The High Court in Pretoria on Thursday dismissed Shuttleworth’s application to strike down the whole of Section 9 of the Currency and Exchange Act and all of the Exchange Control Regulations as unconstitutional. Shuttleworth, who now lives on the Isle of Man, said the exchange control system forced him to leave the country in 2001 as he could not carry out his entrepreneurial and philanthropic ventures. The expat entrepreneur had to pay over R250 million in order to get some of his assets out of South Africa. He argued that the money should be returned to him, because he had paid a 10 percent “exit charge,” when moving his R4.27bn worth assets abroad in 2008 and 2009. Government abandoned the levy a year after Shuttleworth moved the remainder of his assets out of the country. Shuttleworth’s fortune is now split between tax haven the Isle of Man and the UK mainland. However, he is still a South African citizen and his money is used to invest in start-ups in South Africa, and his charities continue to support funding and fellowships to social innovators. Judge Francis Legodi dismissed the businessman’s application for the Reserve Bank to return his money. He said the purpose of the 10 percent “exit charge” was to to maintain South Africa’s macro- economic limit health by limiting the outflow of funds, to promote financial growth and stability. The judge however granted an order declaring Section 9(3) of the Currency and Exchanges Act as well as certain portions of the Exchange Control Regulations unconstitutional. Section 9(3) gives the President not only the power to amend or suspend any part of the Currency and Exchanges Act, but also the power to amend or suspend any other Act of Parliament. In his judgement, Legodi identified that various aspects of the exchange control regime inhibit the right to free trade, impede internet transactions and infringe the right to privacy. Democratic Alliance MP and Shadow Finance Minister Tim Harris said that the High Court’s decision to declare certain sections of the Currency and Exchanges Act unconstitutional opened a door for a parliamentary review of the country’s “antiquated” exchange control system. Harris said he would write to the chairman of the Standing Committee on Finance, Thabadiawa Alfred Mufamadi, to ask that it urgently convene public hearings on exchange controls with a view to amending the Currency and Exchanges Act of 1933 and making recommendations about overhauling the associated regulations. Harris commented, “Although Shuttleworth did not win his case overall, he has achieved a significant victory in shedding light on the need to overhaul our exchange controls. Judge Legodi suspended several declarations for twelve months to correct the legislation. This is Parliament’s chance to play its role as South Africa’s legislating body by conducting a full review of the legislation and regulations.” Prior to the court case, Reserve Bank legal representative Jeremy Gauntlett SC was outraged that Shuttleworth claimed it was in the interest of all South Africans to destroy the entire exchange control system. “He couldn’t get his money out of the country. Now he wants to pull the whole system down. Why should this financial refugee speak on behalf of the entirety of South African society?”

SHUTTLEWORTH LOSES CASE AGAINST SA RESERVE BANK| ‘Financial refugee’ Mark Shuttleworth loses court appeal for SA Reserve Bank to return R250 million of his money – but judgment could result in parliamentary review of the country’s ‘antiquated’ exchange control system

by STAFF REPORTERSOUTH African IT billionaire Mark Shuttleworth has failed both in his court bids for the SA Reserve Bank to return R250 million of his money and to have South Africa’s exchange control system declared unconstitutional.

Judge Francis Legodi dismissed

the businessman’s application for the Reserve Bank to return his money. He said the purpose of the 10 percent “exit charge” was to to maintain South Africa’s macro-economic limit health by limiting the outflow of funds, to promote financial growth and stability.

Harris said he would write to the chairman of the Standing Committee on Finance, Thabadiawa Alfred Mufamadi, to ask that it urgently convene public hearings on exchange controls with a view to amending the Currency and Exchanges Act of 1933 and making

recommendations about overhauling the associated regulations.

Harris commented, “Although Shuttleworth did not win his case overall, he has achieved a significant victory in shedding light on the need to overhaul our exchange controls. Judge Legodi suspended several declarations for twelve months to correct the legislation. This is Parliament’s chance to play its role as South Africa’s legislating body by conducting a full review of the

legislation and regulations.”Prior to the court case, Reserve

Bank legal representative Jeremy Gauntlett SC was outraged that Shuttleworth claimed it was in the interest of all South Africans to destroy the entire exchange control system. “He couldn’t get his money out of the country. Now he wants to pull the whole system down. Why should this financial refugee speak on behalf of the entirety of South African society?”

Midlands: Newborn baby found inside South African shopping bag| Police in Worcester are searching for the mother of a newborn baby boy abandoned inside a shopping bag bearing the distinctive logo of Woolworths South Africa. by STAFF REPORTERPOLICE in Worcester, England, are searching for the mother of a newborn baby boy who was abandoned inside a South African shopping bag in the early hours of Friday morning.

After being woken by the doorbell at about 4.15am, homeowners Adrienne and Jon Hunt opened the door to find an orange Woolworths bag on their doorstep. Inside it was the newborn, clad in a babygrow and

wrapped in a blanket. Thought to be around 24 hours old when found, he is healthy and looks as though he was born to term, according to Patti Paine, head of midwifery at the hospital. Paine said that a search of records had not revealed any expectant mothers known to the health services in the city, to whom the baby may belong. A 24-hour phone line has been set up by the hospital in order for the mother to make contact. She can contact a midwife on

01905 760 663. Baby bagPolice are appealing for the mother to come forward over concerns for her welfare. “The mother’s health and welfare remain our priority and we are doing all we can to trace her so we can confirm she is safe and well,” said Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Williamson from West Mercia Police. “If you recognise the bag or know of anyone who may have a connection with South Africa and is due to give birth, please contact us,” she added. The bag is being

forensically tested for anything that may help officers find the mother.

