The Song of Mary

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel, for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

The promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as It was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Book of Common Prayer Page 91

John Beeman I was born and raised in East Grand Rapids, Michi-gan, graduated from Cor-nell University in 1963 with a BA in Speech and Drama and earned a MBA from Stanford University

in 1965 majoring in Finance. I met my wife, San-dra, at Cornell and we were married soon after we graduated. We have two daughters and five grandchildren and they and their families live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I joined Citibank in New York in 1965 and worked in Corporate Banking at the head office until 1978 when we transferred overseas. For the next 25 years we lived in Germany, Saudi Ara-bia, Pakistan, South Korea, China and Vietnam, all with Citibank, until we retired in 2003. We have a summer home in Roxbury, CT and have been residents of Naples since December 2004. Both Sandra and I are life-long Episcopalians. Our first service at Trinity was Easter Sunday 2005 and we knew right away this was the church for us. The fellowship, outreach pro-grams, the many other activities and especially the ministry are very important to my life and I have been an active supporter. Currently I am a Chalice Bearer at Trinity and most honored to be asked to serve on the Vestry.

Jane Francoeur

As a ―cradle Episco-palian‖ the church has always been a large part of my life. I am a native of Shak-er Heights, Ohio and grew up worshipping at Christ Church. After college and marrying my husband of almost 50 years (!!) at St. Bar-tholomew’s in New York City, we settled in Westport, CT and moved to Naples in 1972 with our three small children.

Trinity has shaped the lives of our entire family. Our daughter attended nursery school at Trinity and sang in the youth choir. Our two sons both served as acolytes. Three of our 5 grandsons were christened here. My hus-band, Philip, has served as a lector and chalice bearer for thirty years and served on the vestry. As for me, along with the usual church activi-ties such as chair of the Christmas Bazaar, co-chair of the Antiques Show, small group mem-ber and lector, I have had a fascinating and very different perspective of Trinity through my work over the years in the refurbishing, re-decorating, and reconfiguring of the church and parish hall. I have been working as an in-terior designer for over 35 years and my special gift to the church I love so much has been to help redecorate practically every part of the church and parish hall. My strangest project was to hand paint great swaths of faux terrazzo when we tore up the carpeting in the library and conference room. In these ways I have been able to give back a small part of the many gifts Trinity has given me.

To be asked to serve once again on the vestry is not only a wonderful honor and privi-lege but also another chance to give back to Trinity for all that it has provided me and my family. I know that it will enrich my life as a Christian in so many more and new ways.

Mark Goebel I am a life-long Epis-copalian raised in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan belonging to Christ Church Cranbrook my entire early life. I attended the United States Air

Force Academy, DePauw University, and The Ross School of Business at the University of Mich-igan where I earned my MBA in finance. From there I started with Accenture in its early days and retired twenty five years later as a Managing Director. What is truly important however is I met my wonderful wife and best friend Nan while attending DePauw together and we first visited Nan's parents in Naples our sophomore year some thirty five years ago. I am truly blessed with a wonderful wife and family and friends. Nan and I have two great sons Blake and David, both recently engaged to be married this coming year.

Trinity-by-the-Cove has meant so much to me and my family during our years in Naples. I serve as Lector and Chalice bearer and also serve on the finance committee. It was at Trinity I first started working at Habitat for Humanity during one of our out reach projects where I am now the vice president of the Habitat Collier. You will know the Habitat homes I work on because I write Matthew 7:24 on the inside of each one, re-minding me to build my own house on the rock of faith in the good Lord.

Nan and I co-founded the Naples Best Addresses Team at Coldwell Banker and work together as partners in growing our real estate business together.

It would truly be an honor to serve on our Vestry—to better serve and help our wonderful parish. Peace be with each of you.

