P a g e 2 Student Athlete Spotlight Kelly Fogarty is a 4th year Human Biology major. She is from Danville, CA. She is on the Women’s Track & Field team.

Why did you choose UCSD? I chose UCSD because it had a great balance of academic and athletic opportunities. What do you like about Sixth College? Honestly, I liked the dorms. I like the open fields and that they weren't high rises. How did you/your team do this season? I did really well this season. I came out of it with 2 individual CCAA Conference Championships, and 2 NCAA Na-tional Division II All-Americans by placing 4th in the 100m and 3rd in the 200m.

How do you juggle your academics and athletics? It's all about time management. I would go to class in the morning, then practice, and then go home and do homework. I would do that every day and have friend time on the weekends.

What athletic moment are you most proud of? Fortunately there are many that I am proud of. Winning my first individual All-American last year was pretty amazing. Also, placing third in the 200m this season at Nationals was definitely a proud moment for myself.

How do you get yourself motivated before a game/meet? It has to come from within. I tell myself that this is my race and that I am going to win. That helps get my confidence up , so then I can just go out to the track and focus on executing the race.

When you are not at practice or studying what do you like to do in your free time? Honestly, that isn't much time and because of that, if I have free time I will probably watch a little TV. But other than that I love to read and the beach is always fun! I have amazing friends too, so I try to spend as much time with them as I can.

What do you want to do after graduation? I am applying to medical school this summer, and with this coming year off, I plan to work in a lab and continue my training. I am going to be an assistant coach for my track team and I will train with them. I hope to improve my times and qualify for the Olympic Trials next summer.

Who is your favorite athlete and why? My favorite athlete is actually someone on my team. I think Stephanie La Fever is an amazing athlete because she is so versatile. She got 2nd in the nation in the Heptathlon and 2nd in the nation for long jump. She can do almost anything!!

If you had a million dollars what would you spend your money on? I would definitely get a mini cooper! I love that car! Then I would probably use it to pay for medical school : )

What was your favorite childhood cartoon character or show? I loved Clarissa Explains it All. It was a Nickelodeon show with Melissa Joan Heart as the main character and I just loved it!

Kelly was honored as an Outstanding Senior Student Athlete for 2010-2011 and

earned a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for Graduate School.

Christine Merrill, UCSD Sixth College Alumni, is competing in

the IAAF World Championships in Track & Field

Story courtesy UCSD Athletics.

After claiming a bronze medal at the Asian Athletics Championships in Japan in July, former UC San Diego track star Christine (Sonali) Merrill will represent Sri Lanka at the IAAF World Cham-pionships later this month. Merrill, whose mother Neloufa is from Sri Lanka, will be one of two athletes to represent the South Asian island nation at the Championships August 27 through September 4 in Daegu, Ko-rea.

An eight-time All-American during her four-year career with the Tritons, Merrill will compete in the 400-meter hurdles, while fellow countryman Chaminda Wijekoon will take part in the 1500.

Merrill is coming off a standout performance at the 19th Asian Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan, where she finished third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 57.30 on July 9. She posted a time of 56.83 in the prelims, which was a Sri Lankan national record.

While she just missed the World Championships qualification standard of 56.55 in Japan, Merrill was awarded a trip to Korea to take part in the meet as a wildcard by the Sri Lanka Ath-letic Association.

The 400 hurdle prelims are scheduled for 11:25 a.m. local time on Monday, August 29. For more information on the IAAF World Championships, click here.

One of the most successful

athletes in program history,

Merrill set school records in

both the 400 hurdles (58.04)

and 400-meter dash (54.76)

as a senior at UCSD in 2010.

As a junior, she won the

NCAA Division II title in the

high hurdles after posting a

first place time of 58.59 in

San Angelo, Texas.
