History

The Society of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in Cincinnati is the third oldest Friendly Sons chapter in the United States.

The first chapter was founded in 1771 in Philadelphia. George Washington, adopted a member on December 17, 1781, dined with the Philadelphia Society on St. Patrick’s Day 1782. The Father of our Country characterized the Friendly Sons as “a society distinguished for the firm adherence of its members to the glorious cause in which we are embarked.” Other members included: Generals Moylan, Shee, Wayne, Knox, Butler, Irvine, Hand; Commodore Barry, founder of our Navy; and John Mease, who crossed the Delaware with General Washington on the memorable night of December 25, 1776, surprising the Hessians, and his brother, Matthew, who commanded the quarterdeck guns under John Paul Jones in the Bonhomme Richard’s fight with the Serapis.

The New York chapter was instituted on March 17, 1784. It, too, had its origin in Irish officers in the armies of the American Revolution. On November 25, 1783, the last British soldier departed from the shores of New York. The British flag which had been nailed to the flagpole of Fort George was hauled down, and the American flag was run up in its place. Led by General Washington, the Continental Army entered the city. At Washington’s side rode the Governor, General George Clinton, the son of an Irishman; and the advance battalion was commanded by General Henry Knox, also the son of an Irishman and a member of the Philadelphia Friendly Sons.

The Cincinnati chapter was founded in 1868, and we have remained true to the principles on which the Friendly Sons were founded: to assist the needy and distressed and to promote friendly, social feelings among our members.

Since the founding of the Cincinnati chapter in 1868, the society has maintained a tradition of openness to

Irish as well as non-Irish men of goodwill, without regard to ethnic or religious origin.

Through the mists of over three centuries, we faintly see Thomas Ignatius Adams, all of 15 years of age, shipping from Northern Ireland to the old Jesuit Indian mission of Conewago west of the Susquehanna River in South Central Pennsylvania. It was 1750, when religious liberty was guaranteed to Catholics, even in Pennsylvania, only in those outbound wilds. It was 1750, a mere century after the British subjection of Ulster Catholics. In Adams family lore, the British in the 1600s confiscated a castle occupied by the Adamses. Such a castle commanded the village of Rathfriland in the Mourne Mountains of County

Down, just miles from Downpatrick, the legendary burial place of St. Patrick. The castle was the ancestral home of the Chiefs of Iveah, the Maguinness (later Guinness) family, into which Adamses married and with whom they lived in the castle. Not long after his arrival in America in 1750, Thomas Adams served as a Private in Captain Christopher Gist’s Company of Virginia in the French and Indian War. Twenty years later, he was a Lieutenant in the Philadelphia County Militia, 1st Regiment of Foot, in the American Revolution. He died in December, 1776. Three of Thomas’s sons, Joseph, Jacob and John Adams, also served in the Revolution, Joseph (our next direct ancestor) in the York County Militia and John in the Battle of Brandywine in 1777. There, John stood so close to General Lafayette that he could hear the General say to the troops about his wound that it was not dangerous, they should not mind it. A fourth family member, Thomas’s son-in-law Peter Kaylor, spent the winter of 1777-78 with General Washington on the frigid floor of Valley Forge. With their service in the French and Indian War and the American Revolution the Adamses early on were truly “the Fighting Irish.” After the Revolution, Thomas Adams’s daughter Mary Magdalene married John Elder from nearby Emmitsburg, Maryland. Elder was an ancestor of Archbishop Elder of Cincinnati, the namesake of Elder High School. By the late 1780s, the wilderness again called some of the Adams clan. Drawn by the wilds of the Allegheny Mountains, three of the surviving family veterans of the Revolutionary War, first John Adams of the Brandywine battle, then later Joseph Adams and his wife Elizabeth and Peter Kaylor and his wife Anne Elizabeth, migrated to the mountains. There they were founding members of the Loretto Parish of Fr. Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin, the Prince Missionary of the Alleghenies and the first priest to receive all his holy orders in America. Many of our succeeding Adams line married Irish women, including Richard Adams to Margaret McConnell and James Adams to Kate Hughes. Kate was the daughter of Mary Barry, believed without substantiation to be a relative of Commodore John Barry, the Father of the American Navy. The Adamses of Conewago were farmers and blacksmiths. In the Alleghenies they also worked as loggers and tanners. Some family members owned taverns, in Hollidaysburg, Chest Springs and Greenville, Pennsylvania, all known as the Adams Tavern or Adams Hotel. My grandfather Ed and father Jack both started their own grocery stores. In the 19th century the Adamses maintained their service to country, in the War of