They have also released images of the bag bearing the distinctive logo of Woolworths in South Africa, in case a member of the public recognises it.

Anyone who has any information as to who the mother could be should to call West Mercia Police on the non-emergency police number 101.

Information can be passed on anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The world rolls up its sleeves for Madiba on 18 July

by STAFF REPORTERTHE world celebrated Nelson Mandela Day with acts of community service and messages of goodwill to the former president.

In London a large birthday card was left at the feat of the Nelson Mandela statue in Parliament Square, where well-wishers from around the world left their messages of congratulations to the global icon. One of the messages read; “To our hero Nelson Mandela, we cannot thank you enough for all the wonderful things you have done for us all.” Staff members from the South African High commission in London meanwhile used their 67 Minutes on Mandela Day to give a helping hand to Richard House Children’s Hospice, based in Newham, east London, which is a purpose-built children’s hospice caring for children from across the capital, Essex, Kent and the Home Counties.

The core purpose of the hospice is to accompany families caring for children with life-limiting, life-threatening and complex healthcare needs, during their journey through life. The aim is to create positive experiences along the way that become good memories for the future.

A fitting way to pay tribute to Madiba, who said what he missed most while in prison was the presence of children.

The U.N. hosted an informal General Assembly in honor of Mandela with former United

States President Bill Clinton and co-prisoner and Mandela friend Andrew Mlangeni who spoke to mark the occasion.

Thousands of people from around the world took time to roll up their sleeves and dedicated their time to helping the less fortunate in the spirit of the Nelson Mandela International Day.

“This year has seen the biggest Madiba birthday celebration ever. We regard this as a fitting tribute to the triumph of the South African people against institutionalised racism, led by Madiba and many other illustrious freedom fighters,” Zuma told a press conference after the conclusion of the 6th SA-EU Summit recently held in Pretoria.

IN the aftermath of the Treason Trial verdict, Mandela travelled the country incognito, disguising himself as a chauffeur...and organising the ANC’s new cell structure and a mass stay-at-home strike for 29 May.

Referred to as the “Black Pimpernel” in the press – a reference to Emma Orczy’s 1905 novel The Scarlet Pimpernel – the police put out a warrant for his arrest. Mandela held secret meetings with reporters, and after the government failed to prevent the strike, he warned them that many anti-apartheid activists would soon resort to violence through groups

like the PAC’s Poqo. He believed that the ANC should form an armed group to channel some of this violence, convincing both ANC leader Albert Luthuli – who was morally opposed to violence – and allied activist groups of its necessity.

Inspired by Fidel Castro’s 26th of July Movement in the Cuban Revolution, in 1961 Mandela co-founded Umkhonto we Sizwe (“Spear of the Nation”, abbreviated MK) with Sisulu and the communist Joe Slovo. Becoming chairman of the militant group, he gained ideas from illegal literature on guerilla warfare by China’s Chairman Mao and Che Guevara.

The OPTIMIST

The ‘other’ English SummerAM sitting here in my underwear writing this article. It is not a pretty sight. Forget about women ‘glowing’, this is a combustible situation and I am on the verge of doing just that. It is not hot; it is Hades rising to mock us mortals who prayed for that English summer to arrive. This is payback time.

Yet I say not one word. I will take this ‘Hotazel’ climate and walk around near naked in my flat , but say one word? Utter one complaint? Not

I – for fear of jinxing all and we are plunged back into dark days far too early. Clearly my offspring do not agree – they look at me in this form of undress and they swallow hard, pull up their noses and avoid all eye contact – mothers are not supposed to show flesh as I was informed by my son on the beach. There is a time, and then there is a time … and this is not the time he wants to see his mother uncovered.

But you have to laugh at the Londoners around you when the temperature soars. All bouncy in the morning, singing ‘Oh what a beautiful morning’ as they jump on their bicycles and walk briskly to the underground. Poor fools, just give it a few hours. Those unfortunates in suits are already pulling at their collars. Soon women begin blowing down the fronts of their dresses and fanning the skirts to encourage some cool breeze up their legs. Everyone sweats – literally. By lunchtime the brave still disrobe in the city parks for a quick tan, more like a mini sun-stroke to last into the Autumn. Others take refuge in smoothies and frappachinos: which I have now learnt is the equivalent to thirty one cookies. Damn! Who the hell wants coffee at this critical time of

meltdown and now I cannot even indulge in the satanic frap.

Take a moment and think of those ‘bobbies’ who have to wear helmets and anti-detonating jackets as planes catch fire at Heathrow ( I like to think it was the heat.) Those poor tour guides attempting to ignite the imagination of French school children who would rather overdose at the M and M store than stand in the sun and learn about Shakespeare. We simply are not zoned for heat without air-conditioning, swimming pools and beaches. Want a sauna – take the tube.

