NOVEMBER 1992GREETINGS FROM WHEELING

Here in Chicagoland, the temperature hasdipped below freezing a few times, I'm up to myankles in leaves, and I'm driving home in thedark. That must mean it's DX season again!

I wish I could regale you with stories of myfantastic catches on the bands, but between awicked electrical storm and homecorningweekat the high school, I haven't listened muchlately. Now it's late Sunday night and I'vegotta put this all together in one evening and

send it off to Eddie before tomorrow afternoon. But that's okay, because I fully intend to hearRadio St. Helena on Friday for my logging ofthe year. I wish all of you luck as you gohunting for it along with every other DXer onseveral continents! I hope to see all of yournames in Paul Wakefield's Africa column nexttime!

Lots of fun news this time from all over, solet's get on with it . . .

WEWN TO HIT THE AIRWAVES BY YEAR'S ENDfrom the Monitoring Times Convention via Mike Schulsinger

As an adjunct to its successful nationwidecable TV ministry, the Eternal Word TelevisionNetwork now prepares to reach the mostremote corners of the world via shortwaveradio. EWTN, broadcasting 24 hours a day.reaches some 30 million homes on 960 cablesystems. This latest venture expands thisalready miraculous achievement into aworldwide radio service called WEWN. "Mydream and desire is to feed the people of Godby being a vehicle of evangelization for theChurch," says Mother M. Angelica, chairmanof EWTN and WEWN.

WEWN launches December 28, 1992,providing the same spiritual growth, Catholic -oriented programming so popular on E'WTN,and will transmit programs in over 20languages. "We will begin with a partialbraodcast schedule, and by March 1993, wewill be at a full broadcast schedule of 21 hoursa day," says Matt Scalici, Vice President ofEngineering.

The programming is broadcast from a siteabout 15 miles from Birmingham. Alabamausing four Continental Electronics 500 kWtransmitters. WEWN signals target NorthAmerica, South America, East and WestEurope, Africa and Australia. Programming

includes, but is not limited to, Scripturereadings, traditional prayers, The Rosary, anddevotionals. The North America programmingwill also feature popular series and specialsseen on EWTN. WEWN's programs areproduced in Rome, Italy and at EWTN'scorporate headquarters in Birmingham.

Besides this press release, Mike sent alongWEWPTs slick looking frequency schedule for12/28/92 to 3/28/93. It shows broadcasts inEnglish, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, French,Mandarin, Russian, Czech, Slovak,Byelorussian. Croatian, Serbian. Albanian,German, Dutch. Polish, Romanian. Ukrainian,Bulgarian, Lithuanian and Hungarian. Therewill be four separate programs broadcastsimultaneously from 1300-1000 UTC. Watchfor English to North America from 0000-0600and 0700-0800 on 7540 kHz. 0800-1000 and1300-1600 on 9870 kHz, and 1700-2300 on13615 kHz. They also have some out of bandfrequencies such as 9350. 9985 and 5825 kHzin the works as well as 18930 kHz in the new19 MHz band.

It seems to me that this will greatly enhancethe Vatican's radio presence in the Americasas well as Asia. Best of luck to them in theirnew endeavors!

THE 1993 PASSPORT TO WORLD BAND RADIOI recently decided to buy a copy of the

Passport to World Band Radio or PWBRHaving been a devout WRTH reader for years.I thought !would take a look at the competition.I was quite pleased with what I found!

The New York Times calls the PWBR a nvGuide for world band radios." This is anaccurate description. While the WRTH is aindispensable reference listing every stationand every frequency in the entire world, thePWBR highlights in greater detail theprogramming it is possible to receive onshortwave. This is great for the novice, butthere is also plenty of interest to the seasonedvet.

The book begins with its picks for the topten shows on the bands beginning with RadioMoscow's "Folk Box." It then goes into detailon the twenty or so easiest stations to find onthe bands from all over. Equipment reviewshighlight the Philips DC777 shortwave carradio and world time clocks as well as over 60portable and tabletop receivers. The reviewsare more complete than the WRTH and includethose listed as "Editor's Choice" in each pricerange-sort of a Consumer's Reports guide toworld band radios.

In the actual station info section, there isan hour -by -hour guide to the most interestingprograms with descriptions, times andfrequencies. Then there is a listing of Englishbroadcasts as well as "Voices from Home,"which details transmissions in a country'snative tongue aimed at compatriots abroad.

The "Addresses PLUS" sections goes beyondthe WRTH's "V by QSL. Rp." by listing severaladdresses, contact people, idiosyncracies andfree stuff from each station.

