Working with local employers...

Get Steps Ahead with anApprenticeship

With many young people struggling to findwork in the current economic climate, twoyoung engineers are hoping to secure theirfutures through an Apprenticeship.

Luke Henson, aged 17, and Jack McGinty, 19,have just embarked on Apprenticeships at Jenksand Cattell Engineering, in Wednesfield.

The pair, who combine their work with studyingat City of Wolverhampton College, chose theprogramme to give them the vital work experiencethat would appeal to future employers.

Luke is working towards an Apprenticeship inFabrication and Welding. He said: “Nowadayscompanies want people who are Apprentice-trained because they are looking for theexperience, so an Apprenticeship puts you stepsahead of other learners.

“An Apprenticeship really helps you get used to aworking environment and the hours you have towork.

Machining Apprentice Jack McGinty added:“You are set up for life with an Apprenticeship andare virtually guaranteed a job at the end of it.

“In the current economic climate with so manypeople looking for work companies can afford to bepicky when recruiting new staff – by the time Icomplete my qualification I will already have twoyears experience in the trade, which will put meahead of the competition.”For more information on Apprenticeships at

City of Wolverhampton College call 01902317691 or visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk

While football has traditionally providedApprenticeships on the pitch, Walsall FootballClub have also taken the opportunity in theirmarketing and media department through theappointment of Marketing & MediaApprentice, Laura Yates, who is currentlystudying towards her NVQ Level 2 inMarketing at City of Wolverhampton College.

“It’s a fantastic place to work and I’ve alwaysbeen interested in football but I’m now getting tosee so much more of what goes on behind thescenes at a club.

“I’ve been in the press box on match-days,conducted interviews, worked on the blog, beeninvolved in the distribution of marketingmaterials and I’m starting work on theorganisation of a fun day at the club for localpeople and kids to come along too.

“It’s a varied role and one I’m really, reallypleased with”.

Club Secretary Dan Mole values thecontribution that Laura is making andbelieves that all football clubs should consideremploying Apprentices on the non-playing side.

“Laura has been a real breath of fresh air,” hesaid. “She’s keen and eager to learn and hasbecome a valuable member of the team. It’simportant that, as the town’s football club, we playan active role in the community. One way in whichto do that is to help youngsters progress both onand off the field.

“Apprenticeships in football do not have to beexclusive to the playing and community side ofthings. As Laura is proving, Apprentices can playan important role behind the scenes. It’simportant to invest in the future and take the timeto allow others, like Laura, to flourish in the workenvironment.”

• Stay local and save money! By 2012, with many university fees rising to £8,500, staying local is a cheaper, more flexible option.

• Courses can be studied at family-friendly times part-time in the evening.

• There are smaller classes and there is much more staff-student time together than at university.

• Study in our newly renovated and refurbished HE centre at our Paget Road campus built specially and exclusively for HE students only. Thecentre contains social, learning and wireless IT facilities, together with a student support network, enrolment and registration. There are no formal classrooms with rows of people looking towards the front - instead there are innovative learning spaces and small learning groups.

• Students remaining at home will stillbe able to apply for the loans from 2012/13 - they can even study and have a part-time job.

• Our flexible, modular units will be a convenient choice for your study

• The college has always had high success rates with excellent progression on to university. Employers in engineering and health send their employees here to do their qualifications: they recognise and recommend these courses. The new bachelor level degrees are employer-driven vocational degrees, not academic ones.

• The college employs highly qualified staff, with Masters degrees, who haveworked in the relevant industries: therefore links with industry are particularly strong.

Gurjinder Singh Dulay, from Oxley, was struggling to find employmentwhen he joined City of Wolverhampton College’s Employability programme last year.

Gurjinder, who had worked in Germany for 16 years, had never studied in the UK before and when hemoved to the Wolverhampton area didnot know where to start.

The Employability Team helped himonto an ESOL (English for Speakers ofOther Languages) course, which helpedgive him the motivation to continuefurther in education.

Gurjinder then signed up for one ofthe college’s Royal Mail recruitmentevents, and was delighted to be offereda job. Since then his life has been transformed. He has now settled in thecity and has a new home.

Gurjinder, who now hopes to progress on to study computing, said: “I receivedsuch great help from the tutors for interview preparation that I was lucky to get ajob with Royal Mail.

“My life has changed so much since working for them.”

Jatinder’s Training Success

Mandy Pitt contacted the Employability Team because she was looking for a change in career direction.

The 44-year-old had previouslyworked in the care sector but was interested in pursuing a career in administration. She joined an employability course and subsequentlymade it through to the interview stageof a job for Wolverhampton Homes.

Although she was unsuccessful,Mandy quickly secured alternative employment, and then used the adminknowledge and skills she had acquiredthrough the employability programme toachieve her current position at DCS Recruitment Services. Mandy said: “If youwant something bad enough you will work hard to gain it and if you have the rightpeople to support you on the way it’s great.

“Thanks to the Employability Team for givingme the support that I needed when I needed it.”

“This was the first time we haverecruited like this and I have beenamazed at how much interest therewas. It’s a lot easier than accepting CVsthrough each branch and nice to meetapplicants first hand.

We will definitely be using the servicein the future - it’s been reallysuccessful.”
