An appeal from the bingo committee……………………..Mark Stern I have two requests; the first is to read this memo.

The second will come further down in the message. Bingo has been going very well for the past few

years. More regular players are coming every week. We have come in ahead of budget; and brought in additional revenue for FHC. It should be pointed out that bingo is the third largest source of revenue for First Hebrew.

The bingo committee is a dedicated group of volunteers that show up to all (or nearly all) of the 42 nights a year that we have bingo. Some come early (4:30) and stay late (9:30), some only come when needed and stay for an hour and a half. We cover for each other and anybody who needs a week or month off for any reason doesn’t get any grief.

Unfortunately, some of our critical staff will be way in January.

That brings me to my second request… We need a couple of people to staff bingo from 6‐

7:30pm in November and January. We could also use a few people to help out with

the food service part of our operation (which separately brings in an additional $3,000/year for FHC).

Please think about volunteering for this critical period or join the “Bingo regulars,” call or e‐mail me Mark Stern –914‐714‐4723, [email protected] or Frances Weiner 914‐432‐2487, [email protected].

Thanks in advance.

Rabbi’s MessageDear FHC friends, You are invited to a very special event which has

been held in CT for the last 20 years, but now it takes place in PEEKSKILL, NY. And you are the honored guests. Join me to play:

STUMP THE RABBI On Friday December 18 following 7:00 services.

GOAL: The goal of the evening is to stump the rabbi, as many times as possible.

HOW TO PLAY: Come prepared with questions about anything from any aspect of Judaism. I have to provide you with an answer, on the spot, which satisfies your curiosity. If I succeed, you learn something! But if I fail, then following Shabbat I

make a donation to the tzedakah (charity fund) of your choice AND go find out the correct answer which will be made public by Friday Jan 15, 2016. We all learn something and your favorite tzedakah benefits as well!

WHO WINS: We all do! We learn something, have an interesting conversation, and spread some tzedakah money around. What could be bad?

So get going! Look in trivia books, encyclopedias, Google, in your zaidey’s siddur….and bring your questions to STUMP THE RABBI, Friday Dec 18. Wine, cheese and crackers at 6:30 p.m. Service at 7:00 pm, Stump the Rabbi to follow.

Looking for a way to Help the Community? WE NEED MORE PEOPLE TO COOK FOR THE

SOUP KITCHEN The social action committee at First Hebrew Congregation is dedicated to feeding the hungry in our community. In accordance with our mission, we provide a meal for the local Soup Kitchen for about 80 people once a month, on the second Monday of the month. (In addition to fighting hunger, the social action committee provides informational programs about vital community issues) The food we provide is usually cooked in our own homes (or purchased) by our members, and left on the bench in the synagogue before 10 am on the day it is to be served. The soup kitchen picks up the food and serves it at lunchtime. You can also help by joining the social action committee, providing scrip cards to supermarkets to purchase food, making monetary donations to the social action committee, or providing food If you would like to help cook, join the social action committee, or help in any of the ways enumerated above , you can send or leave donations in the synagogue office in an envelope labeled “social action committee”, put nonperishable food in the box in the coat closet labeled “social action committee”(please do not put it in the food pantry box ) or contact Fran Olmsted at [email protected] or 845 661 4691. President’s MessageHow is it possible that in 2015 Jewish college

kids are excluded from participating in student government because they are Jews? How has it come to pass that Israel has come to be seen by a segment of the college population as an apartheid state singled out as an international pariah?

If you aren't a regular reader of "The Jewish Week" you may have missed the steady drumbeat of anti-Israel activity that has been occurring on campuses around the U.S. and in Europe. The "BDS" (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) movement has been growing for 10 years and it is getting stronger each year.

BDS is modeled on the anti-apartheid movement of the 1960's to 1990's. This time, Israel, above all other countries in the world is being singled out as the prime violator of human rights and international law. BDS calls for;

"The right not to live under military occupation", "The right to equality as Palestinian citizens of Israel, and "The right to return for people made refugees through ethnic cleansing in 1948 and subsequently". (Source: Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at UCLA).

This past spring, a UCLA student was initially denied a position on the student government's judicial board when her "ties to the Jewish community" (Hillel and other Jewish groups) were cited as a "conflict of interest". Those of us who went to college in another time can only ask "What

is going on here?" According to The Jewish Week one of the most

problematic developments recently in the BDS movement is support from "the fast growing Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) which agitates against the Israeli government and supports the BDS movement". As if Israel doesn't have enough problems, we now have Jews fighting against it?! JVP's budget has risen from $280,000 in 2008 to $1.5 Million in 201 2.