"The Blue Pages" are a unique way to IDsignals heard on the bands. For eachfrequency, a horizontal bar graph is givenshowing each station on a time chart. Forexample, there are 11 stations on 6085 kHz.This much can be determined from the WRTH.However, the PWBR allows you to determinewhich station is broadcasting when, in whatlanguage, with how much power and to whatregion. Therefore, you can tell that if you hearGerman at 0500. it's most likely DW viaCanada. but if you wait until an hour later, you might catch Bayerischer Rundfunk. Thisformat is great for exploring the bands onechannel at a time. Like the WRTH. there aremany CIS transmitter sites listed, but howlong these will be current is anyone's guess.

Now you might ask, will I still buy aWRTH? Yes, because its country -by -countrylisting is much more comprehensive, providingcomplete schedules from the tiniestVietnamese regional to the megapowers. ThePWBR is more slickly produced with many fullcolor pages. but the two actually act ascomplementary volumes. both containinguseful but different information. If you havean extra $16.95 lying around, I suggest youget the PWBR now and save your pennies forthe 1993 WRTH which we should see inJanuary. You'll be glad to own them both!

KOKU - 100.3 FM - NO. 1 IN GUAMfrom Billboard Magazine. 10/10/92 via Peggy Thompson

"Jarrimin' three islands, 19 villages, fivebases, and a few brothers in Saipan, this is HitRadio 100!" If you hear this ID, you must belistening to KOKU. the number one station forover eight years in Agana, Guam. At first, itsounds similar to its mainland counterparts, giving away concert tickets and cash andpromoting in -office listening with its top 40format and syndicated countdown shows. However, they are broadcasting from theextreme Western Pacific in a time zone 15hours ahead of New York. This means nothaving to deal with Arbitron or record reps, but it also means getting very little servicefrom record labels and extra hassles working

with stateside suppliers.KOKU's 2.5 kw transmitter and 190 -foot

mountaintop antenna tower broadcast thesignal from the capital of Agana (pop. 180) toa potential audience of 130.000 Korean.Filipino, Micronesian. Salanesian andAmerican listeners. While their programmingis in English, they include some local music inthe native language of Chammorro and attemptto support the island artists as much aspossible. KOKU was also involved in reliefefforts after Typhoon Omar. Future plansinclude building another station in Saipan inthe coming year to increase coverage.

Thanks for the article. Peggy!

ALL NAVAJO RADIO - KNDN 960 AMfrom the Chicago Tribune, 9/29/92

"This just in: Dorothy Benally of Beclabitoneeds a reliable sheepherder. He must bewilling to take the flock up into the mountainsfor at least two months? If you hear thisannouncement, you must be tuned into KNDN,Farmington, New Mexico, the only Navajostation in the U.S. Their 5 kw signal reaches85% of the 160,000 residents of the reservation. They broadcast a mix of C&W, squaw dancechants and the occasional Phil Collins tune.Among the music is news, gossip, and the freemessage board where Navajos cancommunicate information about meetings.funerals and want ads. For these people.KNDN is a conduit to the outside world.bringing word of crisis and calamity-just assoon as an announcer can translate a newsbulletin into their native language.

The station is managed by founder JimGober, an Anglo who developed the format in1977. The only phrase he can speak in Navajois 1 don't speak the People's language." atongue that is so difficult to master that it was

used to code mec.cages in WWII and was nevercracked by the Japanese. Many technologicalterms don't exist in Navajo, so radio becomes"air that speaks" and pickup truck is "metalwith a tail."

All of KNDN's DJs are natives, and theyprovide a very important service to a regionwhere only 10 percent of homes havetelephones and there is no home postal delivery."Dine Speak" is a daily program that allowsthe workers at Navajo Tractor to speak theirminds via a remote hookup, and much of themusic played includes native chants.Listenership is highest among older Navajos, many of whom are uncomfortable speakingEnglish. Many tune in religiously each dayand stop by the studios when they come totown.

This must be fascinating to listen tot In atime when mostAmerican radio is programmedby someone in a high rise office far from theactual audience, it's nice to see a station thatmeans so much to its listeners.

DAK DMR-3000by Steve Evanchuck, OH

My eternal search for the budget SW receiver panacea has led me to theCalifornia import firm of DAK, which has recently unveiled their DMR-3000 direct -entry portable. For $69.90, the radio is chock full ofbells and whistles, some good and some worthless. The worthy onesinclude dual clock display for local and UTC time, sleep timer, lockswitch, and 36 memory presets (18 for SW).