1812 and the Civil War. Thomas Adams’s grandson Thomas was a Corporal in the 142nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia, in the War of 1812. Thomas Adams’s great grandson Josiah (Jesse) Adams, a Private in the 101st Pennsylvania Volunteers, was wounded in combat and captured in the Civil War and survived 10 months of internment in the notorious Confederate prison at Andersonville, Georgia. After the Civil War the adventurous Jake Adams, a great grandson of the first Thomas Adams, moved west to engage the Plains Indians with the U.S. Cavalry. A Private in the 7th Cavalry, Jake fought at Custer’s Last Stand in the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. On another ridge than General Custer, he was serving under Captain Frederick Benteen and survived despite carrying water under fire to wounded comrades. In the 20th century, Uncle Burt Lentz served in World War I as an Artillery 1st Lieutenant in France with the 79th Division. He later wrote patriotic literature, including “Old Glory Uncased,” for which he won the George Washington Honor Medal from the Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge and which is reproduced in these pages. The medal is awarded for outstanding contributions to the American Way of Life. President Kennedy was buried at Arlington National Cemetery within view of Uncle Burt’s tombstone, which Adamses have assumed reflects tribute to Uncle Burt. In World War II three of Uncle Harold’s sons served in the military, Paul Adams in the Army and Bob and Had Adams in the Navy. Cousin George Adams was a paratrooper in the Battle of the Bulge and Uncle Harry Luden flew 23 missions out of England as a waist gunner on a B-26 bomber, at the same time as my wife Cindy’s dad, Lt. Eldon Riley, flew P-51 Mustangs on 32 missions out of England, mostly in bomber escort, including two dog fights with the new German jets. Uncle Harry and Eldon Riley both later flew in the Korean War, Uncle Harry as a fire control Sergeant in a B-36 bomber and Eldon piloting F-84 Thunderjets and F-100 Super Sabre Jets. Paling by comparison, cousin George (Skip) Adams served in the Navy in the Cold War and your President had the honor as a 1st Lieutenant to serve successively as a Platoon Leader, Executive Officer and Battery Commander of a HAWK missile battery at an old Luftwaffe air base on the West German – East German border. Finally, nephew Steve Adams, a career Marine Sergeant, participated in the Gulf War. Steve’s service and that of another brother, Patrick, in the Air Force made it eight out of eight generations in America that this Adams family answered the call to duty. That’s a proud legacy of devotion to country for over 250 years by just one “Fighting Irish” Catholic family, from the conflicts of the French and Indian War to Marine duty in the Gulf War. How fitting it is that we of the Friendly Sons, which was founded by future Revolutionary War veterans, many of whom were Irish, say today may God Bless America and Ireland. May we honor the Constitution for which Americans have fought and died and the freedoms which it protects and preserves, including freedom of religion which is under such attack today. Those are the same freedoms for which many of our families came to America and which enabled whatever success our families have enjoyed. And, finally, may we join with Uncle Burt, as requested in his poem:

And pay reverential homage to those – both living and dead – who, by their deeds, made this Flag of ours and all it symbolizes, possible.

Our Honored Speaker It is rare that a person choosing broadcasting as a career can pursue it in his hometown. Dennis Janson ascribes it to blind luck. Others would submit that local ties, loyalties, discretion and work ethic have contributed to his success over 45 years on Cincinnati’s airwaves. From answering the request line at WSAI-AM starting in 1966 as an Elder High School Sophomore to stepping away from the sports anchor desk at WCPO-TV 9 in May, 2013, DJ has “Lived the

Dream,” going places, meeting people and doing things unfathomable for a kid from Glenway Avenue in Price Hill. He has turned the page on daily immersion in the TV news process and is now devoting himself to 9 On Your Side’s digital platforms and periodic on air commentaries. He further indulges his urge to stay busy presiding over investment properties. A past attendee at Friendly Sons banquets, the UC Broadcasting Program Hall of Famer says that being invited to address the 2014 banquet is among the greatest honors of his career.

OOur Honored Guest

This year’s Honored Guest is Paul L. Lindsay, Jr., who served as the President of the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Cincinnati in 2003-2004. Paul served two years as an officer in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, after his graduation from Xavier University in 1956. He remained in the Army Reserves with the 11th Special Forces Unit, rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel. Paul worked from 1970 to 2004 in Xavier’s Alumni Relations and Development Departments. He retired as Associate Vice President for University Relations. He and his late wife Nancy were married for 52 years and had six children, including our Second Vice President Pat Lindsay, and 15 grandchildren.

Our Mission: The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Foundation exists to foster strong Irish heritage by way of benevolence to the hungry and devotion to the Irish arts.

Our Vision: To become the pinnacle Foundation in the Greater Cincinnati Region for the promotion and preservation of Irish Culture, and friendly giving to the area’s hungry.

Our History: On March 17, 1771 and March 17, 1784, The Society of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick for the Relief of the Immigrant Irish were founded in Philadelphia and New York respectively. For over two centuries, both Philadelphia and New York have annually granted sums of money for the betterment of the Irish in their communities, giving to universities, hospitals, and individual scholarship. In 1868, the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in Cincinnati was founded, and thus our involvement of the spirit of the American Irish.

In 2002, the Trustees and Officers of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in Cincinnati formed The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Foundation to focus on the promotion of Irish culture and feeding the hungry in our community.

Our Beneficiaries: As a Foundation we are excited to continue our support and production of the Cincinnati Celtic Festival. In addition to the Cincinnati Celtic Festival, in recent months the Foundation has provided support to: The Cincinnati St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, The USO, and The Irish Heritage Center of Greater Cincinnati.

