Explore It happens to all of us at one time or another, catches us unaware, calls to us through the layers of obligations and responsibilities around which we build our lives. It starts as a silent, insistent tug somewhere deep inside. Seek and ye shall find, it whispers. At first, we are reluctant to heed its call. We turn our backs on its invitations, choosing instead to bury ourselves deeper in our lives of endless consumption. And then one day, for no particular reason, our curiosity gets the better of us. We slow down long enough to hear our soul’s soft susurration as it beckons us to abandon our well-worn paths, take up our walking sticks, and set out for parts unknown.

Journeying is certainly nothing new. We are, by design, a nomadic species. Our ancestors used to average 12 miles a day as they traveled across wide-open plains, explored new lands, and catalogued their experiences in myth and song as they tried to understand their place in this world. To this day, many primitive peoples still undertake the noble quest of journeying. Perhaps the best known of these are the walk-abouts taken by the aboriginal peoples of Australia. This male right of passage can last up to six months, covers more than 1,000 miles, and involves a young man embarking on a journey to trace the paths or “songlines” of his ancestors. Sometimes referred to as a holiday, a walk-about is less about directionless wandering and more about purposeful journeying. At its heart, a walk-about (whether you are aboriginal or not) is a spiritual quest designed to reconnect the traveler with that which makes her whole.

Aboriginal peoples are not sole proprietors of purposeful journeying. It seems that venturing out in search of divine connection is practiced worldwide and dates back millenia. Each year, thousands of pilgrims trek to Jerusalem and Mecca. And let’s not forget the nearly 500-mile odyssey that is the El Camino de Santiago or Way of St. James.

Said to follow the footsteps of St. James the Apostle, this monumental excursion has been practiced since medieval times and takes the seeker over the Pyrenees in France to the city of Santiago de Compostela in Northwest Spain where St. James’s remains are said to be interred. Along the way, one encounters some of the most beautiful architecture the Old World has to offer and, perhaps more importantly, the pilgrim learns that to journey is to surrender to the rhythm of the open road.

And what of those pioneering souls who take up the call to challenge the boundaries of what can and cannot be accomplished? Trail blazers such as Amelia Earhart who recognized that dreams know nothing of boundaries and, defying social convention, became the first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. We look to these adventure seekers for inspiration and guidance and perhaps even for permission to step away from our desks, unchain ourselves from our emails, and untether ourselves from our materialistic obsessions.

Fortunately, we do not need to traverse the unforgiving deserts of the Australian Outback or pilot an airplane in order to embark on a meaningful journey. We can reawaken our nomadic spirits and reignite our wonders of discovery in simpler ways. I recently took a trip to Yosemite National Park in the High Sierras of Northern California. This was my first visit to one of our country’s most majestic natural landscapes and I couldn’t help but feel the tingle of adventure as my friend and I wended our way across the valley floor. Hundreds of thousands of years ago a massive glacier sculpted Yosemite Valley leaving in its wake spectacular granite cliffs, breathtaking waterfalls, and Giant Sequoia groves. On a cloudless Saturday morning, my friend and I set out on a six-mile hike. It didn’t take long for the serpentine trail to lead us away from the cacophony of tourist chatter and into the womb of the ancient pines.

With each step, the forest welcomed us, enveloped us, invited us to partake of her verdant splendor. The landscape was an enchanting tableau of rich sights and sounds from the syncopated knocking of woodpeckers high in the pine trees to the iridescence of butterfly wings passing through golden shafts of filtered light. The earth felt solid beneath our feet, each bend in the trail offering up new bounties of magnificence to observe: fragile saplings reaching skyward from the forest floor, twisted remnants of giant pines scarred and blackened by fire, massive granite boulders on which vibrant green and yellow lichens grew.

Six miles somehow turned into eight and as midday turned into late afternoon, shadows stretched lazily across the trail, rock climbers descended from their granite perches, and our tired feet finally found the flat plane of asphalt road that led us back to our car. Although we were both worn and weary, we couldn’t help but feel that somewhere along the way we’d reopened some important part of us that had been lying dormant for far too long, that with each step we had unearthed childlike curiosities that made the world now seem more vibrant, more alive. That we were somehow more alive.

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Lao Tzu spoke these words more than 2,000 years ago. His words speak to our innate craving for the open road, our longing for experiential wisdom. In the deep recesses of our souls we know that truth cannot be known unless we are willing to purposefully seek it and that to reach any sort of enlightenment, we must set foot upon the path toward it. Nobody can walk the journey for us. And it all begins rather simply … with a single step.

Dan Eldon was an English photojournalist, artist and activist. He and three colleagues were stoned to death by an angry mob in Mogadishu in an incident before the

artistic journals which his family exhibited on a worldwide tour. Part incubator, part agency, part academy, the Creative Visions Foundation inspired by Dan Eldon’s life supports and inspires creative activists- defined as people who use media and the arts to make real change around them. They provide broad outreach in the form of mentors, coaching, seminars and education, and even a Creative Activist Toolkit, to help support up to 75 high-performing creative activists projects.

Nails In The Key of Life

You can’t speak about self-expression without touching on nail color. This segment of the beauty industry has exploded over the last few years and shows no signs of slowing down. People are crazy for color and are using their nails as a palette to express themselves in a myriad of ways. New York based artist, Breanne Trammell was so inspired by nails and nail color that for her most recent art project she went to school to receive her nail technician license. In May she hit the road in a vintage camper to perform 500 manicures across the country within 2 ½ months. Her purpose is to connect with people through the act of performing a manicure, sharing conversations and building community. “By painting people’s nails” says Trammell, “they become the art.”

SpaRitual’s relationship with Spa at Vdara came from a shared vision merging artistic sensibility and sustainability. The well-appointed 18,000-Square-Foot Vdara Spa features cutting-edge green practices such as their recycling program, as well as organic products and nail services incorporating SpaRitual’s eco-friendly products. When approached by Vdara Spa to collaborate in a fundraising event to support the Nevada Ballet Theater, SpaRitual accepted the invitation seeing the opportunity to create an experience that truly encapsulates Slow Beauty. The NBT is a non-profit company that works year round in the Las Vegas Community to help raise funds and awareness for the ballet. SpaRitual and Vdara collaborated with the NBT team to create another masterpiece, “Swan Lacquer,” a delicately pink hued nail lacquer inspired by NBT’s fall performance of Swan Lake. The i.sawan Spa added 14 SpaRitual manicure and pedicure treatments to their menu using each State of Slow Beauty. During her visit to the Hyatt, Shel was invited to participate in a sacred intention ritual.

Shel also visited the cutting-edge Sexy Biscuit Nail Salon. In addition to manicure and pedic ure services using SpaRitual products, the salon is known for its whimsical and highly imaginative nail art creations and decor.
