The readings for this weekend invite us to

meditate on God’s gift of healing as a sign of

the presence of the Kingdom of God among

us. The restrictions placed on lepers in

biblical times are countered by the

compassion Jesus showed in his healing

ministry. In our time, many of the sick feel as isolated as those

lepers and need the support and compassion of Christ mediated

through the church community.

While Jesus left us the Sacrament of the Anointing of the sick,

there is often some confusion among parishioners about who

should receive the anointing. This is a sacrament for the sick, not

just for the dying. This sacrament is to be celebrated before

surgery, if a serious illness is the reason for the surgery. The

sacrament may be celebrated with children if they are old

enough to benefit from it. The Sacrament of the anointing of the

sick is the sacrament of healing and reconciliation, so if you or

someone you know feel the need to be anointed because of an

illness I encourage you to ask for this sacrament.

On the 14th we will be celebrating Ash Wednesday: Lent

begins this week. It is a great coincidence that in the secular

calendar is celebrating St. Valentine’s Day, a celebration of love

and in some countries, friendship. What a wonderful opportunity

to behold the Love and Friendship of God to us, as we come to

receive ashes may we remember that this ceremony of the ashes

is about God’s mercy and willingness to forgive and to keep us in

His love and friendship. Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy Ash

Wednesday! Pax Fr. Juan

Did You Know???

Over 15 years ago St. Timothy’s entered into a sister-parish relationship with St. Jerome’s.

Serving about 6,400 parishioners, our sister parish is located in Gonaives, Haiti, and is

fairly remote, with 14 chapels, one large central church, four elementary schools and one

high school. From the beginning, we have helped fund cantinas at the schools so that

students and staff are able to receive one hot meal each day, and have supplemented

salaries for the teachers. Through our “Valentines for Haiti” initiative, for the past four

years we have also provided scholarships, supplies, and meal plans to specific students

whose families are unable to afford their education. There is not a reliable public-school

option in these remote villages so private school is essential. Education is crucial to

climbing out of poverty, and since the literacy rate is only 49% in the country as a whole,

our support is critical to these children. 100% of donations made to our Haiti Poor Box

collections and Valentine initiative are sent on to St. Jerome’s.

Good Stewardship is our goal!

Diaper Drive Thank You!

Mother Seton School would like to thank you for your support of our

Diaper Drive, our Catholic Schools Week Service Project. With your

generosity, we collected 8646 diapers for the Catoctin Pregnancy

Center! Thank you, again, for helping us make it a big success!

CHRISTIAN FORMATION AND FAMILY PARISH NEWS

February 10-11- 2018 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle B)

Matthew 6:1-6,16-18 Jesus teaches that almsgiving, prayer, and fasting should be done in secret.

We celebrate Ash Wednesday this week, the first day of the

liturgical season of Lent. In this season, we prepare ourselves to celebrate the high point of our Christian life, Easter. Each year, the readings for Ash Wednesday are the same. They call us to a change of heart and teach us about the traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. These disciplines are to be part of the Christian life during every season, but during the season of Lent, we renew our commitment to them.

The meaning behind tracing a cross on our foreheads with ashes (the liturgical sign of Ash Wednesday) is a summary of our Christian life. On one level, the ashes remind us of our origin and our death. (In the words of the prayer said when we receive ashes: “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return.”) The ashes are also the sign of our victory: the cross of Christ. In his death and resurrection, Christ conquered death. Our destiny as Christians is to receive the victory over death that Christ won for us. We acknowledge that victory when we “turn away from sin and [are] faithful to the gospel,” words from the alternative prayer when we are signed with ashes.

MONDAY NIGHT CHRISTIAN FORMATION CLASSES

Sunday, July 24, 2016 Meditation and Questions for Reflection or Group Discussion Mass Readings: 1st Reading: Genesis 18:20-32 2nd Reading: Colossians 2:12-14 Responsorial: Psalm 138:1-3,6-8 Gospel: Luke 11:1-13 Deepening Our Relationship with Our Heavenly Father through Prayer He will get up to give him whatever he needs. (Luke 11:8) Imagine the situation: you are traveling through ancient Palestine and arrive in a village far later at night than you had planned. No inns are open here, and your empty stomach sinks as you realize the only option left is knocking on the door of an old friend. You know the culture, which dictates that it would be extremely rude and inhospitable not to welcome a guest. But that doesn’t make it any less embarrassing. You arrive at his house close to midnight and pause. Like most families of this time, they live in a one-room house. Knocking on the door means disturbing not just your friend, but his wife and children; they could be up until sunrise settling the children down again! You hesitate, weighing the awkwardness of imposing yourself against the exasperation your friend will surely show. Finally, rousing all your boldness, you knock. Many of us experience a strong social instinct to be “low maintenance,” to avoid ruffling feathers or putting undue pressure on those around us. This desire comes from a good place. We want to love people, not burden them. But in today’s Gospel, Jes us tells us that we should have no such hesitation in our relationship with God. The guest, pestering his friend, is our model of unembarrassed petition. And when his request is not immediately granted, he is not discouraged but continues “pestering.” In some countries, the phrase “God botherer” is used as a derogatory term for Christians. In fact, this parable shows us that, not only are we to “bother” God constantly with prayer, but he urges us to. Our heavenly Father loves nothing more than hearing his children’s petitions. So don’t hold back from asking big things from God because you think you’re asking for too much. Just keep on knocking! “Lord, I present my needs and desires before you. Give me the courage to come to you without any hesitation.” (Many thanks to The Word Among Us (www.wau.org) for allowing us to use meditations from their monthly devotional magazine. Used with permission.)

(Ciclo B)