Meanwhile SJP chapters across the country are offering "their audience an opportunity for emotional gratification and allows the group to effectively connect with important minority and political organizations. By aligning with other popular liberal causes, SJP has succeeded in building coalitions...to push the BDS campaign" (The Jewish Week 10.16.15)

I'm scared by BDS and you should be too. There's a whole college generation being raised on Israel and Jewish hatred. We can however fight BDS by informing our kids and their kids and by speaking out for Israel, the only functioning democracy in the Mid-East. We need to actively question why it is only Israel that is constantly singled out. We need to open our eyes and our mouths to call BDS what it is...organized anti-Semitism.

Men’s Club

Sisterhood…Women Enjoying Jewish LifeThere are few thornier issues than the status of

the Middle East, especially Israel. We are always poised between hope for peace, and wild despair. Regardless of the nature of the times, it is always good to be as aware as we can about the situation. This month, Sisterhood and Men's Club are lucky enough to have Yael Lewis speak to this difficult situation with us, in a talk titled "Israel: A Current Perspective" .

Yael Lewis is our newest shlicha, one of the two shlichim (emissaries) for the Westchester Community based at the Rosenthal JCC. Those of you who joined us at our Friend Raiser at the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in August were able to meet our other shahliach, Yoav Cohen. They were also involved in the planning and coordinating of the Evening of Unity with the People of Israel Program held on November 2 at the Westchester Reform Temple. Shlichim act as a cultural bridge between Israel and the United States. They are here as part of the Westchester Community Shaliach Initiative which is a county-wide project coordinated by the Rosenthal JCC and the Westchester Jewish Council with significant financial support from UJA federation of New York as well as from Hillels of Westchester and the Jewish Agency for Israel,

funding from Carol and Michael Lowenstein, the Adnim Foundation and the Nedivot Venture Philanthropy Fund of UJA Federation of New York.

Yael Lewis grew up in the United States, where she was active in her Jewish community. She immigrated to Israel in 2008 and served as a sergeant in the IDF forces. Yael worked and traveled to various countries and developed her passion for language and cultures. She received her bachelor’s degree in Government, Diplomacy and Strategy from the Pahpael Recanati Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) in Israel. She is also co-manager and instructor in a non-profit organization that gives aid to those serving in the IDF. She also volunteered with Holocaust survivors living in Israel. She is interested in international relations, public policy and diplomacy and speaks English, Hebrew, Spanish and basic Arabic.

Please join us on December 13 for this timely and important event. As always, breakfast will begin at 9:15 am and Yael will start her talk at 10:00 am. We look forward to seeing you all.

Bingo Schedule

BINGO: Why are we asking you to donate your time to helping out with Bingo? It generates approximately $25,000 in revenue per year to our operation of the synagogue. The time commitment is only about three hours on a Wednesday night. We now start Bingo at 6:30 pm so you and our customers can get home earlier. If you are opposed to fulfilling your obligation as a member, then pay the $400 Bingo assessment immediately and let Lisa know to take you off the Bingo list. As a member in good standing it is your obligation to participate in this fundraising activity. If the congregation chooses not to continue providing Bingo to the community and forfeiting the OPM (other people’s money), then the congregation will need to be assessed accordingly to raise the $20,000, or determine what services will be cut. Do your part of fundraising and show up for your assigned Bingo night. Bring a book or magazine to read (there is time when you are waiting). If you come late, it is still better than not coming at all. Or, if you choose, send the $400.

Important Note: Your 2015–2016 dues include a surcharge for Bingo. If a member family meets its two-bingo requirement during the year, the family will receive a credit. Similarly, if a single member meets his/her one-bingo requirement during the year, he/she will receive a credit.

URGENT MESSAGE: If you are unable to attend on your scheduled Bingo night, IT IS YOUR RESPONSBILITY TO GET A REPLACEMENT.

Thank you for your continued cooperation!!!! Workers should report to Bingo by 6:15 pm and are expected to stay until at least 10:00 pm.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED COOPERATION

IMPORTANT - If you are unable to work on your assigned day it is your responsibility to switch with someone or find someone to replace you.