The Irish Heritage Center

A few years ago I was

walking alongside St. Stephen’s

Green in Dublin, Ireland

with my wife Cindy and Irish

friends Mary Whelan (the

current Irish Ambassador to the

Netherlands) and her husband

Kevin O’Malley. A gentleman

walked past us, turned and

called back “Ed Adams!” After

exchanging greetings and

salutations with the gentleman, Kevin asked me “Do you know everybody?”

I said certainly I knew the gentleman, Kent Covey, who, it had turned out,

was in Dublin with wife Maureen Kennedy for an Irish drama project.

Most everyone in Cincinnati’s Irish community knows Kent and Maureen

and for good cause. They’re the founders of our Irish Heritage Center, a bit

of history in the making. And, in the endeavor, as the Irish blessing goes,

the wind has always been at their backs, the sun has shone warm upon their

faces and the rains have fallen softly upon their fields.

Fellow highschoolers in the Buffalo, New York area, Kent and Maureen

reunited at a high school reunion and married in 1999. Kent is a Naval

Academy grad, an ex-Marine chopper pilot in Vietnam, a retiree from a

successful business career and a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.

Maureen, in a life devoted to the stage, has been a college theater major, cruise

ship choreographer and dancer, actress and director, and one of the founders of

the NOHO-North Hollywood Universal City Arts District and Cincinnati’s

award-winning Irish American Theater Company. Kent and Maureen’s

respective ancestors hail from County Mayo and County Clare, Ireland.

The gleam in the couple’s eye for an Irish Heritage Center in the Queen

City arose in 2005, when they started their search for a building to house it.

The search culminated in 2009 in their victory in a sealed bid auction for the

Kent Covey, Maureen Kennedy & Aidan Cronin, Consul General of Ireland

old McKinley School Building on Eastern Avenue in Columbia-Tusculum.

The building had been vacant for four years, that is, except for a covey of

pigeons that Kent Covey coveted not. Maureen knew the building was their

destiny when she first saw surrounding the theater stage a ring of plaster Celtic

knots on the proscenium arch, along with the large letter “M” emblazoned on

the stage curtain, which has transitioned from a symbol of McKinley School

to a symbol of Maureen, who declared “This is a sign!” Their non-profit

venture was off and running.

The 44,000 square foot building dates from the 1870s and is as solid as

Dublin Castle. After much hard work by a corps of volunteers, the building

houses a 200-seat theater-ballroom; a large center hallway from whose ceiling

hang the flags of all 32 of Ireland’s counties (many people search for their

“home” county’s flag); an office; an art gallery; an art room; a dance room;

a tea room; a green room; a 2000-book library and museum; a music room,

where the Friendly Sons Glee Club practices; and, of course, because it is a

touch of Ireland, a thatched roof outside the warm and engaging pub with a

large oak bar. Oh, and there’s always a drop of Guinness on tap, mind you.

Kent holds the perfect pint award from Guinness. And behind the bar among

several fine whiskeys there’s a jar of Red Breast, this writer’s preferred Irish

whiskey, on the recommendation some years ago of his friend O’Malley.

So, what goes on at the Irish Heritage Center for its 350 members? Too

much to tell, but here’s a tempting sample:

• Concerts, many of which include performers from Ireland like the Brock

McGuire Band, Eddie Costello, Comas, The Young Wolfe Tones, We

Banjo 3 and Alyth McCormack and Trione Marshal of the Chieftains.

• Theater, like Moll, What Happened Bridgie Cleary, A Couple of Blaguards,

Dancing at Lughnasa and the 60th anniversary of The Quiet Man.

• Exhibitions, such as those of William Butler Yeats and James Joyce, from

the National Library of Dublin, shown for the first time in this city.

• Visits by dignitaries like Martin McGuinness, Deputy First Minister

of Northern Ireland, and Martin Rouine and Aidan Cronin, Consuls

General of Ireland.

• Semesters of Irish courses, including dancing, fiddle, history (including

the famine), language, art and singing.

• Programs from Irish Teas with Irish soda bread and scones to genealogy

workshops, Bloomsday celebrations, Irish Famine Memorials, 1916

Easter Rising Events and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations welcoming all.

• Celebrations, like the Grand Opening Gala with Nick Clooney in 2010,

the Green Tie Affair in 2011 with Malachy McCourt, repeated in 2012

and 2013 with Aidan Cronin and Nicholas Michael, and Irish Picnics

and Christmases in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

• Plus many partnerships celebrating Irish culture with Arts Wave Samplers,

CET Television, local radio and TV new appearances and community

meetings, and

• Of course, Pub Night every third Thursday with free musical

accompaniment.

To Kent Covey and Maureen Kennedy and their corps of volunteers, supporters

and members, who were saluted by Vachtarán na iÉireann (President of Ireland)

Michael D. Higgins on the Center’s November 24, 2013 four-year anniversary,

may we raise our glasses in tribute and appreciation for their contribution to

the Irish cause and Irish history in Cincinnati. Slainte!