Evening time and our tiny balconies are littered with corpses, finally having succumbed to the wilting of the day. There is no energy left for dinner, the ice cubes melt before the first sip and the wine stays warm. We wave meekly at each other, nodding in silent resignation, unable to muster a few words. Most of us are semi-naked but nothing exciting about it.

But complain? Never! We of this island know what waits for us. Black. Cold. Wishing for summer. So every morning, there we are bopping away, Ibiza style. This is the ‘other’ English summer. This is the test.

Shhh – do not say a word. Pretend it’s perfect.

Catch ‘Sugar Man’ Rodriguez at Wilderness Festival this August!BY STAFF REPORTER SOUTH African music fans who were bleak not to see Rodriguez at Hop Farm Music Festival, an event he was scheduled to headline earlier this month but cancelled due to poor ticket sales, can catch Sugarman himself at the award-winning Wilderness Festival from Thursday 8 – Sunday 11 August 2013.

Following last year’s sun-drenched success, Wilderness (winner of Best New Festival 2011 – UK Festival Awards and Best Small Festival 2012 – Live Music Awards) will bring its third season of arts and escapades to Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire. The festival has also been extended to four days.

This year’s line-up includes some of the most respected visionaries in music, food, theatre and the literary arts.

The musical programme features a host of carefully curated artists including legendary Detroit troubadour Rodriguez, who rocketed from unknown talent in his homeland and cult musician in just South Africa to global notoriety following the Bafta- and Oscar-winning documentary about his life, Searching for Sugar Man. There will be an outdoor screening of Searching For Sugar Man at Wilderness.

Following Noah and the Whale’s recent announcement of a new album and film, directed by frontman Charlie Fink, the band will close the main stage on Sunday. Other additions to this incredible bill include Martha Wainwright, Brit Award winner Tom Odell, Michael Kiwanuka, Matt Corby, Tribes, London Folk Guild and an exclusive performance by

Australian act Empire of The Sun (their only UK date this year.)

The festival’s flagship long-table banquets return with three talismanic chefs at the helm. One of the most influential names on the London food circuit, Russell Norman, will be the grand host of an exquisite banquet with his team from Polpo. Get ready for mouth-watering food in an awe-inspiring setting, as Russell and the Polpo team treat you to a foodie experience like no other.

Following the sell-out success of last year’s banquets, Ottolenghi is returning to Wilderness for another headline sitting, while the third chef to join this mouthwatering line-up is legendary restaurateur Mark Hix. Celebrated for his British style and seasonal dishes, Cornbury Park will be the perfect backdrop for Hix’s sumptuous courses.

The Lakeside Spa was 2012’s most sought after ticket and will be bigger than ever this year, with stunning wood fired saunas and hot tubs along with the Sanctuary well-being area, offering massages, workshops, yoga and meditation.

The arts offering will include breathtaking performances from some of France’s most prolific circus and theatre collectives, Transe Express and Les Pepones. Expect stunning, high-energy animatronics and death defying trapeze performances.

Shakespeare’s Globe, Petersham Playhouse and opera from Vignette Productions will also treat festivalgoers to some unique performances.

You can also expand your mind at the Wilderness Forum supported by The Huffington Post UK, which

this year includes a programme of cerebral discussions with The School of Life, The Royal Observatory, Intelligence Squared, The Idler Secret Forum Fiction (including Granta, Tibor Jones, Canongate, Bloomsbury, Penguin), Oxford University Astrophysics Department, The Royal Observatory, Shamanic Street Preachers, The British Humanist Association, The Catalyst Club & The Odditorium, The Napoleonic Association, Charles Dickens Museum and Oxford Museum of Natural History.

The outdoors is also a massive part of the festival – from Bushcraft Company workshops to hunter gather cookery workshops, wild swimming, horse riding, green crafts and the like.

The much lauded late-night parties will see festival heavyweights Secret Garden Party and party purveyors Rumpus taking over the Secret Valley when the sun goes down.

Weekend Camping Tickets for the festival are only £139 each. (Young Person, Family and Local tickets are sold out). Full line up and tickets on www.wildernessfestival.com

South African HIV charity Love Is All We Need gathers friends in Brightonby HAILEY JEAN FLEE THE evening was warm in Brighton and the welcome was even warmer atc. A UK based charity that supports children affected by the HIV/AIDs pandemic in South Africa, Love is All We Need was started in 2006 by a small, passionate band of Londoners wanting to lend a helping hand to South Africa’s poorest communities. They currently support the Hope Centre, in Pietermaritzburg. The Hope Centre not only cares for 36 orphans, but also 600 child-led households in Sweetwaters, a nearby community where over 100 people die every week from AIDS.

A grim statistic certainly, but the message spread by the trustees and volunteers working for Love is All We Need was far from negative. Instead, after drinks were had and everyone was seated for the presentation, Lisa, Bev and Carol retold stories that, while often tragic to begin with, could surely not fail to warm even the iciest of hearts.

We heard the tale of HIV positive Seth and his brother, who were buried

alive by their mother, herself mentally affected by AIDS. Luckily, through what’s known as the ‘bush telegraph’, word filtered back to Gail and Zanelle of the Hope Centre, and the brothers were saved. Although Seth suffers from a speech impediment due to oxygen deprivation, he loves singing, which not only entertains everyone at the centre, but also has the added benefit of helping his speech.

