Greetings Fellow Dry Cleaners,

I am writing this one week after a successful weekend of SDA activities in Houston. SDA meetings were held in conjunction with our Allied Trades partner Gulf States annual open house. There were eleven of our Allied Trades members participating in this event so it was good to be there in support of all of them. To those that attended, thank you for braving the inclement weather to be in attendance. Your commitment to this organization is greatly appreciated. Thanks to Fabriclean Supply for sponsoring our Friday evening event at Top Golf and for the Saturday hospitality extended to us by Gulf States.

As I visited with many dry cleaners on Saturday that are not DLI/SDA members, and touted the advantages of membership, I was reminded why membership is so important. You might think it is for survival of the association, but I would counter that membership ensures the very survival of this industry in which I am so proud to be a part of. We can be islands and fragmented or we can join together, seek improvement as an industry, and raise the profile and reputation of our trade in the eyes of the consumer. Our associations exist to make us better at every level. Perhaps this statement from Jim Rohn says it best, “a good objective of leadership is to help those who are doing poorly to do well and to help those who are doing well to do even better.” DLI/SDA membership fulfills this objective as all dry cleaners can benefit from membership.

Just this week, a newer member that met with us in Houston last weekend, came to my location to see and discuss some technology that he is considering. He complimented our members by saying how blown away he was at our openness and willingness to offer help. Why wouldn’t or shouldn’t we be open and willing? This is a young man trying to improve his operation and I believe he will be a better operator because of his desire to learn and implement the best practices. Not only should we help those seeking to be better, we have an obligation to do so. Join me in heeding the words of Theodore Roosevelt, “Every man owes a part of his time and money to the business in which he is engaged. No man has a moral right to withhold his support from an organization that is striving to improve conditions within his sphere.”

Don’t forget to check out the new SDA website and also take a few minutes to personalize your profile. Many new features will be added in the coming months. Mark your calendars now so you will not miss out on the April show in Ft. Worth. As we enter the holiday season I want you to know how thankful I am for our executive leadership provided by Chuck Hempstead and his team, your board and officers, and for the members we serve. May you be blessed this Thanksgiving and may the joy of Christmas fill your lives.

At your service,

Brian RobertsonPresident, Southwest Drycleaners Association

Board Meeting Recap

At Top Golf, from left to right, Annika Sorenstam, Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, Michelle Wie and

SDA Immediate Past President Allan Cripe (L) and President Brian Robertson enjoy the cool but dry

evening during a wet weekend in Houston.

I always mark my calendar to attend the Cleaners Showcase. It just makes good business sense to make the trip. Absolutely the easiest and smartest way to view all the latest equipment, techniques, and trends in the industry. The educational opportunities are definitely beneficial as is the ability to share ideas with old friends and new acquaintances.

I’d estimate that in the past four to five years I’ve spent about $300,000 in new equipment to make my business more efficient. I usually buy at the SDA Showcase and sometimes the DLI Clean Show.

Old Yellow Stains...By: Jeff Schwarz

Here is the scenario...

A customer comes in with a white tablecloth, full of stains. She puts it down on the counter and says,

“I have no idea what this could be. I washed this myself, and when I put it away in the closet, it was stain- free, Now I take it out to use it, and look at all these yellow stains...”

This is a teachable moment.

Now, you could go into the physical laws of sugars caramelizing and oils turning yellow with heat and time. You could ramble on and on about what causes the whole mess and what accelerates the process, or you could tell her about “The Apple”. (It is the very best visual story, that will help your customers understand...)

“You know, when you take a bite out of an apple, then you put it down for 5- 10 minutes. What happens to that apple? Where it used to be white and juicy, is now yellow, brown, gnarly and nasty...the same thing happens with sugars and oils.”

Knowing how the stain got there is the easy part.

Removing the stain is the tricky part.

Dry cleaning is the best for removing paints, oils and greases. You might be able to apply some dryside P.O.G to the yellowed area, heat it up and flush the stain out on the spotting board; (Amyl Acetate is also a good choice) then dry clean the item. (Then wash to get the freshness back into the fabric.)

