All of these new ideas are designed to help our swimmers become technically proficient while having a lot of fun. I will have a chance to talk a little more about the program and what parents can expect this season at our upcoming Black and Purple meet. I hope most of you will be there, it is always a fun event. First off, I would like to welcome back all of our returning swimmers and parents. Last year was an in-credible season for us with many of our performances the best in club history. I am quite sure that you are as excited as I am to start the 2010-2011 season. Secondly, I would like to welcome all the new swimmers and parents that have decided to be part of one of the strongest swim clubs in Canada. I know that as a Canadian we are supposed to be a little more humble than that but I know first hand how hard the climb has been over the past few years to get here. So it is out of pride, not ego, that I refer to our current national status. I have just spent the past weekend with our coaches for our pre-season staff training. It was a weekend of planning, learning and generating ideas on how to move from #5 in Canada to #1. This year's staff training was a little different from past years and I personally feel we are even better prepared than at anytime in our past and even more focused on making Manta athletes the best technical swimmers in the country. For all our swimmers you will see some positive and exciting additions to the program, from award certificates to the monthly Head Coach stroke camps. All of these new ideas are designed to help our swimmers become technically proficient while having a lot of fun. I will have a chance to talk a little more about the program and what parents can expect this season at our upcoming Black and Purple meet. I hope most of you will be there, it is always a fun event. I will also be conducting a series of parent meetings for each group. I wish all of you swimmers the best of luck this season and I will see all of you on deck!

Tom Hainey Head Coach This is Coach Tom's 14th season as the Head Coach of Manta and 17th season as a head coach. In the past 13 years Tom has helped Manta achieve success internation-ally, nationally and provincially by constantly challenging all Manta swimmers with a program built on pride toughness and respect. Coach Tom has been a national team coach as well since 2000 and has taken athletes to Australia, Greece, Argentina, and Europe. As an athlete coach Tom represented Canada at the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Paralympic Games winning 4 gold and 5 silver.

Norm Carriere NAG I At 5:55 a.m., I often misquote a line from the movie ‘Apocalypse Now’ - “I love the smell of chlorine in the morning. Smells like victory...” Quoting from that dark and terrible script and turning it into a slice of life affirming gesture, I realize that swim sport can be a fabulous opportunity to explore one’s desire, dedication and determi-nation. As a committed physical educator and swim coach for many years, I have often been surrounded by athletes with a wonderful work ethic. Doing the work is their prize. Many go on to become excellent contributing citizens. That is my prize! I have coached for MANTA Swim Club for 22 years in many capacities from the early entry level to the most elite athletes. I’m a Level 3 coach having twice represented the province at the Canada Summer Games culminating in proudly wearing Canadian colours at the 2009 World Short Course Para Championships held in Brazil. My position in the swim club as NAG 1 and Dryland Coach presents me with serious challenges for serious athletes and aspire to assist those athletes to achieve their dream goals. Additionally, I am mentoring the Mini-Manta and AGD Coaches.

Szilvie Carriere Assistant Head Coach I am excited to start my 3rd year as the Assistant Head Coach of Manta Swim Club. Through my 22 year coaching career with the club I have coached athletes at a wide variety of skill level and mentored young coaches along the way. The past 2 years have been the most exciting time in my coaching career working with swimmers at TAG level. I am looking forward to being part of this successful team and spending another year with the amazing group of young swimmer in TAG.

Jack Baturn High School My coaching career re-swimming has spanned over 30 years, all with Manta including 10 years as Head Coach of one of the forerunner Manta club. I coach because I enjoy coaching, communicating with young people, seeing them develop not only their swim-ming skills but their personal abilities and attitudes.

Szandra Temesvari AGD+ This is my ninth season as a coach with Manta. I am a high school science teacher, I have coached from the mini-manta level, all the way up to my current role as the AGD+ coach. My passion for coaching comes from helping young athletes reach their potential as they learn the relationship between commitment, work ethic and success.

Lawrence Cohen AGD This is my 7th year coaching with Manta, which followed 12 years as a Manta swimmer. I am an elementary school teacher and got involved in coaching to pass along my pas-sion for sport to young athletes. I feel that swimming teaches lifelong skills as Manta swimmers develop and progress throughout the various levels of the sport. As an athlete, I swam with Manta, starting with Coach Norm in 1993, progressing throughout the Manta program to Coach Tom before swimming for the University of To-ronto Varsity Swim Team. I was a member of the Manitoba provincial team for several seasons and was proud to be a member of the 2001 Canada Games team.

Kelsey Zadro M-Squad - Pan Am My name is Kelsey Zadro and I am 20 years old. I have been involved in Manta Swim Club since 1998, when I started in the Mini Manta Program. I swam for 8 years after that, and finished in NAG. The year after I had left, I started coaching Mini Manta, and then moved up to coaching M Squad two years later. This will be my third year coach-ing M Squad. I coach swimming because I love the sport and enjoy being able to share my knowledge with the new swimmers wanting to potentially start their swimming ca-reer. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to be involved in the kids creating their goals and pushing themselves to succeed in them

Sean Armstrong M-Squad - Concordia My names Sean and I’ll be coaching M-Squad at Concordia. I swam for Manta for nine years, starting way back in 1999, swimming Minis at Concordia. I started coaching a couple years ago, I did a session of Minis, then a year of M-Squad/the former M-Squad +. My goal is to take all the knowledge I gained over my swim career and pass it on to new swimmers. Well that’s it for now; look forward to seeing everyone on the 13th.