Seth is only one of hundreds of children helped by the Hope Centre every day. The Centre hands out fourteen tonnes of dry food a month, runs clinics and beadwork

projects and educates HIV positive children too ill to cope with normal school. They couldn’t do much of this without the support of Love is All We Need and the kind donations from the public. In the future, these donations will be put towards building bigger premises with more educational and medical facilities, as well as providing more carers and support for child led households.

‘C’est la Vie’ – Lanie van Reenen se Afri-Frans droomby KAREN DE VILLIERS JK Rowling het eenkeer, voor ‘n baie gestelde gehoor, gepraat van die voordele van mislukking. Hoe dié diep waters en slaggate van die lewe, soms presies is wat ons nodig het om uiteindelike suksesvol te wees. Dalk nie eers die sukses wat ons verbeel het nie, maar iets totaal anders.

“The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive. You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity. Such knowledge is a true gift … and it has been worth more than any qualification I ever earned.

Only sometimes one is too busy to go mad.

C’est La Vie is haar storie.

Daar moet sy haar ‘ ultimate ‘ droom uitleef, haar pragkind weer mooi maak.

Ek voel asof iemand

my gusteling verf prentjie by die kleuterskool kom opfrommel. Maar dit is waar ek ophou. As jy meer van dié merkwaardelike mens se lewe wil weet, dan lees jy self.

JK Rowling sê verder, ‘It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default.’

by MYAK HOMBERGER THERE is that moment when you get asked to do a food review for a chain restaurant and you assume the usual is going to happen. Microwaved, pre-prepared meals, wilted salads etc. So it was with some trepidation we went to the Spur in Staines to review the new summer menu and the restaurant.

On entering the restaurant we were greeted by someone who actually wanted us to be there which completely threw us and the surprises didn’t stop there…

Having read the menu we had a starter of fish goujons – usually a small amount of reconstituted fish inside a large amount of batter. What a revelation! Large pieces of actual whole fish with minimal batter that had been freshly made were served with a fresh salad base. Light and tasty, moist fish with a lemon and mayonnaise dip. The question was would the rest of the food be as good and could we order a couple more portions before the main course?

For the main course expectations had been set and so when the Cajun grilled chicken breast and lemon zest prawn salad (from the new summer menu) arrived they had a lot to live up to. The Cajun grilled chicken did not disappoint, moist chicken was well cooked and a generous portion was straddled by a fresh salad and sauce pot allowing you to decide how much sauce you want rather than some halfwit chef that feels the need to dump copious amounts of vile sauce over food to hide its dryness. Simple and tasty chicken that left no unpleasant aftertaste or oiliness. A hit!

Could we get 3 out of 3? The prawn salad was a revelation… any restaurant is only as good as the salad or vegetables its serve. It’s the most overlooked food. The salad tasted like the chef picked it from the garden especially for my dish. I have not had salad taste this fresh or as good outside South Africa! Good, crunchy salad even

Among other things the best pudding you will find this side of the equator…| Spur in Staines is a restaurant that must be seen to be believed if for nothing else but to taste the freshest salad outside South Africa and heavenly sticky toffee pudding. Myak Homberger reviews Spur’s new summer menu.

the avocado was soft unlike so many a hard avo served in the UK. The prawns? Well the sauce clung to the prawns and shells magically. We should have asked for more sauce but this seemed greedy. The sauce took nothing away from the prawns but complemented them perfectly.

Pudding was debated and in the end we decided on the vanilla pannacotta cheesecake and the sticky toffee pudding sold to us by a waiter that had actually eaten the food and enjoyed it, another thing you don’t hear very often in chains and it did not disappoint! My oh my…. I’m sure the readers won’t believe me that you can have a light sticky toffee pudding but the different layers of the cake were light and complimentary. Alongside the ice cream it was remarkable and the waiter was right, it was well worth eating. The panna cotta was beautiful to the point were you could taste the vanilla pods used in its creation. Light and delicious, it was as good as you get from an Italian restaurant.

So combine the good, genuine service with remarkable, fresh food made it feel like summer sitting in the outside area. This is

just the sort of food I want to be eating in summer and not a chip in sight for those that don’t want them. This is a restaurant that must be seen to be believed if for nothing else but to taste salad that good and sticky toffee pudding like that. The challenge now is to think of reasons to go. We are going to milk the summer menu as much as can until its no longer sensible to sit outside and eat.

Bring on the summer and bring on our next trip to Spur, we even got a 10% discount card for free.

Another good reason to visit Spur this summer is that if you have a meal from the summer menu you can be entered for a free prize draw to win £1,000 of holiday vouchers!

Entry to the competition is deliciously simple – any customer over the age of 18 years, buying a meal from Spur Steak & Grill’s Summer Menu up until 20 September 2013 is in with a chance to win.

Spur’s new summer menu includes:• Lemon Zest Prawn Salad created

by Spur Aberdeen chef, Grzegorz Kondracki, with butterflied lemon zest prawns with crisp salad leaves and avocado strips

• Sticky Ginger Chicken Kebabs served with mini corn on the cobs and fresh garden salad

• Grilled Red Snapper Fillet drizzled with lemon garlic & basil on a bed of green beans and sprinkled with crispy bacon pieces and cherry tomatoes

• Cajun Grilled Chicken Breast flame grilled and served with a creamy Cajun sauce and a four-leaf salad

• Homemade Ice Cream with a choice of fresh banana and honeycomb or chocolate fudge fingers

• Vanilla Pannacotta Cheesecake

by BRETT PETZERQUINTON Fortune (born 21 May 1977) is a South African former footballer who has represented a number of European clubs including Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and Bolton Wanderers.