Looking Ahead Our Ministry to

Youth, Families and Young Trinitarians

Evening Prayer at the Beach Our Youth, Max McDonnell, Jane Gray, and Chris-tian Warner led the Daily Office of Evening Prayer at the Beach at the end of November. As the sun set, we prayed and sang hymns to God. Mike McDonnell and Russell Tuff accompanied our voic-es on guitar. Over 40 parishioners of all ages gathered for this wonderful service of prayer. If you’re interested in the church offering a beach ser-vice in the coming months, please contact Fr. Ed-ward.

Christmas Cookie Sunday

Children, youth and parishioners of all ages deco-rated Christmas Cookies on the Third Sunday of Advent. It was a wonderful event to build the expectancy and excitement of Jesus’ coming on Christmas and to experience the joy of intergenera-tional Christian fellowship at Trinity-by-the-Cove. The Baker’s Dozen (a group of Trinitarians who ac-cepted Fr. Edward’s challenge to bake 700 cookies) gathered the two Saturdays before in the church kitchen to prepare for the day.

Thank you to the Baker’s Dozen for their ministry of fellowship and fun: Gail Baily, Polly Butler, Barbara Chur, Jo Faulmann, Diana Harrison. Sharon Julian, Anne Lewallen, Susan LaPointe, Donald Stitt, Cook-ie Spears, and Sally Weir.

Christmas Pageant

Children gathered on Christmas Eve to proclaim the Nativity of Jesus. Some served as lectors, others as angels, some as shepherds and of course, Mary and Joseph!

Confirmation Forums for Youth

The next confirmation forum is on January 8th during formation hour. We’ll take up as our top-ic the apostle’s teaching, fellowship and prayers. All youth (grades 6-12) and their parents should plan on participating.

Trinity-by-the-Cove offers Confirmation Forums for Youth and their Parents. In the first Forum Fr.

Edward spoke about what it means to renounce evil (one of the vows we make when we are bap-tized and reaffirm when we are confirmed). The second forum had Baptism as its topic. The Youth were introduced to terms like eschatology and Trinity and learned about the liturgy of Baptism. The next forum helped guide youth on using the Bible as a way to figure out how to service Christ. These forums are mandatory for all youth who wish to be confirmed or go on pil-grimage.

Fourth Annual Trinity-by-the-Cove Golf Tournament Benefiting the Spring 2012 Youth Pilgrimage

The Fourth Annual Golf Tournament at the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Resort benefiting the youth pilgrimage was held in December. We raised over $5000 for Youth to go on pilgrimage to Scotland and Northern England. They will spend Holy Week 2012 (March 30-April 8) taking in the sights and history of the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, York Minster, Durham Cathedral and Edinburgh. The Tournament was a Scram-ble and there was an awards luncheon following. Winners were many and included Fr. Edward in a miraculous hit that got an award for closest to the hole! Education for Ministry

EfM Organizational meeting on Sunday, February 12th

in the Family Room from 9:30 - 10:15

This is not preparation for ordained ministry!

This year eight Trinitarians continued and six began the Education for Ministry program spon-sored by Sewanee Seminary. The curriculum includes study of the Old Testament (year one); study of the New Testament (year two); Church History (year three) and Creeds and Philoso-phies (year four). EfM is for laity who want a deeper understanding in thinking theologically and relating this thinking to everyday life. What is EfM? The small group is the nucleus of the Education for Ministry program. A group consists of six to twelve participants and a trained mentor who meet weekly over the course of nine months. The meetings are usually three hours in length plus preparation time for the weekly class. Through study, prayer, and reflection, EfM groups move toward a new understanding of the full-ness of God's kingdom. This process can be illustrated by a two-rail fence. One rail is the Chris-tian tradition. The other is the collective experience of the group's members. The rails are linked by fence posts which represent the sessions where life and study meet. The fence is grounded in the soil of regular worship which is vital to the life of the group. Participants have weekly assignments to study with the help of resource guides. Students are re-sponsible for setting their own learning goals. They spend a minimum of two hours in study and preparation each week. In the seminars members have an opportunity to share their insights and discoveries as well as to discuss questions which the study materials raise for them. Through dis-cussion and guided reflection, the small group provides an opportunity to deepen understanding of the reading materials. More important is the development of skills in theological reflection. The goal is to learn to think theologically. By examining your own beliefs and relationship to our culture and the tradition of our Christian faith, you can learn what it means to be effective laity in the world. In coming to terms with the notion that everything we do has potential for manifesting the love of Christ, we discover that our ministry is at hand wherever we turn. Once the number of new members is established, the meeting day and time of week will be set. The cost of the course is $300. February 12th is EfM Sunday. The EfM class will host the 9:00 coffee hour and be available to answer questions you may have.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Page 5 January, 2012

