During this season o Lent leadingup to Easter, were having a class onPrayer every Wednesday night at 6:30p.m. in Room 105. We are discussinghow we understand prayer, how topray, what to expect rom prayer, andother such topics. We will also discussdifferent kinds o praying, like Prayingthe Scriptures, the Serenity Prayer,

Contemplative Prayer or Centering Prayer, the differencebetween prayer and meditation, and so on - class topicsare listed below. Te last night o the class, March 16 (theWednesday beore Palm Sunday and Holy Week), we willlearn about and experience praying the Labyrinth.

What is the Labyrinth? It is a circular design that youcan walk, wandering in various directions until you reachthe center. Te Labyrinth is a spiritual tool designedto connect us with God. Te circular design representsunity and wholeness, which all o us desire or our lives.

As Helen Curry says in her book Te Way o theLabyrinth, It creates a sense o evolution enteringinto time, calling us to awaken to a citizenship in the

universe larger than our aspirations and richer andmore complex than all our dreams. It is a call o the largercycle, the dance o the larger lie. o walk the labyrinthbrings one into exquisite states o renewed awareness, deepened consciousness, and a sense o the Divine. Itencompasses a journey to the center o ones very being.

Tere are three basic parts o the Labyrinth experience:1. Te walk to the center, or walk inward2. Te center itsel; and3. Te journey out againDuring the walk inward, with its many surprising and

disconcerting turns and dead ends, one is invited to release

old patterns o living, worn-out ideas and concepts, andunhappy behaviors. At the centero the labyrinth one iasked to experience the recovery o your very essence, toknow at a very deep level union with the great mystery thais God. It is where you get in touch with the still, smalvoice, the sacred within yoursel. Ten the third part othe labyrinth experience, the most important part, is togoback outrom the center, and prepare to re-enter the worldagain, hopeully with the intention o perorming deep

loving service to the world.Te more you walk the Labyrinth, the more you will ge

in touch with our inner sel and God, and the more youwill eel empowered to do the work your soul is longingor. People walk the Labyrinth in different ways. Somerush right through it, like they do lie, never pausing, asi they want to get it over with as soon as possible. Somestop and pray along the way. Some pause and meditateSome go around twice, or three, or our times. Some taketheir time, as i there is no hurry at all.

Woodmont has two Labyrinths. One is outdoors inthe Haught Memorial Payer Chapel. It is available yeararound. But we also have another Labyrinth that can

be set up inside the church. And it will be set up in theYouth Area or the March 16th Prayer Class. It will stayset up until Easter Sunday. Members are invited andencouraged to walk the Labyrinth especially on MaundyTursday afer our service, Good Friday beore or aferour service, and Saturday o Easter weekend especially asyou participate in the Prayer Vigil. It will be available aall times rom March 16th until Easter.

I youve never walked the Labyrinth beore, I stronglyencourage you to try it. As I said, its another tool to helpstrengthen our spiritual lie.

I dont usually think o Jesus as aguy who wandered a lot. Feed thehungry? Sure. urn the tables? Ocourse. Heal the sick? Absolutely. Butwandering I just cant picture it. Mosto the time I find mysel rushing lateto this or that meeting, speed walkingwith purpose to get where Im going.

But even i I had the time, the thoughto wandering around just doesnt sound that appealingto me. So in this age o global positioning satellites, perhaps you are like me struggling to remember thelast time you wandered. But then without ail theseason o Lent has come upon us once again, and Luke4 has something to say to our busy impulses: the God omystery shows up in the strangest places the ones we dontusually find ourselves in without a little bit o wandering.Jesus spends 40 days in the wilderness, wrestling with hisministry and who God is calling him to be. His season oquiet wandering (the being) equips Jesus or everythingelse he does in his ministry (the doing). Te basis or

Lent, then wandering in the wilderness reminds usthat being-without-doing is inadequate but also thatdoing-without-beingis insufficient.