Ivan Ingram Mini-Manta - Pan Am I’ve been with Manta for a long time now. I started as a swimmer in 1998 and have been with the club ever since. I stopped swimming competitively in 2007 and started coaching Mini-Manta. Other than coaching, my current goal has been to complete my Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Manitoba. I look forward to starting this season coaching Mini's at Pan Am and am excited at the prospect of helping my Mini's become better swimmers.

Eric Monterio Mini-Manta - Pan Am I was a competitive swimmer with Manta for 10 years. I was on the Manitoba Provincial Team and a member of the 2007 Western Canada Games. I am now a member of the UofM Bisons. This is my 2nd year as a fundamentals coach. Why do I coach? I would like to give back to the younger swimmers what I have learned over the years.

Jacqueline Rano Mini-Manta - Elmwood Hi, my name is Jacqueline and I am currently in my fourth and last year of my Psychol-ogy degree at the University of Manitoba and am writing my honours thesis on child cognitive development. I swam with Manta Swim Club for 8 years and am very excited to be coaching for my second year with Manta. I love helping young swimmers improve their swimming ability while having fun partaking in the wonderful sport of swimming!

Erin Kuhtey Mini-Manta & M-Squad - Bonivital Hi, my name is Erin. I'm currently a Grade 12 High School student. I swam for Manta Swim Club for 6 years, and thoroughly enjoyed it! I have all my certifications as a life-guard. It will be my first year coaching for Manta, and I'm really looking forward to it, and hopefully continuing next year. Swimming is my chosen sport to facilitate my time with, and I'm looking forward to it for years to come.

    Information from the Travel Coordinator........

Goldfins Invite (Saskatoon) is intended for any AGD+ swimmer who is at least 11 years old, all high school, TAG and NAG I/II swimmers.

Halloween Invitational (Brandon) is intended for AGD+ swimmers who are 10 years & under, and all other swimmers not going to Goldfins (M-squad, AGD, AGD+, high school).

25 rooms are blocked for Manta families going to Brandon at the Victoria Inn Hotel, 3550 Victoria Ave. Last date to book is October 14. Group code is 172730. Note that there is a non-refundable deposit required for all out-of-province meets. Please adhere to deadlines for payments. Late payments may render your swimmer ineligible to attend.

Ensure the club has your swimmer's personal health information number (PHIN). This is the 9 digit number on the back of your family health card. Notify the club of changes related to your child's health issues, allergies, medications and your emergency contact information. This allows us to up-date our travel file.

Swimmers traveling via air or across any international border should have a valid passport. Check the expiry date and promptly renew to avoid problems with team travel.

Consider the role of chaperone for out-of-province meets. All travel, hotel and meal expenses are covered by Manta. Please e-mail the head coach @ [email protected] or travel coordinator @ [email protected] if you are interested in this opportunity.

Each swimmer (along with their parent), will need to read and sign a Code of Conduct form for all team travel. Parents are required to review the Code of Conduct with their swimmer(s) prior to meet and team travel. This will be reviewed at the Parent Meeting on October 22nd, during Black & Purple event. One form will be sufficient for travel during the entire season.

Did you know that for one swim meet session we need a minimum of 42 people?

    DID YOU KNOW?

Manta pays $100,000.00 in pool costs per year

Manta has 4 swim-mers currently swimming under full scholarships in the United States.

NAG 2 Academic Average is 94%.

    Swim Bag

Goggles (nice to have an extra pair just in case)

    Swim Suit

Swim Cap (nice to have a spare)

    Towels (2)

Sweat pants and Shirt (T-shirt and shorts) - to keep a swimmer warm between events

Water Bottle (2) - Water is a must, but it's also a good idea to pack some Gatorade or similar to replace the electro-lytes lost while swimming. You can mix a sport drink and water 50/50 and achieve the same effect.

Snacks: Since your child will be using up lots of energy rac-ing, you will need to provide them with energy food. Fruit, Power Bars, pretzels, and peanut butter and jelly sand-wiches are all good choices. If your child is allergic to pea-nuts, you can send fruit or granola bars.

Meets can get long so books, deck of cards, chance to catch up on homework would be a good idea to bring along. NOTE: If your child brings an electronic device they are responsible for it NOT THE COACH!

Swim Meet Tips for what to pack

The next Board Meeting will be held on October 16 @ 6:45 a.m. at the Pan Am Pool.

The Board Meetings are open to any member of the Swim Club.

Kernels Popcorn Will be available at the Manta Office for $2.00/bag at the end of October

    Flavours available:

Butter Salt White Cheddar Air Caramel

ORN is extremely valuable to this club. Generally, Manta earns over $30,000 every year.

All Manta families benefit from the funds raised as this money helps offset pool costs which al-lows Manta to keep its swim fees down.

Any extra shift worked will earn your family a credit. Each credit is worth $35.00 for indoor shift and $50.00 for a driving shift.

The more driving teams we have out on the road, the more money we can raise for ORN. In the end, the club and our swimmers are the winners!

Please fill out the Volunteer Application form - ORN Volunteer Application Form and leave it at the Manta Office.

For information on the duties of a driving team can be found on the Manta website in the Mem-bers Section under Fundraising - Operation Red nose.

Driving teams must arrive by 7:00 p.m. and will be sent out by 9:00 p.m.