Around the Parish /Looking Ahead

And so we ask the children, I wonder what this Great Light looks like when it is shining in our lives, what do people see? Tatiana says we see kindness. Drew listens and prays. ―I shine the Light of Jesus when I pray for other people‖ says Lauryn. If someone is mean, Emma prays for them instead of being mean back. The Light of Jesus shines in Jordan when she does her best in school. Colin, a boy scout, takes care of na-ture especially when he is camping. Even our youngest sheep understand that Je-sus’ Light shines when they help others. Will helps with the laundry. Callie shares her toys and feeds the dog. Howard gets help for his friend who gets hurt, and Katherine is helpful with the dishes. I wonder, how do we receive this Great Light? When does this Light comes into our lives? Linda Gemmer, Director Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Isaiah, a prophet from long ago, before Jesus was born, told us ―The People who walk in darkness have seen a Great Light.‖ On Sunday, we ask the children what is this Great Light? Without hesitation they say Jesus, God. It is no wonder, throughout the infancy narratives, the stories of Jesus’ birth; we see the light of Christ that has come into the World. ■ The glory of the Lord shone through

the angels.

■ A shining star led the shepherds and the

wise men to where Jesus lay.

■ When Jesus was presented in the Temple,

Simeon praised God saying, ― He is a light

to reveal God to the nations, and he is the

glory of your people Israel!"

Ahhh a new beginning, just like the first day of creation, ―Let there be Light!‖ Do we think that Jesus intended to keep the light to himself? No, of course not. He desired that Light to spread over the entire earth. Light continues to shine in the atrium when our children talk about what this means in their life. Yes, the Great Light is Jesus! I wonder, what is the darkness? One child names it as badness, another says evil, Colin names it as Satan. We need the Light of Jesus to shine in our life don’t we? Calvin replies, ―I already see it in my mind!‖

Wednesday Night Out The Undiscovered Country – Our Life to Come

Professor Peter S. Hawkins, Yale University February 1st

Dinner at 6:00 and presentation at 6:45

I t is an honor to have Professor Peter Hawkins with us on February 1st for our Winter

Wednesday Night Out. He asks the question, ―Why do most contemporary Christians pull a blank when it comes to imagining a life with God after death?‖ Although the Bible is largely silent on the issue, our world is completely riveted by the up-to-date visions of heaven and hell that stock bookstore shelves and are found every-where on the Internet. But what are believers to think and to say about the "undiscovered country" that is the life to come—from the pulpit, at the hospital, or in our daily lives?

Peter Hawkins offers a fresh way to pose these questions, along with an imaginative frame-work for answering them. He challenges all of us, not just preachers, to think of Dante's drama of the afterlife—heaven, hell and purgatory—as a true story describing the lives we are living now. To this end Hawkins uses the Divine Comedy to help us imagine what happens when we die as he works his way through Christian tradition, con-temporary culture, a rich array of literature, and his own personal experience.

It will be helpful (not a requirement) to read Peter’s book, Undiscovered Country before attend-ing the presentation. Books are available in the Parish Hall for $12.00. Contact Alice Sadler, Associate Rector if childcare is needed. Cost of dinner is $10.00.