Surely the skeptics who thought it odd that Jesusdisappeared or 40 days were the same ones whoincredulously asked why he wandered over to the homeo a tax collector and why he needed to wander off intothe dangerous terrain o a leper colony. I suppose he hadno more business wandering into any o those places thenhe had telling us that we ought to love our neighbor asourselves but then again, he is the one we call Lord.Yet the world constantly reinorces our own need to bein control o our own destiny and thus to ear a little bit

o wandering off the spiritual path. As olkien wrote, though, not all who wander are lost.

Te Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis once had a dreamthat reminds us o the importance o wandering and othe ways that the world tries to train it out o us:

One day, a mother brought her son to the priest andbegged or the old man to help her son. My boy hastoo many questions about God, she said. All o theneighbors are astonished at the things he says about ourFather in Heaven (these crazy dreams) and I just dont

know what to do. Te old priest knew exactly what do,though, so he took the boy aside and told the young manthat he was willing to help him out. Whats the matter?,asked the priest. I dont know, says the boy. I seemto roam the streets just wandering... and wrestling.Te priest responds, quizzically, with whom are youwrestling? Te boy quickly replied back With God, ocourse. Who else would you wrestle with?Te priest became disheartened, but went at work tomake that boy get rid o his tendencies to speak out andto wrestle with God. So he took the boy to his house andtaught him carpentry. And theyd have long talks aboutGod, and the priest explained to the boy over and over

again that God is not someone to be wrestled with... thatGod does not need us to wander, that God is just theperson in heaven who needs us to stay inside the lines.Afer a month or so o these conversations, the boy icured and goes home to his mother, Mary. Many yearlater the priest hears about the boy and all o the greatthings he had built out o wood. And it turns out thatthanks to the priests teachings, the boy had grown up tobecome the best carpenter in all o Nazareth.Instead o dreaming about the kingdom o God and

growing up to save the world the boy had been trainedto be the best carpenter in all o Nazareth.

Perhaps a little bit o wandering would do us all good.- rey

I am a list maker. I have been makinglittle lists or as long as I can remember:Lists o things I like and things I dont;lists o dreams or the uture; lists othings to try and places to go. On mydaily to do lists, I draw little boxes sothat I can check them off. Sometimes, iI do something not on the list, Ill add itin just so I get the joy o checking off the

box, and the momentary swell o pride at being productive.Tis is neurotic behavior, certainly-- and on some level, many o us engage in it. Its hard to live in the moment; to gowith the flow. For Western thinkers in particular, its a realchallenge! I like making lists because I like making plans.I like to eel that Im in control o making my lie the way Ithink it should be, and that with enough planning, thingswill pan out perectly-- but really, this delicious eeling is adelusion. I read recently that happy people plan actions, butthey dont plan results.

Tis is exactly where I get mysel into trouble. I tend tothink that i I work hard enough, and plan diligently enough,I get to count on the results, but it doesnt usually work likethat. Ive written here in the Spire beore about the challengesweve had with starting a amily, and youd think with allthe setbacks weve experienced that I would have learnedthis lesson well. Ive been in planning-addict overload modehere these last ew months o my pregnancy, and rankly,Ive been enjoying it: o do beore Maternity Leave, BabyGear to Order, Parenting Books to Read, and on and on.I invested heavily in one particular natural birth method, attending classes, reading endless articles, and dog-earringpages in books... and then, with an ultrasound three weeksbeore our due date, we learned this birth method wouldntwork or us, since our baby is breech. urns out, our babysplans or her arrival conflicted with mine.

Tis threw me off course in a big way. Te new plan is or ascheduled C-section, two weeks early. I elt as i I had trainedor months or a marathon, and didnt qualiy at the verylast minute. I ound mysel eeling incredibly anxious andaraid. I hadnt expected surgery, or the recovery that comeswith it. I hadnt expected to need extra help at home. I hadno lists or this new plan, and I only have a ew days to getsome new planning together! In my worrying, Matthew 6:34showed up again in my mind, just like a riend who kind o

rustrates you, because he is always right: So do not worryabout tomorrow, or tomorrow will bring worries o its ownodays trouble is enough or today.