For a stain that has really been heat set for a long time, dry cleaning (even in Perc) will not remove this stain.

It is time to move on to Potassium Permanganate (PermaGo...for old permanent stains on “Whites Only”) Potassium Permanganate used to come in crystal form that would be mixed up for daily use. (After about a day, the mixture would lose its violet purple color and its effectiveness.) PermaGo comes in a quart bottle and will last for years.

You can use this bleach on the spotting board or in a soak. (2 ounces of PermaGo in 1 gallon of hot water, for soaking, approx. 20 minutes.)

After using Potassium Permanganate on the board or in a soak, you must neutralize this bleach!!! PermaGo is a bright purple, that will turn to a brownish color. Neutralizing removes this brown color and stops the bleaching action.

This is a remarkable tool for stain removal where nothing else will work.

I saved a hand made lace tablecloth, which was a family heirloom, using this product. Adcock’s Cleaners, in Midland TX, charged $10.00 per napkin (set of 12) to remove these old set-in stains, using PermaGo.

Up-charge for your knowledge and expertise.

Sometimes your laundry business doesn't need a major renovation or expansion. Maybe  you just need a smaller upgrade to keep your laundromat moving in the right direction.

One such upgrade is new equipment. Your laundromat could have outdated machines, which can be costing you time and money. On the other hand, newer equipment can be a serious boost to your business, whether you are replacing or adding. Best of all, this type of transaction is relatively affordable, often going for less than $200,000.

So, what are the benefits of bringing in new machines into your laundromat? Here are four:

1. IMPROVED APPEARANCE

Before we can talk about the performance perks of new equipment, we should consider what the new machines will do to the marketing side of your laundromat. On one hand, older machines tend to look outdated, inefficient and even sometimes dirty and unattractive. On the other hand, new machines will look cleaner, more efficient and more attractive. You can advertise that you have top-of-the-line machines in your laundromat, and customers will get a sense that your business offers the best service around.

2. REDUCED COSTS

After the relatively small upfront cost of new machines for your laundromat, this upgraded equipment will actually start saving you money. For starters, newer machines are more energy efficient. Most commercial washers and dryers from top companies now emphasize lower utility bills and reduced water and electricity usage. Therefore, you'll likely start seeing reduced monthly costs once the machines are in place. You could even see an increase in business, as word spreads that you have high-quality equipment at your laundromat. Naturally, an increase in profits will help offset any costs you've accrued from installing new machines.

Four Benefits of New Equipment at Your Laundromat

By: Dennis Diaz

In addition to efficient, new machines simply look better.

NOVEMBER 2015

3. FASTER TURN-AROUND

Long wash and dry times are the bane of any laundromat's existence. If a customer has to spend hours in your store, they'll be taking away machines from other patrons, plus they'll be bored. They could even opt for another laundromat with faster wash and dry times. With new machines, you can reduce the length of a standard wash/dry cycle. Modern equipment can work faster, all while using less water and energy. This means you'll have a quicker turn-around time, and you'll be able to get more customers in and out of your doors in any given day.

4. MORE VERSATILITY

What type of clothing and fabrics can your customers wash? Can they run through quilts, blankets, jackets as well as silks and cotton? With older machines, your customers could have been limited in their options. They might have to pick and choose which machine they used depending on their needs, or even head to a different business to wash the heavy stuff. Now, with new equipment, they don't have to make that choice. Today's machines are more versatile, so they can wash and dry a wider range of clothing and fabrics at once, with no risk of damaging the equipment.

The bottom line is that you don't have to live with outdated machines in your laundromat. It doesn't cost a lot to upgrade, and there are affordable financing options available should you need assistance. Best of all, there are a number of rewards for having new machines installed. These benefits can easily recoup any expenses to begin with, and you'll make a change that is in the best interests of your business and your customers.

Need new equipment? Contact one of our Allied Trade members or save a bundle and make plans to purchase your equipment at the Cleaners Showcase coming April 22-24, 2016 in Ft. Worth TX.