On the critical side, the push buttons are very tiny. Frequency coverageincludes FM broadcast, AM broadcast up to 1610 kHz, and SW bands of 75,60, 49, 41, 31, 25, 19, 16, and 13 meters. Unfortunately, the 21 meterband is omitted entirely. There is no tuning knob, only up -down buttonsto change frequency. The radio has SW1-SW2 buttons, but they don't needto be used when direct frequency entry is punched. The scanning function,as with most SW receivers, is quite useless. The radio is powered byfour AA cells and an optional AC adapter is accepted.

The antenna is a fairly long whip which swivels and rotates, a plusfor this price radio. The radio is insensitive using the built-in whip, which is useful only for the high powered stations.

On the positive side, the radio offers good sensitivity with an externalantenna. The difference was amazing when I plugged in my Eavesdropper. Then, the DMR-3000 actually approached my Sony ICF-2010. However, the75 meter band and also 13 meters are trouble spots in this receiver, withvirtually nothing heard. On 60 meters, Radio Tachira on 4830 came inquite well as did others.

Selectivity is decent, with slop over apparent but not excessive. Some quirks are WWV clearly heard on 4100 kHz (455 kHz IF?) and the diallight comes on when other buttons are held in. Dimensions are about 51by 81 by 2 inches, and workmanship seems satisfactory. In such a smallbundle the speaker is correspondingly tiny and tinny; par for the coursefor a small portable. AM and FM reception seem decent, but I haven'treally tried them out yet. The instruction manual is well written andeven a novice can get the feel of it quickly.

In summary, I cannot recommend the DMR-3000 as a travel portablebecause of the poor performance with its built-in whip, even though thisis somewhat remedied by a clip -on wire. With a good outdoor antennahooked to it, I find this to be a good nightstand radio, probably betterthan anything in its price range. I judge it to be a decent performerand a better value. And of course, DAK has a 30 -day return policy, noquestions asked, if you find it lacking.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This review has been waiting in my file to see what wouldhappen to DAN after they declared chapter 11 bankruptcy. Their customerservice advises the company is functioning normally. They had the DMR-3000 in stock as of Oct. 12; all their policies (return privilege, etc.)continue as before (I know this from recent experience of returning anitem). According to DAK, they do not charge a purchase against a creditcard until the merchandise has been shipped. What you may have readrecently in a national SW magazine was not true, as I understand it.

On another subject, this probably will be the last column in this series.I will accept reviews, but from the past few months I really will besurprised to receive any; the membership interest just isn't there. Mythanks to all of you who did contribute; as you know, we couldn't havedone the column at all without your fine receive reviews.

Last month it was your tip of the iceberg with the alert to you of thenew effort from Tiara Publications --SECRETS OF SUCCESSFUL OSL'ING. Ifyou want that confirming card or piece of paper from Radio Whatamacallitthis 'new and improved' edition could be your key to enhance yourenjoyment of our crazy and wonderful hobby. The price is $12.95US with$2.00 shipping to anywhere this country or $3.00 to any other country.A bargain with all that new and improved information!!

E3107r, there's more from TIARE PUBLICATIONS, Post Office Box 493, LakeGeneva, Wisconsin 53147, (414) 248-4845. Mow about two more NEW booksbefore the close of 1992--

I NS X OE 101,..JR SHORTWAVE RADIO) written by Ted

Benson, WA6BEJ, is publicized as 'a readable book about how yourshortwave radio works - presented in a clear and understandable style'and I would agree. My own technical knowledge of shortwave or any radiois summed up with --if the radio is plugged into the wall socket and theon switch in the correct position, I hear something or I'm in trouble.I actually understood a good portion of this book and if technicalterminology is a hang-up for you, give this book a chance. INSIDE YOURSHORTWAVE RADIO is ninety (90) pages set up by Introduction, Chaptersof --A Typical Super -Heterodyne Receiver, CW and SSB Reception, SpecialReception (which translates into RTTY and FAX), Tuning and Displays,Receiving Enhancements, Accessories, followed by an appendix on Antennaand Ground Connection and another appendix entitled Commonly AskedQuestions. The price is $14.95US, $2.00 additional for shipping ($3.00to an international address) directly from Tiare Publications who acceptcash, VISA and MasterCard. I think the true description is VISA/MasterCard 'welcome' --what an easy way to spend money. It IS a readablebook and its Glossary covers most of what you need to understand towander your way through basic radio.

