) Knows how to forgive 10) Finds acceptance in Christ 11) Prays regularly for others 12) Helps others succeed 13) Knows

the difference between ambition and vision 14) Is able to articulate vision 15) Possesses a sense of urgency for Gods work 16) Stands on strong convictions 17) Is kind 18) Has a growing love for Jesus Christ 19) Loves their family 20) Loves the local church.

Christian leadership is grounded in service and humility, patterned after the life and teachings of Jesus. In his book In the Name of Jesus: Reflections on Christian Leadership, Henri Nouwen says: In our world of loneliness and despair, there is an enormous need for men and women who know the heart of God, a heart that forgives, cares, reaches out, and wants to heal. In that heart, there is no suspicion, no vindictiveness, no resentment, and not a tinge of hatred. It is a heart that wants only to give love and receive love in response. It is a heart that suffers immensely because it sees the magnitude of human pain and the great resistance to trusting the heart of God who wants to offer consolation and hope. Nouwen says it so well! Please join me in praying for and supporting all leaders of Woodmont Christian Church!

Spotlight On Living Generously, Changing Lives - Guatemala by Sara deBettencourtWoodmonts outreach ministry serving individuals and

families in Guatemala includes mission trips, fundraising and sponsorships of individuals by WCC families. WCC youth member Ellen Thomas (daughter of members Emmie and Jim Thomas) took an interest in Guatemala back in 2007. Since then, the youth group has been there three times and the first ever adult trip happened in 2014. In order to make this happen, Woodmont partners with an organization called Unbound with whom Trey Flowers and Emmie and Jim Thomas work closely. Together, Woodmont and Unbound, (as described on Unbounds website on the Who We Are page), are inspiring confidence and offering opportunity and encouragement to children and families living on the margins of society. We are creating practical and trustworthy means for people to help others and nurture human connections that uplift us all. Emmie recently explained, Woodmont families have sponsored 139 families in Guatemala and funded homes for 18 families. Words cannot measure the significance of creating these relationships that provide help and hope and love to families...with the goal of breaking the cycle of poverty through access to education and jobs.

Woodmonts Youth Group led the way in terms of mission trips to Guatemala in 2008. They traveled for the third time to Guatemala in 2014 (pictured on the right) including 19 youth and 5 adults. Every year they raise funds through the Pumpkin Patch (annual pumpkin sale fundraiser on South Halls front lawn) to send the youth to Guatemala. Over the past three years, the Pumpkin Patch has raised more than $19,000 to help fund youth mission trips. Our mission trip to Guatemala opened my eyes to the advantages I have, said Ashley Buchanan, who went on the 2014 trip. I thought about what we could do to give back in some small way. Giving any of your gifts to others is a great way to help people, and Unbound gave us an amazing opportunity to help families in Guatemala. When the youth group came back, they launched the Guats Up and Flocking Flamingo fundraiser. Each of the youth pledged to raise at least $100, which the church would match, to raise the $4,000 needed to build a new home in Guatemala. The flocking flamingos were one of the ways they planned to raise money. Members of the church could buy flamingo insurance, including the option, for a small donation, to nominate another member to be flocked. Above is a photo of a lawn visited by the youth groups flocking flamingos. Approximately $20,000 was

raised - enough to build five homes! It was so inspiring to see a group of high school students go beyond themselves to see the world through anothers eyes, said Trey Flowers, it was clear the trip had left a remarkable impact on their lives. Through the Guats Up fundraising initiative, they were able to use their gifts and ideas creatively to see that they can make a real difference in someone elses life.

Woodmonts First Adult Mission Trip to Guatemala in 201421 adults from Woodmont traveled to Guatemala for

the first time last November. Woodmonters who traveled to Guatemala and sponsor individuals got to meet them in person and those who did not travel there had the opportunity to send backpacks of items for their sponsored individual via the mission trip group. Tom and Kathy Patten experienced meeting their sponsored child face to face and said, Our sponsored child has written twice about what it meant to him and his family to see us in person. Before the trip and meeting face to face, it was hard to realize the impact it would have on any of us. From his letters we know that he now feels we are real and are back in the U.S. thinking of him with encouragement and hope. We have all been changed as a result of that day in Guatemala!

I had the opportunity to speak with Karen Allemang, Trips Manager for Unbound, about how the organization works to fulfill their mission to walk with the poor and marginalized people of the world, particularly in Guatemala. She explained that the support from Woodmont is one to one support. Each family has different needs. Unbounds office in Guatemala works to make sure that individuals, families and communities are receiving sustainable benefits with dignity and respect. The homes funded through Woodmonts support are also building a legacy for Guatemalan families - something that will be handed down from generation to generation - a home that is safe and built from Woodmonts outpouring of love and generosity. Karen also explained that when Woodmonts mission trips visit communities and families, the impact is enormous. The families remember every high five, every hug, smile, and interaction they have with Woodmonters. While we go back to our lives in the U.S., the families are cherishing the interactions, the way we listened to them with such intent, and the way we lean in with interest. They especially love to receive letters and pictures from sponsoring families - evidence that there is a person out there that wants to help them and their family and expects nothing in return. To many, this outpouring of unconditional love is overwhelming.

Hymn Choir - A Sound AdventureLast year, during the well-deserved time the Chancel Choir vacates for the summer, we started a choir of volunteers that were eager for an adventure. They were dubbed The Hymn Choir, an ever-evolving mass of singers that love to sing and are willing to risk it all on a Sunday morning! It was a splendid hit for the singers and the congregation, so we are back again this summer- Hymn Choir II - the Sequel! It will st art on July 19 and run through August 9. If you are still reading, let me give you the script...When do we rehearse? Sunday mornings at 10:30 in the choir room.Do I have to read music? No. The anthems will be well-known hymns with which you are familiar.Do I have to wear a robe? No. We will not robe.Will we process? No.Is this user-friendly? Yes, very.Can I miss a week during the four week period? Yes. Two, if you must.Since this is a hymn choir, are hers invited, too? Dear Friends at Woodmont,Due to complications of health, Gays attendance at church and related activities was irregular in recent years, but her love of Woodmont never wavered. It was her home for 48 years as we raised our family, and went through good and hard times; our brothers and sisters in Christ remained constantly at our side. Your love, visits, food, cards, phone calls and prayers were a continual source of strength to both of us and your special outpouring of love in the last weeks of her life were truly evidence of Gods love.
