A LETTER FROM JIM HERRIG CHAIR OF THE DUBUQUE MERCY HEALTH FOUNDATION
During the 2016-17 fiscal year, your Dubuque Mercy Health Foundation had the opportunity to raise funds for a variety of important programs. From the opioid epidemic to oncology, and cardiac care to community outreach, your foundation contributions made a significant impact on Mercy patients and fellow community members by raising more than $709,000!
The list of funded needs during the year included:
– Narcan kits provided to emergency responders and law enforcement officers to save the lives of those addicted to opioids in crisis situations.
– Experiential therapies for Mercy Turning Point Treatment Center.
– New catheterization lab equipment for cardiac care.
– Staxi wheelchairs to improve patient and caregiver comfort and safety.
– Mammographies and mammography diagnosis for women in need from the Swipe for a Cure and Fund-a-Need campaigns.
– Outreach to our local Marshallese population for ongoing health care and education.
– Renovation of the hospital dining room to provide a more pleasant, relaxing and comfortable atmosphere for patients’ families and caregivers.
Special thanks to the Mercy Service Club for their ongoing dedication and support of the needs of Mercy’s birth center and pediatric department. Their hard work and commitment has generated dollars to provide equipment supporting Mercy NICU and pediatrics, purchasing items such as a Giraffe Incubator, a Pedia Poser Chair to assist in x-raying infants, birthing simulators and an intubation trainer for physicians delivering special infant care. The Mercy Service Club is a long-time stalwart of Mercy. Visit their gift shop when you are next at Mercy!
As the foundation looks back on the 2016-17 year, it was a year of impact and transition. Dollars were raised and committed to the funding of many worthwhile projects. Executive Director John B. Donovan retired, and Sue Hafkemeyer stepped into that role. We thank John for his many years of service to the foundation and welcome Sue to the foundation.
On the horizon are many exciting opportunities to support Mercy Medical Center and the medical needs of our area citizens. First and foremost is the new integrated care at Mercy Cancer Center. We look forward to working with all of you, our supporters, this fiscal year and beyond to make the Mercy Cancer Center and many other Mercy projects come to fruition.
Sincerely,
Over the years, Mercy Service Club has donated more than $2.4 million to Mercy Medical Center. In the past fiscal year alone, they gave $100,581.30 in support of Mercy’s mission, including over $79,500 for needed equipment in the birth center and pediatric unit, $20,000 to the Mercy Service Club Children’s Assistance Program, and over $1,000 in in kind donations. The volunteers of the Mercy Service Club make a remarkable difference in the lives of our youngest patients.
Mercy Service Club is blessed to have a group of dedicated volunteers who donate their time and energy in operating the Mercy Gift Shop. Founded in 1948, Service Club will celebrate 70 years of giving back to Mercy and the community next year. Thank you to everyone for supporting the gift shop, thus enabling us to continue our mission of giving.
Cindy Fuller, Mercy Service Club president
MERCY SERVICE CLUB
Nearly 200 guests enjoyed the “Puttin’ on the Ritz” theme at Mercy’s 2016 Black and White Gala in November. Through generous bidding and contributions, over $95,000 was raised for capital projects and opioid education and treatment.
The evening was hosted by Marvin and Maria Ney. A special thank you to the sponsors: Paramount Ambulance and Dubuque Anesthesia Services, P.C., as well as gala presenters Dave Q. and Kate Farber, and a friend of Mercy.
2016 BLACK AND WHITE GALA
We feel it is important to support and give back to the community. The Foundation has a direct impact in the Tri States as Mercy Medical Center provides the highest quality of health care to all, regardless of their ability to pay.”
Randy Kemp, Dubuque Anesthesia Services, P.C.
FIGHTING THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC In response to the overwhelming surge of heroin and opioid use disorders, the Dubuque Mercy Health Foundation board pledged $20,000 to cover the cost of NARCAN rescue kits for those who cannot afford to purchase a rescue kit and for training on its use. To date, well over 400 people have received training, including community members, law enforcement, and college professionals. Since Mercy began offering the rescue kits, at least five people have been resuscitated with the use of NARCAN. To date, $16,000 of the $20,000 pledge has been used to fight this epidemic and save lives.
This epidemic has touched individuals and families from all walks of life. We are truly grateful to the Dubuque Mercy Health Foundation. Their financial commitment means that this life saving treatment is readily available to anyone who needs it. So many communities across Iowa, and the country, have struggled to equip law enforcement and citizens with NARCAN. Because of the swift action of Dr. Thomas Boxleiter and the Mercy Health Foundation, we have been able to disseminate NARCAN without delay. NARCAN is saving the lives of those who experience opioid overdose and also helping to protect our law enforcement in the event of exposure to fentanyl analogues. We continue to be a leader in the state and throughout the country as we share our NARCAN best practice with other agencies, hospitals, and communities.”
Malissa Sprenger, coordinator of Mercy Turning Point Treatment Center

DRA FUNDING
DANCING WITH THE STARS
The Dubuque Racing Association awarded Mercy a grant of $6,663.16 to purchase two iPads to provide language translation services, and a SMART Board to provide the care team with an interactive and hands on learning experience that’s designed to enhance clinical or professional development for better patient outcomes/experiences.
At just 25 years old, Officer Nate Schmidt received a devastating diagnosis: stage 4 testicular cancer. The cancer had also spread to his stomach, lungs, and esophagus, and the tumor in his stomach was the size of a football.
Nate underwent 12 weeks of chemotherapy and a 16 hour surgery to remove the tumors. He is now eight years cancer free.
When Nate was asked to participate in the Dubuque Chamber’s Dancing with the Stars event, he knew he wanted his efforts to go toward supporting other cancer patients at Mercy. Nate raised over $7,600!
The additional iPads increased the accessibility and timeliness for staff to access language translation services for patients/families. The use of the iPad translation services continues to increase versus using the phone services, as staff and patients prefer to visually see and communicate with the translation services interpreter. In the past year, translation services have been provided for the following languages: American Sign Language, Arabic, Cantonese, French, Korean, Mandarin, Polish, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.”
Marie Duster, MBA, OTR/L, education specialist in clinical and professional development
Mercy was an easy pick! The doctors, nurses, and staff were compassionate and made me feel as comfortable as possible. Dubuque and Mercy need this new cancer center to continue offering quality care.”
Nate Schmidt