The other new effort is ASR -WAVES, THE AVIATIONMONITOR'S FlAkINIE3E1C300FC. Yep, this is a specialized bookwhich will be of great interest to some listeners and of no interestwhatsoever to others. The authoress Laura E Ouarantiello is theaviation communications editor for the National Scanning Report and is aqualified pilot. Maybe her writing is over my head but it seems asthough she has hit the major questions involved with VHF/UHF air/aerocommunications. Again, ninety (90) pages of information, frequencies, code prefixes, abbreviations and a pilot/controller glossary for

monitors --more than you might have known would be available for .air

communications. A slightly higher price but more technical information;$17.95US with the same $2.00/$3.00 shipping costs and, as before, theavailability of VISA/MasterCard use. Address and phone number as above.

The only complaint I can give you about these three efforts from Tiareis that they weren't published through the SPEEDX Supermarket --rememberthe other wonderful literary efforts available from the address on ourback cover, CARL HUFFAKER'S LATIN NOTEBOOKS and THE LITERATURE OFSHORTWAVE RADIO.

And now for something from somebody else --1993 calendars from

EDUCATIONAL EXTENSION SYSTEMS, Post Office Box 259, Clarks Summit,

Pennsylvania 18411, 1-800-447-8561 for complete information. Two

different offers, both appear to be wall calendars rather thanappointment books but that 800 number could give all the needed answers. One calendar is entitled 'ETHNIC CULTURES OF AMERICA' and within itsinformation on ethnic groups in the United States, it lists the dates ofcultural and religious holidays. The other calendar, THE 1993 WORLDCALENDAR might hit the spot a bit better --this calendar lists national, civic and religious holidays of over 100 countries. Maybe some of thesedates will coincide with special national broadcasts from the countriesinvolved --better chances for you to pick up ('successfully') that wantedcountry OSL. The price for each is $11.25US plus $3.00 for postage.

Call and ask your questions.

(242 9/19 Fraser -MA)A few months back I asked Bob Fraser,(a monitor for RAI)if the "Dead Lady" was still around? He kindly responded:

She seems to be gone, I haven't heard her in some months.A new younger -sounding lady came on a couple years back and

seems to be one of the main hosts now. I have written themletters, which have yet been unanswered, asking if the U.S.transmissions were live. If so, it would explain why the oldlady would sometimes doze off as it would be 2 a.m. there. No one is awake then except people working (like me). We arethe ones who come into offices late -at -night to wave thatmagic wand about to try to make things right. (Right on, I'veworked it, too! It's tough! BC) It would be a joke on us allif the "Dead Lady" was just a cleaning woman doing the latenight English program for a few extra lire. I always feltsorry for her and hope she is enjoying a retirement somewhereand hadn't died in harness. (Thanks Bob! I hope so, too. This month is interesting. there's a lot of political, sociological

and just plain shortwave listening banter here. Sometimes I think this

column is a perfect benchmark for history and international affairs. The

one I like is the one about the DXing cat. Hank, have you ever found the

2010 next to the litter pan? Boy, would I be peeved. (Cat soccer time!)75,fk#

Bob Fraser received the following letter from R. Moscow answering some questions he asked for

Moscow Mailbag, which he was kind enough to forward to me.

Dear Mr. Fraser,

Unfortunately, our postal service is not working as it should. Many letters get lost. As for renaming ourstation, this is so far only a rumor. Let's wait and see. We have not asked for any refunding for return

postage. It is paid for by the budget. I'm sure we will continue broadcasting for years to come. Thank

you for your good wishes.

Yours,

Joe Adamov (signed)

Well, I didn't have too much space left over. Some loggingsdated in October got held over until next time, so if you don't see aparticular log of yours here, that's probably what happened. I've noticedthat many contributors are putting down more programme details than here-tofore, which, of course, is most welcome. It's always better for me tohave more details, which can be edited down, than to have to work withthe "OM tx in JJ" sort of logging, which is a real bore for both me andthe eventual reader of the column. Thanks for the help, eh?

Back next month, for the last column of the year --already?!

For those of you who might not have heard, China is changing the name of RADIO

BEIJING to CHINA RADIO INTERNATIONAL soon. There are also rumors that RADIO

LUXEMBOURG might be no more soon. As always the only constant is change. Its a

shame that change has to be bad as well as good. On the topic of change, according to the current issue of NASWA's Journal the old USSR's republics havebeen named separate countries. What they don T-Wiention is how they should be

listed. What do you think? Should they be listed as part of the CIS, as European

stations, or what? Your input is sought. If it has already been decided,

please let your ignorant editor know. If you want a copy of the list, let me

know. Also, include a min tamp for return postage. Now for the "goodies" and

until next month
