CHANGE IN FUTURITY RULE An individual breeder can pay a sanction fee of $200 and nominate any animal they own and sell private treaty or at a non-sanctioned sale (ex. National Sale in Denver, etc.) All nominations are due May 1.

The annual Iowa Simmental events that took place at the Iowa Beef Expo on the weekend of February 11, 2012 were bigger and better than ever. Saturday morning 123 head of Simmental cattle were checked in. The juniors met for their annual meeting in the afternoon, as did the senior association. Sunday morning the Queen contest was held and the parade of sale animals took place at 1:00. A delicious buffet banquet was served to approximately 150 individuals on Sunday evening. Honored guests included: the Bob Finch Family of Ames, IA. Bob was recently awarded the prestigious ASA Golden Book Award at the annual ASA Chairman’s Reception in Denver. The Finch family has been involved in the Simmental business for many years and Bob is very deserving of this award.

Also honored were Larry and Carol Drake of Cen-terville as they were to receive the 2012 Iowa Seed-stock Producer of the year at the Iowa Beef Expo. Drake Simmentals have been long-time supporters of all Iowa Simmental activities. Congratulations Larry & Carol from the Iowa Simmental Association. Other guests included Ed Creason, ASA fieldman of OK, Kelly Schmidt of MN, Larry Martin of IL, Greg Miller of WI, and Van Nedig of NE. Plaques were presented to outgoing board members, Gerald Schorg of Remsen, Rob Long of Creston, and Donald Onstot of Carlisle. Kyle Ruth recognized C.J. Brown, well known cattle artist, as being the Iowa Junior Simmental Supporter of the Year. Queen, Mikayla Van-denBerg of Albia and Princess Pagie Reck of Blakes-burg. Several juniors from across the state received awards for exhibiting champion Simmentals at their local county fairs. Notes from the ISA President - Tammy Heaton

~~~~
Recently I was re-elected as your Iowa Simmental Board President and am honored to represent the state of Iowa in this position. I realized that in past articles I hadn’t taken the opportunity to share with you a bit about myself so, no better time than now. I currently reside in Monroe, Iowa with my husband Mike and 16-year-old son Tyler. Most of our time is spent work-ing with cattle and following Tyler around. He keeps us hopping with Football, Basketball, Soccer, FFA, 4-H and other community activities. When we aren’t tied up with him we try to spend time with our family on the farm (Reck Brothers N Sons Simmentals) working with the cattle and volunteer a lot within the community. Mike works for Barr-Nunn Transportation in Granger and me for Pioneer Hi-Bred in Johnston. Tyler hasn’t found a job yet, but we are hopeful HA HA!! As I finish my comments for this edition I want to leave you all with a challenge. I challenge you to en-sure that you do your part to keep Simmental Genetics as pure as possible. This statement doesn’t mean that you only have Purebred Simmental Genetics. Instead it is meant to ensure that the Simmental genetics that are being promoted and/or used are truly that. We continue to hear of situations where individuals use the system to benefit them as individuals by market-ing animals that are not what they appear. In the begin-ning this may get folks the publicity they are search-ing for however think about those kids that are in the second spot that miss out on that opportunity because they are following the rules. At some point one would hope that morals would come into play and things like these wouldn’t happen at all. Unfortunately, waiting for the right thing to occur may be farther off than what I am comfortable waiting for. Therefore, I will make you as Simmental Breeders this guarantee. From this point forward I will ensure that your board does their part to follow the appropriate procedures to ensure that we do what is morally right for you as breeders and more importantly for Simmental Genetics. I challenge you as breeders to help with this crusade by doing what is morally right for the Simmental Breed and especially our youth.
Thanks and have a successful Spring!!!Tammy Heaton
Hello Spring!! Spring is always a wonderful time especially when you walk through the pastures and see all the new baby calves running in the sun. What is more refreshing than that? I hope you all are having a great calving season and are looking forward to the warm weather as we embark on another Iowa Spring.
preciate your support! Get involved! There are many activities coming up that you, as a junior, can participate in. Coming up June 2-3, our Junior Simmental Field day will be held in Indianola, Iowa where juniors may show their cattle plus participate in the workshops provided. We, as a junior board, have plans to hold a skill-a-thon contest along with helping younger kids learn how to prepare for the contests at Regionals and Nationals such as: judging, public speaking and sales talk. If you have not participated in these contests before, I strongly encour-age you to get involved. It is a great opportunity to meet new friends and make a lot of great memories that will last a lifetime—just ask your parents. Make it a goal to be involved in these events and the IJSA. Never been to a Regional or National Classic? This year the North Central Regional is going to be held in Huron, South Dakota, June 20-23. Also, the 32nd An-nual Simmental National Classic will be held in Lima, Ohio, July 7-13. Check out the AJSA website www.simmental.org for schedules and entry deadlines. I am looking forward to seeing you at these events coming up this summer. Don’t pass up these great opportunities. If you have any questions about these events or anything else taking place, feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 641-344-5085 or any other junior board member or advisor. Do not let opportunities like this slip away from you. The ac-tivities that you will participate in through our junior program will only benefit you in the game of life!