Fortune has earned 46 caps for South Africa, including playing in the 1998 and the 2002 World Cups. He most recently played for Doncaster Rovers, but failed to earn an extension to his contract when it expired in January 2010.

Quinton Fortune left South Africa at the early age of 14, during the dying days of apartheid, to play for the Tottenham Hotspur junior team while attending London’s prestigious Forest School. However, Fortune failed to make an appearance for the senior team and, when he experienced problems in obtaining a work visa - a situation with which many Saffas will be able to sympathise - the budding player went to Spain in 1999 in search of a better fit at Atlético Madrid.

His first appearance for Madrid was against Newcastle United. The twenty-two year-old Fortune, who had long been expected to make his mark as an attacking left-sided midfielder in the mould of Ryan Giggs, proved himself in this and subsequent areas, expanding into defending positions under (later Sir) Alex Ferguson.

Fortune quickly became

go training at Manchester United every day. If I stayed at home I would go crazy. I’ve played football since the age of four so I don’t know what else to do”.

Fortune’s belief in football as an agent of change is therefore absolute, which may explain why he has gone further than the baseline charity efforts expected of football stars today.

Fortune has made a substantive commitment to improve lives, not just by extending access to football, but by using sport itself to engineer social change.

The 2010 World Cup’s “Don’t Kick Off” featured Fortune and aimed to eliminate the use of football fervour as a vehicle for domestic violence. Fortune also played the thrilling Red Heart United matches in aid of charity - the equivalent of a supergroup of the greatest soccer players of the last 15 years, all on one field, with the president of Spain shaking hands in the tunnel - and, perhaps most importantly, youth development in South Africa (as Gauteng Future Champions ambassador).

The GFC is a groundbreaking initiative to bring the rising stars of international soccer - tomorrow’s champions - from places like Brazil, Mexico and Qatar to Gauteng to play against local hopefuls. This builds not only

match experience at the top level but, crucially,

professional networks. Fortune admits that he doesn’t follow South African club football as closely as he might - Kaizer Chiefs

and Orlando Pirates were boyhood heroes,

but, as Quinton explained, they’re

from Johannesburg and he’s from Cape

Town. Talking to the BBC’s Jonathan Jurejko,

an established name and went on to play in three Premiership-winning seasons (1999-2000, 2000-1 and 2002-03), yet failed to make the ten season appearances required for eligibility for a winner’s medal.

Fortune was rotated around many different positions during his 126 appearances for United, eventually racking up 10 goals for the Red Devils.

Quinton’s release from Manchester United led him to join Bolton Wanderers for the 2006-7 season, and it was here that the former jack of all trades made the left back position his own. However, the promising new defender was injured in a game against Arsenal and was, shortly thereafter, released to Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland - and, still later, Sheffield United - on trial. The next few years were peripatetic - Fortune played for a variety of different clubs, including Brescia, Tubize and Doncaster Rovers again.

The year 2012 saw Fortune return to Old Trafford, training with the reserve team there while working on his coaching badges. Quinton has expressed in a number of interviews that coaching for South Africa at national level would be his dream, and, under the firm guidance of Alex Ferguson and reserve team boss Warren Joyce, his path up the managerial ladder should be as smooth as his playing career was rocky.

In a BBC interview, Fortune was asked what he does with his days now that he has been released from professional football. He said, “I still

explained that his favourite country to play in was Spain, because of the intensity of his experience when he arrived in Madrid at 18 and encountered Iberian sunshine and food. Quinton still watches Spanish football every week.

Quinton Fortune has been hairdryered by Alex Ferguson (for jumping out of a 50-50 tackle), has overcome injury and knows a thing or two about paying your dues at the top level before breaking through to the rewards. These are all qualities that could make of Fortune Bafana Bafana’s first star player-turned-coach...

and possibly kickstart the team’s return to greatness. “That’s the plan,” Fortune told BBC Sport. “I want to gain as much knowledge and information as I can while I’m at United. Then I will try to get work in [England] and move up the ladder...but to be South Africa national team coach is my dream.”

Fortune, who played in the 1998 and 2002 World Cup finals, is convinced he will see an African country win the cup in his lifetime.

“Yes, absolutely. I believe that,” he insists, in words that prove Bafana Bafana could do a lot worse than to welcome this ex-Capetonian back as national coach.

Peter Galgut | Two-time Dentist of the Year| An extremely respected authority in the field of periodontics, Peter Galgut talks to us about his passion for dentistry, what he would change about the NHS, and whether it’s all true about ‘British teeth’

by BRETT PETZER. When did you arrive in the UK?April 1973 as a newly qualified dentist

Do you specialise in any particular field of dentistry? Is there any particular area of dentistry you find more rewarding/challenging?I am a Periodontist (Gum Specialist) practicing in North West London. Until recently I was a senior research fellow and clinical lecturer at the prestigious dental centre, the Eastman Dental Institute and Hospital (University of London)

How long have you been in your current practice?Since specialising in 1983. I qualified with an M.Sc with distinction.

