Sleeping Tips

Shut Up Shop: Turn off electronic devices an hour before bed as the blue light emitted from the screen interferes with the release of melatonin, the sleep hormone.

See The Light: Upon awakening, ease into the day by exposing yourself to 15 minutes of natural sunlight to help regulate your biological clock and keep it on track, including helping your sleep at night. If the natural light is not possible, you may want to consider a specially designed light box that simulates sunlight.

Snack Smart: Craving a bedtime bite? Treat yourself to sleep-friendly foods (snacks that are high in melatonin) such as bananas, tart cherries and oatmeal that will help hit the hay to sleep soundly.

Bottoms Down: Stop sipping caffeinated drinks, including energy drinks, by 4pm as the stimulant can stay in the system for up to 12 hours. And, make it an early last call with alcohol, cutting consumption approximately 3 to 4 hours prior to surrendering to slumber. Ironically, drinking may help you fall asleep faster, but it plays games with your sleep cycles.

Chill Out: Since temperature directly impacts the length and quality of a night’s sleep, keeping your bedroom comfortably cool – around 68 degrees F – helps maintain the optimal body temperature to support better sleep. The material of your mattress and pillow can also disrupt sleep if it causes you to wake up hot and sweaty. Consider a mattress or pillow which has high thermal conductivity to help dissipate body heat, producing a cooling effect that allows you to enjoy deeper stages of sleep for longer.

Do Not Disturb: Develop a regular sleep and wake schedule (even in the weekends): this will reinforce your body’s sleepwake cycle and will help you to fall asleep more regularly at night.

Get Going: Exercising in the morning or mid-day supports sound sleep at night. But, if you don’t give yourself enough time to decompress (at least 3 hours), you will stimulate your body at the very time it needs to catch some zzzs.

One For The Road: Traveling takes a toll on a good night of slumber; a strange sleeping environment can compromise the winks you need to feel refreshed for work or play. That’s why a quality, comfortable pillow is important for your sleep also when traveling. If you have the room, pack your favorite and don’t forget an eye mask in case the hotel room or bedroom where you are staying is not dark—a necessity for the best rest.
