As I write to you, tomorrow is the first day of spring. But I am confused, as summer has been around for a few days now. Go figure! Our British car sits in the garage getting some attention in the hope that it might be a go this summer. I have a friend in Toronto who also has a Jag xjs. We were discussing putting in a head liner as

the roof material tends to sag down eventually in old cars. He did his liner himself he proudly said, in leather. “Leather”, I said, “doing the corners must have been trouble.” There was a long pause. He said he was getting into his Jag right then and looking at his roof liner. There was another pause. Then he said “It looks ….. it looks like shit!” I laughed pretty hard. This is why mine gets done by a shop.

The winter gathering was well attended and everyone seemed to have a good time. Len Beatens was the entertaining auctioneer and there were many prizes to give out. Thanks to the people that helped out: Linda Thomas, Ila Lawton, the Scottish dancers and those who supplied the many donations. Christine and Gerry Henden helped with the organization of the event. Betsy and Fred Pixley authored the quiz that we all worked on over dinner. The prizes were a bottle of wine for the two winning tables. Peter Young brought his ghetto blaster and later in the evening, some of our more energetic members danced up a storm. It was a fun evening for all that attended. David Stock announced that the summer BBQ’s are all arranged, many thanks to the members who volunteered their homes. This is a great incentive to have all our British rides shined up and running. Speaking of members who volunteer to help our club, Ken Law is to be congratulated for putting out a fine bunch of Spanners that are not only very interesting, and professional but also on time. We always look forward to good reading. Ken and Barb Law were the deserving recipients of the President’s Trophy for 2012. It was presented at the Winter Gathering by David Stock. Jamie Berry

I hope everyone enjoyed our mild winter and have their cars ready to roll if they have not already been out. It is hard to believe sitting here looking out the window and rushing to get this issue of the Spanner out that we have already had the Triumph out for a couple of drives.

I had sort of resigned myself to the fact that the LBC’s would remain covered up until we got back from our trip to the far east in early May (another item off of the bucket list), but our very early spring came along if only for a week or so and I could not resist getting the Triumph out.

The Healey still needs the new windshield installed and new down pipes installed but that will have to wait until the back ordered parts come in. The Jaguar speedo was repaired over the winter but the cable needs to be cleaned and the speedo installed and I can’t do that until I get it out of the storage garage. You will notice that this issue is short on articles from members, I need your help in this area, let members know how your latest restoration project is going or write an article about a British Car event you attended or a trip you took in your British car. Happy and Safe Motoring, Ken Law

Another alternate fuel?

John Ferguson sent me some photos of vintage transportation. I hope this is not a sign of what we will have to do in the future.

During the Second World War several thousand cars were converted to run on coal gas or on charcoal-burning gas producers. The government waived a mileage tax for converted cars, eager to reduce petrol use. There was another advantage in conversion: petrol was strictly rationed until June 1950.

Club Events The Winter Gathering Approximately sixty members of the club gathered at the Travelodge Hotel (formerly the Ramada Inn) overlooking the Bay of Quinte in beautiful Belleville to celebrate winter and enjoy the company of fellow club members wishing for an early spring. Thanks to the efforts of Jamie and Shelia Berry along with their helpers Christine and Gerry Hendon, Ila Lawton

Betsy and Fred Pixley, along with Linda Thomas, as well all of those that donated their time and items to the event a great time was had by all. After socializing for an hour we were treated to an excellent Beef and Chicken Parmesan buffet dinner along with the Club’s prerequisite excellent selection of deserts. Betsy and Fred Pixley prepared an excellent crossword puzzle using British and North American automotive terms as well as names of Club members to challenge our knowledge and intellect. The second part of the puzzle was to identify the geographical region that the automotive terms applied to i.e. British or North American. This portion of the challenge created some animated discussion particularly since there was a bottle of wine at stake for the first and second place tables. We also learned that there is also a difference in terminology between Canada and the US. (Did you know that cars in northern New York don’t have gas pedals, they have accelerators just like cars in Britain?) Like the

great leader and moderator she is, Besty maintained control over the event and referred to her source document to resolve the issue and avoid an international incident. Len Beatens oversaw a live auction for the various items that members and Club supporters had donated with many of the items made especially for the event. Lee warned all of us that if we made any extraneous moves we could be struck with the dreaded phrase “you bought it”. The carrot cake that Barbara and I bought was excellent, but did not help my weight management program.