Did you find that your dentistry qualifications were automatically accepted in the UK? Was there a reaccreditation process? My qualification was accepted without the need for reaccreditation all those years ago, but the rules have changed since then. Nevertheless, I requalified by simply redoing my finals at the Royal College of Surgeons so that my degree could never be held in question. This is the best route to getting a British registerable qualification even today, and saves a huge amount of extra work for qualified dentists wishing to practice in the UK, or indeed the EU.

How does wearing a uniform change your job?It doesn’t make any difference. There is a tendency for less formality than before, so fewer people are wearing white coats and other formal attire. Nevertheless dressing like a scuffy tramp is also not acceptable.

What is the biggest public misconception about your job?

That I and many other dental surgeons (and medical personnel as well,) have left the service to work under private contract because we are perceived to be simply money grabbing greedy capitalists. Most clinicians who have left the service have done so because they are simply not able or willing to drop their standards to the pitiful levels that they

would have to to remain in the Health Service. In order to provide a good and even better, or even best, service to patients, either the Health Service has to be properly funded in respect of clinicians and clinical staff or the money has to be found elsewhere. As newly qualified doctors are in effect paid less than secretaries for being responsible for people’s lives and wellbeing and being required to work long and unsociable hours, can you blame many of them who are either immigrating elsewhere, or refusing to go into clinical practice, but would rather work as secretaries or administrators in a 9-to-5 job with little or no responsibility whatsoever?

What would you change about your uniform?People want the people looking after them to look clean and efficient, and generally they are wary of people who seem to be more aware of fashion and flash, rather than efficiency and professionalism. The uniforms for medical and dental personnel have come a long way in recent years and looking in many catalogues of medical/dental attire will attest to the fact that there is a large range of very smart, crisp and modern professional ware available. I suppose there is always room for improvement, but when it becomes a fashion show and people are more concerned with protecting their clothing than their patients they lose credibility.

What has been your most rewarding day at work so far? Most days are rewarding for me not the least of which because I do the very best that I can for my patients and they appreciate it and are happy to pay for it. I have patients coming to me from all over the world to see me to save their dentitions from extraction when their local dentists and sometimes even specialist periodontists have given up and told them they need either dentures or implants, both of which very often unnecessary. When I am able to avoid loss of their natural teeth and preserve their dentitions and have patients who are delighted with the work that I have done, that is my best reward!

Are you a first-generation dentist? Does anyone else in your family work in medicine?Yes, the rest of my family are all lawyers, advocates and in South Africa judges as well.

You are the first person ever to be named Dentist of the Year twice. Was dentistry always a dream for you, or: when and why did you decide to devote yourself to this branch of medicine?I never dreamt of or had a mission to be a dentist. I am very artistic and very able to use my hands for creative purposes. As a young boy growing up in South Africa I was forbidden to do art as a subject because that was a “girls’” subject. Boys had to do metalwork and all sorts of “rough, tough, stuff”. However I was always good at building things and making things and fixing things. That meant I had to do something in which I used my hands. I was very interested in science and engineering. Putting together art, engineering, and a very high level of ability to use my hands pointed the way to something in engineering, medicine or medical science. A job like plastic surgery, or other surgical professions, medical engineering, etc seem to tick most of the boxes. However in dentistry the work is more “hands-on” and the use of different materials with different textures and physical characteristics, matching colours between natural and artificial teeth, and constructing dental restorations seem to be the best fit. Once I got to this point, dentistry seemed more and more like the right thing. However I was unsure and I took a batch of personality tests at the South African NIPR (National Institute for Personnel Research) who came to the conclusion that I was unsuited to go to university, and indeed do any profession such as dentistry, but that I would be more suited to becoming a marine biologist! With 9 university degrees behind my name, one of the most prolific research workers in my field (I have published over 120 rersearch papers) the primary author in a textbook on my speciality, periodontics, and UK national dentist of the year twice, it says something just how wrong professional advice from institutions like this really can be!

If you wish to contact Peter Galgut, email him at [email protected] or visit www.periodontal.co.uk.

established in the UK with several large to medium sized operators. However, until now, there has not

been an opportunity to join a franchised

operation.In these tough economic times,

the industry has proven to be totally recession proof. With so many businesses struggling during the Global Financial Crisis, Local Appliance Rentals Ltd actually experienced substantial growth with sales unaffected by the difficult economic times. In fact, Mr French said it was sometimes embarrassing talking about how well their business was doing whereas many other businesses had only tales of doom and gloom.

Mr French says that the rapid growth that Local Appliance Rentals Ltd has achieved in less than three years is only possible because of the massive performance that is being achieved from their franchisees.

Mr French comments, “Many of our franchisees have voted with their cheque books, with twelve of our franchisees having purchased multiple territories and another 15 having upgraded their territories to the next level as they have decided to expand their businesses.”

Mr French said that just recently they have even had a staff member who has left their role at head office to become a franchisee. As he says, “You can’t get a better endorsement of the business than that.”

The majority of franchisees work from home and love the flexibility that this gives them and the fact that it is a business that only operates Monday to Friday 9am-5pm with no nights, weekends or public holidays.

Popular Aussie franchise hits UK| Following great success in Australia and New Zealand, Local Appliance Rentals Ltd is now inviting new franchisees to join them in growing the business in Britain.

