Encouragement. To the person who is struggling to understand what it means to follow Christ offer encourage- ment. To the person who is trying to find his or her place in service offer encour- agement. To the person who is wrestling with God’s call in his or her life, possibly even a call to full-time ministry offer encouragement. To the person with a new idea for ministry offer encouragement. In defining what it means to be the Body of Christ, Paul says, Therefore encourage one another and build each other up…” (1 Thessalonians 5:11) May the spirit of en- couragement prevail in our church. Bishop Lawson Bryan’s challenge to the churches of the South Georgia Conference over the last couple of years has been for us to be “Alive Together in Christ.” Last Saturday almost 70 members of our church leadership gathered for “A Day of Visioning and Planning.” We celebrated the many ways God has blessed our church, it’s ministries, and our people. We also took the opportunity to look ahead and to prayerfully consider a renewed vision for our church and all that God is calling to do. During the morning it became obvious that our church exemplifies what it means to be “Alive together in Christ!”
This Sunday the sermon will be different. I will take the opportunity to celebrate how God is at work in our church, to report on a few of the ideas that came out of the day of planning, and to share what this means to us, the body of Christ at St. Simons UMC, as we move forward in ministry together in 2019.
The apostle Paul reminds us that we have been given a variety of gifts to build up each other, build up the church and build up the kingdom of God. No single gift is any more important or necessary than the other; our combined gifts are needed to grow our church and in our personal discipleship.
The people who have made the biggest difference in my life have been the encour- agers. People who have been there to tell me, “You can do it”, “Give it a try”, “Yes, that’s a great idea”, “I believe in you”, or “Don’t give up.” Maybe you can recall simi- lar words being shared with you and how they gave you the nudge you needed to believe in yourself.
Bishop Robert Schnaze in his book, “Just Say Yes”, reminds us that “real encourage- ment means giving someone the strength to change. It confirms people in their call- ings and ministries. Real encouragement means helping people to say “Yes” to God.”
The mission of our church is, “To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transfor- mation of St. Simons Island and the world.” What is one of the best ways to grow in our discipleship and to help other grow in theirs? Encouragement. To the person who is struggling to understand what it means to follow Christ – offer encourage- ment. To the person who is trying to find his or her place in service – offer encour- agement. To the person who is wrestling with God’s call in his or her life, possibly even a call to full-time ministry – offer encouragement. To the person with a new idea for ministry – offer encouragement.
In defining what it means to be the Body of Christ, Paul says, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up…” (1 Thessalonians 5:11) May the spirit of en- couragement prevail in our church. May it be known throughout our community that St. Simons UMC is a church that says, “Yes” to God; a church that is alive together in Christ!

Our sympathy is extended to Chuck and Barbara Milliken for the loss of their nephew, Robert Tressler, on January 8, 2019 in Detroit, MI.
The St. Simons United Methodist Women ask you to join us at the beginning of this new year in being more aware of loving and caring for our home, our planet, Earth. One of our goals this year is for each of us, consciously and actively, to do something on a daily basis that will help sustain our earth and express our concern for the health of our planet.
To help us all be more aware of the small things we can do daily that will help to maintain our planet’s health, the UMW will be offering a “healthy planet” tip each month.
It is our hope that you will incorporate each of these tips into your daily lives for the health of our planet.
The UMW January “Healthy Planet Tip” is: When turning on the faucet for hot water, instead of letting that water run down the drain, save the cold water coming out of the tap before the hot water arrives by having a jug, pitcher, bottle, or other container stored nearby. The water can run into this container until it becomes hot. Use the cold water to water flowers or shrubs, put in pets’ water bowl, and any number of household uses.