Guest Preacher January 15th

Many Episcopalians do not know that future clergypersons are responsible for paying their way through seminary. Alt-hough some Dioceses provide good sup-port, many clergy take out student loans to go to seminary. SIM is the only organiza-tion in The Episcopal Church raising funds on a national basis for Episcopal seminarian support. Since 1857 SIM (Society for the In-crease of Ministry) has awarded over $6 mil-lion to almost 5000 women and men study-ing to become Episcopal priests, including Fr. Michael and Fr. Edward. Currently 26% of Episcopal bishops were recipients of one or more SIM grants On January 15th, we welcome Tom Moore, Executive Director of SIM. Tom will offer reflections at liturgies on January 15th about ministry and SIM. Tom is the first non-priest Executive Director since SIM’s founding in 1857. A graduate of the Univer-sity of Virginia with a MBA from Emory University, Tom became a CPA with a Ten-nessee firm before holding financial execu-tive positions in the corporate world and in venture capital. He transitioned to the not-for-profit world in 1988 at Massachusetts General Hospital where he managed fi-nancings for several high profile projects and joint ventures.

Porcelain Creche

N ext time you are in the Parish Hall, take a moment and look at the beautiful porcelain crèche on the

large credenza at the north end of the hall. Laurie and Tony Shull had this crèche as their own for many years and have donated it to the church for our use. It really is rather spectacular and the vestry and clergy thank Laurie and Tony for their kind generosity.

Office Staff and Clergy

We offer our joint thanks to all parishioners who so very kindly dropped off home made sweets and goodies to the church office.

We enjoyed it all!

I t is a pleasure to have The Rev. Jess Petty to lead one of our Sunday Morn-

ing Forums. Jess has served at Trinity-by-the-Cove several times as interim rector and associate interim rector. Jess’ minis-try includes time in Central America in El Salvador and Panama. He served as Rector in the Diocese of Ohio and as an interim priest in Kansas City and in our diocese of Southwest Florida (St. Peter’s Cathedral, Tampa; St. John’s, Tampa; Ascension and St. John’s, Clearwater; St. Hilary’s, Ft. Myers; Jess and his wife Gillian live in Na-ples and Marblehead, MA. They have four children and three grandchildren. In reading Jesus Through Middle East-ern Eyes, author Ken Bailey will lead us on a kaleidoscopic study of Jesus throughout the four Gospels. While Bai-ley examines the life and ministry of Jesus with attention to the Lord's Prayer, the Beatitudes, Jesus' relationship to women, and especially Jesus' parables our focus will be on Jesus’ ministry and selected parables. Through it all, Bailey employs his trademark expertise as a master of Mid-dle Eastern culture to lead you into a deeper understanding of the person and significance of Jesus within his own cultural context. With a sure but gentle hand, Bailey lifts away the obscuring layers of modern Western interpretation

to reveal Jesus in the light of his actual his-torical and cultural setting. About the Author – Dr. Kenneth Bailey After undergraduate and seminary studies, Dr. Bailey completed degrees in Arabic Language and Literature, Systematic Theol-ogy and a doctorate in New Testament. T he Ronald McDonald Care Mobile is a mo-bile dental/medical unit that travels

around the county year round to locations where low income children/families live or are active such as schools, day care centers, pre-schools, sports fields, and summer camps. It takes medical screening services to where the children are. Use of the vehicle is provided by Ronald McDonald House Charities, but the ser-vice providers, and supplies are the responsibil-ity of CHS Healthcare. CHS Healthcare is a not-for profit safety-net health care provider headquartered in Immoka-lee. They provide basic primary and preventa-tive medical and dental care. Originally found-ed in 1977 to improve the health of migrant and seasonal farm workers, they now have clinics in Immokalee, Golden Gate, Marco, Naples, and the Care Mobile goes all over the County.

T he Care Mobile provides medical, vision, and dental screenings, provides education

and materials on healthy lifestyles, including toothbrushes, floss, and basic supplies. When needed, patients are connected to affordable and accepting pediatricians, ophthalmologists, or dentists for care. There is also follow-up with families to help them overcome the obstacles to accessing healthcare, such as language barriers, lack of transportation, and limited funds or no health insurance. In 2010 Trinity helped fund eye exams and glasses for children without other resources who were identified through the Care Mobile and would otherwise have gone without them. Clear vision is critical for quality of life and school work. Trinity, through the Community Grants Commission, has funded various needs of the Care Mobile over several years. Joyce Fletcher Chair

FOCUS ON FAITH Begins January 15 at 12:30

in the Conference Room What is Focus on Faith?

