AboutThe Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors is a company limited by guarantee and not having a share capital. The company was registered on the 2nd March 1920 under The Companies Acts 1908 to 2006. The company’s registration number is 164726.

Aims of the Society
OUR AIMS1. To encourage improved methods of surveying
and drawing up of reports in line with developments and technology.
2. To promote and foster a higher sense of the importance of ship and engine surveys in commercial circles; to encourage a greater degree�of�efficiency�in�those�engaged�in�the�same.
3. To provide opportunities for discussion amongst members and to give facilities for the reading of papers, the delivery of lectures and for the acquisition and dissemination, by other means, of useful information connected with the profession.

OverviewThe SCMS is formally constituted as a British registered company, guaranteed by its members. It is governed by its Memorandum and Articles of Association and by it Byelaws. The Council of the SCMS, whose principal members are the appointed directors, governs the Society. The SCMS is subject to the current editions of the Companies Act.
The Society is also contracted by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA)�of�the�UK�to�act�as�a�Certification�Authority�(CA)�for�small�commercial�vessels. SCMS Examiners assess and certify compliance of these vessels to the relevant MCA Codes of Practice.
A CA committee oversees all matters relating to the MCA mandated duties and action relating to Code compliance. Membership of the CA Committee is by�invitation�and�selection�of�relevant�experienced�and�qualified�individuals.�SCMS�headquarters�staff�in�Southampton,�UK�administer�all�the�CA�activities.

Information on Eligibility for Membership of the SocietyFull� membership� is� open� to� qualified� marine� engineers,� electro- technologists, naval architects, master mariners and other acceptable disciplines on the basis of at least two years subsequent full-time training/employment�with�a�firm�of�marine�surveyors/�consultants.�This�definition�broadly includes Class surveyors, marine superintendents and similar. The full-time professional two-year work-experience requirement is essential.
Documentary�proof�of�academic�qualifications�and�membership�of�other�professional organisations is required. This should include copies of any relevant diplomas issued by professional institutes, details of service within the marine industry, and work undertaken within the qualifying two year period. Endorsements by at least two current Members or Fellows of the Society is also required. These should be people who can vouch for your professional work and full-time employment in line with our entry requirements.

What Do We Do for Our Members?The Society was formally established in 1920 and currently has a world-wide membership. The Society aims to provide a corporate base for members to exchange and update relevant technological developments and experiences. Members details are provided to relevant potential clients via hard copy and electronic documentation and placed onto the Society’s website.�The�head�office� in�Southampton,�UK�acts�as�a�hub�and is available for enquiries for both assistance and advice for members. The Society recognises the requirement for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) on a world-wide basis and aims to provide relevant courses and information on the latest maritime developments and requirements for members.� Formal� attendance� certificates� are� supplied� for�courses. Social events for members, both formal and informal, are held at various locations throughout the year.
What Do Our Members Do?The professional work of the Society’s members covers the full scope of Marine Consultancy. This includes hull, machinery & commodity surveys, stowage & securing of cargoes, condition and� on-hire/off-hire� surveys,� marine� safety� &� operational�reviews, new building plan approval, new construction supervision, tonnage measurement, instructions from P & I Clubs, technical advice to clients, expert witness services to the legal profession, service to average adjusters and underwriters for hull, machinery & cargo and to maritime arbitrators. Some of the members are also authorised examiners for the MCA Small�Vessel�Certification�Scheme.�Many�members�participate�in local, national and international forums and working groups that aim to increase the safety and working conditions for�all�seafarers�along�with�the�safety�and�efficiency�of�marine�vessels.
