Example  Problems  

Problem  -­‐  Rain  water  washes  griLng  salt  off  the  roads,  councils  don't  know  which  areas  need  re  salQng  and  there  is  no  measure  of  the  impact  on  the  environment.  Problem  -­‐  High  temperatures  soRen  tarmac  so  vehicle  use  causes  ruLng  in  the  road  surface.  Problem  -­‐  Potholes  causing  accidents  and  damage  to  property  which  the  council  have  to  pay  out  in  claims  -­‐  someQmes  spurious  claims  Problem  -­‐  Public  not  knowing  when  is  the  best  Qme  to  travel  to  avoid  traffic,  could  any  of  the  informaQon  we  collect  aid  in  this?  Problem  -­‐  Public  oRen  know  of  Crash/incident  hotspots  (regular  incidents  on  stretches  of  roads)  and  this  is  not  fed  back  to  council  or  currently  unable  to  be  proven.  Problem  -­‐  Badly  designed  roads  needing  constant  maintenance  when  oRen  re  design  or  re  surfacing  would  be  more  economical  Problem  -­‐  Asset  lifeQme/  maintenance  is  difficult  to  manage  and  predict  Problem  -­‐  vehicle  weights  causing  weaknesses  to  the  road  surfaces

Hackathon  

•   Industry  experts  provided  case  studies  and  expert  advice  

•   The  Hackathon  created  a  buzz  around  the  Smart  Streets  hub  with  over  384,500  requests  to  the  Smart  Streets  hub  asking  for  8.62  GB  of  data  during  the  2  days.  

•   Teams  kept  coding  through  the  night  !  •   FantasQc  feedback  from  parQcipants  on  the  day  •   Judging  panel  including  academics,  industry,  local  authoriQes  and  parliament.

•  Work  on  SmartStreets  is  conQnuing  through  the  HyperCat  consorQum.  

•  IoT  research  is  exploring  new  areas  including  new  capabiliQes  around  predicQon.