The door prize table was overflowing and many people agonized over their selection only to be sent back to the door prize table by their spouse because they did not pick the correct item ( one individual was heard to say, “but dear you can never have too many wrenches”). Attendees were entertained by a group from the Belleville Scottish Dancers, bringing some added culture to the event. (cont’d on page 13)

Much to our surprise Barbara and I we were called up by David Stock to receive the Presidents award for our contribution to the Club. Thank you to the selection committee for our consideration and recognition. Throughout the evening Ila Lawton sold tickets for the People’s Choice or Rainbow Auction and the tickets were drawn towards the end of the formalities with much rejoicing by those that won their selection. Check out that smile on Wes with his new “man purse”.

At the end of formalities of the evening which included the awarding of door prizes to what I believe was everyone, Peter Young set up his stereo system and provided the “hangers on” with some appropriate dance music. The group finally decided to vacate the facility around mid night after an excellent evening. Thanks again to the organizing committee and particularly Jamie and Shelia for taking a leadership position and organizing an excellent Winter Gathering.

Touring Madeira in a British Sports Car by John Morralee Not too many people would relate driving a sports car with a cruise: you can if your ship takes you to Madeira. We were on the Queen Mary 2 on our way to South Africa when I noticed one of the excursions was ' Drive a Vintage Sports Car'. I found that for a large amount of $'s plus a large amount of Euros as deposit against bending anything I would be able to join the fun. The Vintage sports cars turned out to be TR6s. I may be wrong about the '6' but as a Austin Healey owner I can at least recognize a Triumph when I see one. I am sure our knowledgeable readers will know anyway from the photo. We were not exactly turned loose on unsuspecting Madeira but had to drive in convoy, there were six of us, following a white Mercedes. You should be aware that Madeira is an isle of 35 miles by 22 miles consisting of one volcanic mountain which rises to 6,000ft. Except for a coastal road of some 5 miles there is not a flat , or straight piece of road, for more than 100yds any where. For the first part of the drive getting out of 2nd. was quite an event; needless to say the drive was conducted at a stately speed of not more than 20mph. After a coffee stop on top of the mountain things improved enormously and 4th gear was the norm, on reaching the coastal road we were let loose and enjoyed a glorious finish back to Funchel the Capital city. My assigned car's hand brake did not work too well -- lots of clutch fibers were lost as every halt sign was on a hill; usually with bonnet pointing up the hill!! It was also out of tune, this may have been because of the difficulty of tuning correctly from sea level start to 3,000ft. finish. It also rattled a lot no doubt due to horrendous road conditions (read potholes and road repairs). The hiring company I understood has a variety of sports cars --even a Healey which are available for hire under the same conditions as we experienced. I would rate the outing as an' experience' an ability to say 'I have done that!!' nothing more. You could have had the same experience in any old car. BUT I have driven a sports around Madeira and got my deposit back.

And the Beat Goes On By Jamie Berry The saga of the “One More Job” on our Jag (Spanner Jan 2012) continues. Now our Jag roof with the new metal panel, filling the hole left by the sunroof removal, needed painting. A shop in Belleville was recommended and they did an ok job. No doubt, readers of this saga, will examine the result and comment at this summer’s BBQ’s. The craftsmen who installed the after-market sunroof must have had a bad day as they carved up the reinforcing frames supporting the roof rather extensively. Andrew had to weld in the metal pieces that I had pre cut to fill the many holes and long slices. He did not think the installers were “craftsmen” Speaking of British cars, if the roof has a compressed fibre panel that fits under the roof metal, and the roof liner material attaches to the panel, it has a name….. “they” call it a biscuit. Anyway, the biscuit I had, needed some work because I had installed two ribs to help support the rather floppy roof metal and as a result, the biscuit did not fit well. Also, it is advised that the seats be removed for the interior work, but as the car has to be driven to the different shops, a new removable seat was built and installed. What do you think of it? I am hoping that once the biscuit is fitted, the upholsterer can do the rest. But then, there might be more problems, who knows?

Lorne Plunket sends us this interesting photo: These workmen have just installed bollards to stop nurses from parking on the pavement/sidewalk outside the Royal Hospital in Belfast. They are cleaning up at the end of the day. How long do you think it will be before they realise they need an exit plan?