Advertorial

LOCAL Appliance Rentals Ltd is an established franchise with over 80 franchisees in Australia and New Zealand. They have achieved this outstanding result in less than three years of operations. They are now proud to announce that they have recently appointed a master franchisee for the London region alone.

However, as founder and CEO Kenneth French points out “Prior to starting our franchise operation, we had been running Local Appliance Rentals for many years and had a very profitable business model that we wanted to share with others.”

Local Appliance Rentals Ltd rents a large range of household appliances to consumers including fridges, washing machines, flat screen TVs, laptops, smart phones and furniture. The rental term is usually over two years and the customer is able to own the product at the end of the rental term through a zero pound ‘gift-it’ offer.

The rental industry is well

This is in stark contrast to so many other business models where owners are working long hours, 7 days a week.

“With a Local Appliance Rentals Ltd franchise, the hours that you work are flexible and there are many franchises operated by women who can run the business from home but can also pick up the kids from school,” says Mr French.

One of the features of this franchise is the online software system called SAFRA. This custom software is used to run the entire business from producing contracts, to ordering goods, keeping track of payments and customers and making your tax simple and easy to calculate at the end of the year.

Launching in June at the British Franchise Exhibition in Manchester, potential franchisees had an opportunity to meet the team including the International Sales Director Mr Sacha Caller. Mr Caller is himself a multi-unit franchisee with several franchises in and around Melbourne that are already running successfully under his management.

“We are looking for keen motivated franchisees in all areas of the UK but we also have several opportunities for master franchisees for the more experienced operator,” Mr Caller said.

Mr Caller says that they are making a special UK launch offer of 2 territories for the price of 1 for the first five franchisees.

South African Rand top of the Emerging Market Currenciesby MONIQUE CHAPMANThe South African Rand was the top gainer this week among emerging-market currencies, as it caught up with gains seen in other asset classes earlier in the week. The Rand started the week at 9.98 to the US Dollar and 15.08 to the British pound, coming to rest at 9.86 and 15.06 respectively.

The Euro Zone came back into the spotlight last week at the G20 summit held in Moscow.

This is partly a result of Moody’s upgrading of the US sovereign ratings outlook from negative to neutral, justifying the approach taken by the US authorities regarding quantitative

easing. Market sentiment shows that the bleak outlook for Europe remains unchanged with many more reforms needed.

In the week ahead analysts are will be looking for news from the US commodities regulator. The regulator had placed the banks on notice last week as it was planning a full investigation into their operations related to the commodities market. This implies that there is more than mere suspicion that some of the largest banks may be manipulating the market to some degree. Traders are also awaiting the Japanese Cabinet Office Monthly Economic report.

Alleged Mugabe plot to assassinate Zuma revealed in leaked paper| Robert Mugabe has allegedly hired a Lebanese murder squad to carry out an assassination of Jacob Zuma and South African diplomat Lindiwe Zulu, to make it look like an accident.

by PAULA BARANOWSKA ZIMBABWE‘S president Robert Mugabe has reportedly planned to have his South African counterpart Jacob Zuma killed by a Lebanese murder squad, along with top diplomat Lindiwe Zulu, according to a document seen by The Guardian.

The newspaper said however, that it was not able verify the report as genuine, and it could also be a hoax.

The typed two-page document is dated 2 July 2013. It provides a lot of details, but at times its language is full of grammatical and spelling mistakes. The author is unknown.

Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party described the news as a “hogwash” and a “typical setup,” but the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said this information should be taken seriously.

In a paragraph headed “Lebonese assasins” (sic) the report said, “On Monday this week Mugabe hired six Lebanese nationals to try and assassinate Lindiwe Zulu, who is Zuma’s advisor. The six met clandestinely with Mugabe yesterday to be briefed by him on the details of their mission … The six were told they must not concentrate on Zulu only, but should also pay attention to Zuma himself, and if they get a chance to do so they must assassinate him as well – but everything must appear as an accident.”

The report continues, “Mugabe promised the six Lebonese [sic] an undisclosed fortune in cash if they

succeed in getting rid of the two who [sic] South Africa senior officials who are giving him a lot of trouble. Names of the six could not be established, but they entered into the country via Zambia in the last few days, where they had previously held a close meeting with [president] Michael Sata before travelling into Zimbabwe.”

Allegations come after Zimbabwe’s authorities fiercely criticised Zulu when she suggested it would be beneficial for the country to postpone the Zimbabwean elections by a month. Mugabe called her “some stupid, idiotic woman,” and said she should take care of South Africa’s issues.

Zanu-PF Rugare Gumbo commented, “To be frank with you, it’s all rubbish and hogwash to think a head of state like president Mugabe would set up something like that. We have a disagreement with Lindiwe Zulu but it would not go to that extent.”

Asked about the alleged threat to Zuma, he said, “You should not take it seriously. It’s a typical set-up in Zimbabwe to try and cause some confusion before the election because we are going ahead with our election according to our laws whether they like it or not.”

Douglas Mwonzora, the MDC’s spokesperson, said that the international community “must take these assassination allegations seriously,” but admitted that his party could not confirm the authenticity of the report.

