The 80/20 campaign: Creating a culture of practiceKeri O’Riordan, Professional Officer, BASW EnglandAll good social work is dependent on relationships. The strength of social worker relationships with children, youngpeople and their families can shape, influence and determine outcomes. Stark findings from a survey conducted byBASW England highlight that members are still spending too much time in front of their computers rather thanundertaking direct relationship-based social work with children. The 80/20 campaign is about how, individually and collectively, we can reverse this trend and support organisationalleaders and social workers to create a culture of practice that focuses 80% of their time working on direct relationship-based practice and reflective supervision with 20% on administration tasks. Find out about the 80/20 campaign andwhat BASW is doing to refocus social work practice on direct work.

m 2 A strengths-based & solution-focused culture change programme
Marc Gardiner, Co-Director & Solution-Focused Lead, Zebra Collective in partnership with Devon County CouncilIn recent years, Devon County Council Adult Social Care has been exploring the possibility of a strengths-based andsolution-focused programme. In December 2017, it commissioned Zebra Collective to work alongside thedepartment to facilitate this programme. One year on there has been significant progress, with staff recognising therelevance of the approach to their practice and services. This workshop will tell the story of the first year, share theplans for the next year, and include space for questions and answers. Join Marc Gardiner to reflect on this story and how it may relate to participants’ own practice.
Everything you wanted to know about apprenticeships and the Social WorkerDegree Apprenticeship (but were afraid to ask)Angela Gill, Apprenticeship Development Manager, The Open University There have been more changes to apprenticeships in the last few years than ever before, and it is sometimes difficultto keep up. Strengthening Relational PracticeJulia Hassall, Head of Practice Improvement & Phil Rigotti, Social Work Consultant and Trainer for Strengthening Practice, Rochdale Borough CouncilStrengthening Relational Practice is not an overarching or wrap-around approach; it is not one of a range of methodsor tools, nor something chosen for certain circumstances or situations. Relational Practice sits at the heart, at the core,of everything else and will lift and enhance all other methods and approaches.Julia and Phil will discuss their observation that when practitioners focus on the nature and quality of the relationshipbetween themselves and the person they are helping, all the other theories, models and approaches that practitionersmight choose to use are enhanced. Practitioners become more acutely focused and aware of how the subtlety ofhuman behaviours and relationships can influence outcomes – with the profound learning that the most importantrelations to build first are those with our colleagues.

Using psychotherapy, attachment theory and neuroscientific research to buildrelationships after severe emotional traumaAngus Burnett, Referrals and Partnerships Manager, The Mulberry Bush In recent years there have been huge advances in our understanding of the effects of trauma, neglect and abuse on achild’s developing brain. These findings have helped confirm what staff in residential settings have been experiencingwith such children. Recent advances in neuroscientific research tell us that just as traumatic experiences freeze anddysregulate children’s emotions, over time the experience and delivery of empathic caring relationships can work toameliorate and modify these psychopathological states. This understanding supports and complements our intuitiveand psychodynamic understanding of building close relationships.Join Angus as he outlines 70 years of the evolution of the Mulberry Bush School as a therapeutic environment with anopenness to new theories and ideas.