Focus on Faith is a small group experience to learn more about the Episcopal Church and its beliefs. It is also a time to connect with others in our Christian journey. The clergy will be the speakers for the weekly topics.

Questions and Answers about Focus on Faith

Who is invited to Focus on Faith?

• Anyone who is considering joining the Episcopal Church

• Anyone raised in another denomination • Anyone wanting to learn more about the Episcopal church • Any long time Episcopalians who'd like a refresher course • Any Episcopalians who find themselves at a

time in their lives where they would like to renew their Baptismal vows

Do you have to promise to make a commit-ment or join the Church if you come? No. Focus on Faith is a place to inquire and explore.

If you want to join the Church, how do you do that? If you have not been baptized, we ask you to participate in Focus on Faith. Participants are pre-pared from January to Easter with Baptism at the Easter Vigil. Anyone already baptized, may con-tact Judy Fratus (239) 262-6581 ext. 213 to have your letter of membership transferred from your former parish.

If you have already been baptized and want to be confirmed, can you attend Focus on Faith? Yes. Baptized adults who are not yet confirmed may join the program that leads to Confirmation when Bishop Smith makes his visit to Trinity

What if you are already baptized and con-firmed? Focus on Faith is also a means for renewal of our

Christian faith and some people go through the program for this purpose. Those who wish to renew their baptismal vows with laying on of hands by Bishop Smith at our parish visita-tion on April 29 may also participate.

Please contact Mother Alice ([email protected] or 262-6581 ext. 206) if you are interested in joining the program.

A message from our Parish Counselor on the New Year

T here’s something about the New Year that spurs fantasies of self reform. Though we

may be physically exhausted, emotionally de-pleted and at least five pounds heavier than before the Holiday Barrage began, the idea of a brand New Year usually fills our spirits with optimism and gives us a remarkable ability to bounce back and start anew with good inten-tions.

Unfortunately, even with the best inten-tions, New Year’s resolutions are often a ―set up‖ for failure. It’s easy to become plagued with guilt when we don’t live up to our idealis-tic and unrealistic goals. To quote Mark Twain, ―New Year’s day… is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving the road to hell with them as usual.‖

At Trinity-by-the-Cove we offer a multi-tude of opportunities for personal and spiritual growth. This January we are blessed to have the Rev. Scott Stoner and his wife Holly, creators of The Living Compass return. They will be here to kick off our second session of The Living Compass which begins January 22ndand facilitate a Wednesday Night Out. The adult formation that day should be interesting to those of you who attended the fall as well as newcomers to the program.

I n order to implement the change we need to better serve God with our heart, soul, mind

and strength, the Stoners developed steps for change using the acronym FAITH. We want to initiate change by using steps that are Focused, Action- Oriented, Inspired, Time-specific, and Heartfelt and Honest.

If you want to make improvements in your life and feel that counseling or coaching may help, please call me. Each parishioner and family member is entitled to 4 complimentary, confidential visits with me per year. And, as always, I welcome your ideas and feedback. Ellen Harris

Coming this month

January 11th at noon in the Parish Hall

Dr. Caroline Cederquist Living Longer and Living Better"

By popular request, Dr. Caroline Cederquist returns to Trinity-by-the-Cove as the speaker for our January Wellness Luncheon. Her topic is Living Longer and Living Better‖. Dr. Cederquist will discuss where we should focus our time and attention for our best health. Included in her talk will be:

avoiding toxins, weight gain and hormone changes, the challenge of maintaining a normal weight, the four most common causes of death, muscle loss, exercise, controversies over vitamins and recom-mendations about how to eat, move and live to ad-dress these issues. Dr. Caroline Cederquist is the founder and medical director of the Cederquist Medical Well-ness Center in Naples, Florida, a comprehensive weight management and preventive medicine clinic devoted to addressing the special medical, psycho-logical and life issues of those struggling with nutri-tion and weight issues. Upon being awarded her M.D. in 1991, Dr. Cederquist was honored with the national Upjohn Achievement Award for Outstanding Qualities in a Physician. She undertook her family practice in-ternship at Fairfax Hospital, before going on to be appointed academic chief resident at the Fairfax Family Practice, and subsequently earned her board certification in family practice. Her clinical work with patients of all ages gave her a comprehensive view of Americans’ health issues, and she observed that too many of the problems faced by her patients were directly related to their weight. This inspired her particular interest in bariatrics, the specialty of medical weight management. She remains one of about 250 physicians in the nation to have achieved board certification in the field. Dr. Cederquist is the medical director of Bistro MD, a national home diet delivery company which she started with her husband and the proud mother of three daughters and one son. Caroline and her family are members of Trinity.

Scott & Holly Stoner Vivit Trinity

I n mid-January the Rev. Dr. Scott Stoner and his wife Holly Stoner, the creators of the Living Compass Faith and Wellness

Ministry, will be with us again and we hope many of you will be able to meet them at some time during their visit. You may remem-ber that Scott and Holly were with us for a week last March when they first introduced our parish to their new ministry.

Scott has been an Episcopal priest for thirty years serving parishes as a rector, interim rector and assisting priest primarily in the Diocese of Milwaukee. He is also a pastoral counselor and in 2008 be-came founding director of the Samaritan Family Wellness Foundation in Milwaukee. Holly is a former teacher of 30 years and is now a family therapist. She serves as the director of family life programing at the Samaritan Family Wellness Foundation. Out of their mutual passion for helping individuals and families live happier, more Christ-centered lives they have created the Living Compass Faith and Well-ness ministry which they will continue to share with us during their visit. Both life-long Episcopalians, Scott and Holly are now excited to be introducing the Living Com-

pass ministry to Episcopal churches across the country. This is because they believe in the powerful role that the Church plays in supporting individuals, couples and families in their journeys toward wholeness and wellness. They believe in the power of congregations to provide and promote whole-ness and wellness to their members as they have seen it in parishes all their lives. Trinity-by-the-Cove is one of the first churches to embrace this ministry and they are excited to be with us to see how it is going and to tell us more about their dream. A foundational scripture for this ministry is: ―Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, just as it is well with your soul.‖ (III John 2) Living Compass is based on the premise that wellness and wholeness must be grounded and manifested in our relationships with God, and with one another. We need the support of others to attain and maintain our wellness and wholeness--we cannot make this journey alone. Churches are the ideal place to work on our indi-vidual and family wellness as we have community to support one another and as God desires it for us!

Scott and Holly, along with Ellen Harris, will lead the Adult Formation Class at 10:10 on Sunday,

January 22 as they help us kick off a new six week Living Compass Faith and Wellness Class. Ellen led this class in the Fall and it was a great success. Even if you took it in the Fall, please feel free to join us again as there is always more to learn when it comes to being well with our heart, soul, strength and mind. Scott will also preach about faith and wellness at our three Sunday services on January 22.

On January 25th, Scott and Holly will be our speakers for our Wednesday Night Out program. They will offer a fun and informative session entitled, ―Change Is Inevitable, Growth Is Optional.‖ They will introduce us to a very important concept for turning change into growth, whether it be for individuals, couples, families or organizations.

Watch for the various rosters to participate in these opportunities with Scott and Holly in January.

Ephesians – Key to Successful Living

O ur world is unstable, full of uncertainty even for the most established free society.

How do we find stability in our world today? What perspectives allow us to be triumphant rather than defeated amid the circumstances of life? Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians gives us some answers to these questions.

The focus of the study and reflection in-clude our relationship with God, how to live life in the real world as God’s people and being se-

cure and successful in any situation. If you need child care in order to attend, it will be provided by the church. Please contact Alice Sadler if you are interested in this class: 262-6581, ext 206.