Roy Bennett, the exiled MDC

treasurer-general, was convinced the document was credible. “It comes from reliable and trustworthy sources within the heart of the CIO [Central Intelligence Organisation]. It is a stark reminder of the full horrific extent that Robert Mugabe is prepared to go in order to hang on to power and avenge his critics,” he said.

This is not the first time Zimbabwean government faces accusations of carrying out clandestine operations and assassinations.

South Africa’s Mail & Guardian newspaper recently published a list of nine Zimbabwean politicians who have died in mysterious car crashes over the years. Hebert Chitepo was killed in March 1975 by a car bomb in Lusaka. Solomon Mujuru died reportedly in a fire, in 2011, but the director of Zimbabwe’s forensic science laboratory, Birthwell Mutandiro, said in his report that there were indications that Mujuru had died before the fire spread to the room in which his body was found. The family did not get permission for exhumation and second postmortem examination.

Last month Edward Chindori-Chininga, the outspoken chairperson of a parliamentary committee that had just released a highly critical report on the diamond industry, also had a fatal car accident.

Baba Jukwa, an anonymous insider, regularly posts on his/her Facebook page information about plots planned by the Zimbabwean government. The blogger wrote that Chindori-Chininga was targeted before his accident.

by MIKE ABROMOWITZ FROM 02TOUCHTO thank all of our hard working In2Touch team organisers and to celebrate In2Touch’s 10th year in the UK, we are throwing a Free Boat Cruise Party for Spring and Summer team organisers (plus, one guest each).

Season in, season out, the team organisers never cease to amaze here at In2Touch with all the time, effort and hard work put into getting their teams up and running each season.

Departing from Tower Pier we’ll see London from a different view.

Get set for an amazing night cruising down the Thames; with a DJ and cash-bar, the night is sure to go off with a bang.

But amazingly enough, the Boat Party won’t be the biggest social event of the year.

Come August 31st, King George’s Park will be sporting quite an international look.

The 6th annual In2Touch Social Touch Rugby World Cup is set to rock the Putney/Wandsworth pitches!

With teams having to dress to impress, by representing the individual countries they are given.

Who could think of a better way to spend a Saturday, than seeing Samoa verses Kazakhstan or Japan verses South Africa?

And the action won’t stop once the games have! That’s right, there is an after party.

We have organised our very own Piano Man playing ‘Edinburgh Fingers Style’ tunes from 7:30pm until 11pm followed by a DJ to see

off the night into the late hours! All teams, from beginners to

intermediate, are very welcome and to register a team you need to go to www.in2trouch.com/uk or e-mail [email protected] for more information.

“The best thing about Touch Rugby here in London is that it’s not about having people pay, play and then that’s it. This season they have really taken care of us – touch isn’t just a sport, it’s a community.”

This was a quote directly from one of our players on our social media and one we really appreciate.

The sport isn’t the only thing we are concerned about, but creating an all-around brilliant atmosphere.

With our summer season almost mid-way, we have more exciting events as well as the autumn leagues to continue throughout the rest of 2013.

For more information or if you would like to register for an O2 Touch league or competition, go to www.in2touch.com/uk or e-mail [email protected]

Free touch boat cruise party| With another cracking week of touch going off without a hitch, it seems like a great time to announce some big news!

MICKEY ARTHUR CHANGES TUNE, SUES CRICKET AUSTRALIAby PAULA BARANOWSKASOUTH Africa’s Mickey Arthur, Australia’s first foreign national cricket coach, is seeking up to $4 million in compensation, or his job back, from Cricket Australia (CA), saying that he was racially discriminated against.

Arthur was fired last month before the Ashes series after CA said he failed to act against declining standards of discipline in the team, and was replaced by former Australia Test batsman Darren Lehmann.

In June, Arthur said that he was “very disappointed with how this has all ended” but admitted that “the team hasn’t exactly been completely galvanised under my leadership and our performances have been inconsistent.”

He philosphically stated, “We need the team to be absolutely unified if we’re to have any chance of beating the English”.

However he has since claimed he was discriminated against because he was from South Africa and did not understand the Australian way.

According to court documents, seen by network TV station Seven, Arthur is seeking compensation to the end of his 2015 contract.

His salary was reportedly $400,000 per year plus around $200,000 a year in bonuses.

| After initially saying Cricket Australia needs to do what’s best for the team, South African coach Mickey Arthur decides to sue them for racial discrimination. Arthur is demanding compensation to the end of his AUD 400,000

In the documents submitted to the court in Melbourne, Arthur has also claimed that Australian captain Michael Clarke called former vice-captain Shane Watson a ‘cancer’ in the team.

Arthur said he was the “meat in the sandwich” in a feud between Clarke and Watson.

“We’re disappointed it has come to this, but Cricket Australia is confident in its position on this matter and I’m sure it will get resolved in an appropriate fashion,” said Dean Kino, CA’s lawyer.

Arthur guided Australia to 10 wins, six losses and three draws since his appointment in

November 2011, but he polarised public opinion when he dropped four players, including then vice-captain Watson, for the third Test in India for failing to complete written reports on their individual contributions to the team’s performance, which was quickly dubbed “Homeworkgate.”

He was the first foreigner to take charge of Australia when he was appointed in 2011 and his contract had been due to run until the end of the 2015 World Cup.

Arthur played cricket in South Africa at a domestic level from 1986 to 2001, and coached the South African national team from 2005 to 2010.