Tis week, our riend rom Te Bridge, Leah Steltenpohlsnapped this photo o us, recreating a moment rom ouwedding about 6 years ago.

Looking at these two images side by side, I can rememberdozens o times things didnt go as planned or us as a coupleand not only have we survived, but we have grown a lothrough these experiences. Trough this season o changeIve been thankul, and taken great comort and courage inthe ways our community has supported us with love andprayer, casseroles and cards! Tank you or ministering tous! Tese sweet actions have helped me to eel Gods presencpalpably, and remind me to adjust my ocus-- o breathein, let go, and trust Gods steadast presence alongside me

No matter what plans Ive made or what plans all apartmy aith embraces the sense that God is constant, aithuand true. rusting God means opening mysel ully to thisunderstanding and leaning into it with all Ive got. By thitime next week, we are excited and hopeul that there wilbe a new little person living in our house. From what wevebeen told, the only thing we can actually plan on or sure ithat we wont be getting much sleep or a while.

Have you ever wondered what would happen i all God'speople sat in total silence or at least ten minutes a day?

What would God tell us?What would our stress level be?Tis year's Lenten devotional is one that you will read on

your computer or perhaps on the run on your phone mixedin a sea o other urgent or meaningless e-mail messages. Tisholy period leading to Easter needs to change us in somesmall or mighty way. Will we be the exact same person in 40days? God would still love us, but do we want to stay exactlyas we are now?

In the aith leader program, I chose to practice ten minuteso total silence NO in my car, NO on the run, NO evenreading my devotional, but away rom everything-just Godand me. I set a timer on my cell phone and the first time I didit, I was amazed at how cluttered my mind was and how longten minutes elt. I kept singing the phrase "Spirit o the LivingGod, all aresh on me" until I was calm and settled. I chosethe nighttime afer whatever day I had experienced to be my

period o quiet. People I needed to pray or came to miMy lie's purpose became clearer. My worries became lconsuming. I realized that the noise, the technology, the raand the sense o endless obligation build a ortress arouus so that we cannot be honest, alone, quiet, and vulnerabeore God. Perhaps this ortress o distraction makes us sae and yet ultimately empty.

"On my bed I remember you. I think o you through twatches o the night. Because you are my help, I sing in

shadow o your wings. My soul clings to you, Your right haupholds me."

Can we be still ten minutes a day or 40 days?

Dear Lord,Empty us o the distractions o the world. Fill us with Yo

spirit and a hunger to serve You. Change us in these 40 daysthat we can become the people You have called us to be.

In Your precious name we pray, Amen.

A Note rom Justin Gung...Dear Woodmont,

Recently, on a Monday afernoon, I put my head on mdesk in disappointment. Why? Because Maddison Grigsbhad just inormed me that she is moving to Dallas, exas.

For the past nine months, Maddison has worked aChildren's Ministry Coordinator. She has led ChildrenChurch, overseen Junior Youth Fellowship, and providecover or Sunday School teachers. She has led the ChildrenMoment on Sunday morning, planned special events like th

Father-Daughter* Dance, and given essential administrativsupport to me.

But, in January, a company in Dallas recruited Maddisoto work in its marketing department. Given that Dallas is thcity where most o her amily plans to relocate, the choice waclear.

Providentially, at the same time that this was happeninClay Stauffer and several other Woodmont pareninterviewed Ceron Warfield to be Children's Ministry InternCeron (pronounced "Suh-ron") is a ull-time elementarschool teacher in Metro Nashville. He has a degree ielementary educationand carries the "HighlyQualified eaching Status"or all subject areas K-6.He is credentialed in theMontessori educationalphilosophy. He coachesootball, basketball, and swimming, but hisstrongest qualification ishis living aith in JesusChrist.

Ceron is not a direct replacement or Maddison. Actuallwe are working to find a suitable replacement or her. Tanyou or your prayers and active help in the ministry durinthe interim.

We hope that you will join us at a reception in honoo Maddison on Sunday, March 13, at 10:30 a.m. in thGathering Hall. We also hope that you will warmly welcomCeron and his wie, Jocelyn, to Woodmont.
