No More Drama From Black Mamba
In my lifetime, I cannot recall a player as great and more despised as Kobe Bryant, the self-proclaimed greatest Laker of all-time.
Some will immediately point to Barry Bonds as an example, but really, there's not as much to dislike about Bonds. Both were great players. Bonds, however, will forever be known as the guy who ruined the baseball record book; Kobe will never be remembered as having "ruined" the game -- at least on the court. Bonds is di erent in other ways. He had two careers, the one before the allega-tions of steroid use, and the one where his head size literally became too big for his helmet to handle. In both stages of his career, Bonds was always something special to watch.
And yes, while Bonds was never a favorite in the club-house, and reporters took a quick dislike to him when-ever he refused to be cordial, one can always argue that the steroid scandal that seemed to only grip baseball and forever tarnished his
reputation was magni ed by that surliness. I mean, Sammy Sosa was always a happy-go-lucky guy. Mark McGwire wasn't ever going to be confused for a standup comic, but he seemed like a pretty-standup guy.
Let me state this: I per-sonally believe that Kobe was the best player of the post-Jordan era. I can't imagine anybody arguing that from a statistical stand-point. Twenty years playing for the same team, the second highest scoring game (81), ve champion-ship rings, most points in LA Lakers history, 18-time all-star and a league MVP award. A product of Philadelphia, he probably is that legendary city's best high-school player ever, and arguably the best player the city ever produced. Sorry, I ' d s t i l l p i c k Wi l t Chamberlain overall (but not at shooting guard).
ere are, unfortunately, other stories from this storied career, and let those also be a great lesson to every young athlete out there: e way you comport yourself off the court or eld, in the locker room and in your hotel room Jacuzzi
does most de nitely help de ne you. Kobe scored the most points in Laker history, but he also missed the most shots in NBA history and gave up almost as many turnovers as he had assists. He was the guy who didn't want other players looking at him in the locker room, the guy who lacked humil-ity, who often sabotaged himself and the team due to his desire to be the sole center of attention. He wasn't the guy in the band; he was a solo act, the before and a er party.
Most Laker fans will argue that they would cer-tainly take the 15 playo appearances and ve rings, the show he put on every night, including the nal game of his career where he scored 60 points on 50 shots and took so much air out of the room that, literally, a bag of air from the game sold for $15,000 on eBay. For me, his career ended in that Jacuzzi in Colorado. He said he liked being the villain on the court. Mission accom-plished.
The next time we hear from Kobe will be his (right-ful) induction to the NBA's Hall of Fame. Time so ens the heart and bad memories fade, but there will be more than a few fans who at that time also will re ect on one additional, perhaps larger and more important fact: That sort of drama has passed. You don't have to live like that anymore.

e public was invited to continue celebrating the history of Centralia, Illinois during the ird Annual Locust Street Historical Fair held last Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. along Locust Street. Walking tours were conducted and presen-
tations were given on several historic buildings. The Centralia Area Historical Museum again featured its spectacular N Scale train display, complete with tiny replicas of old buildings. Many actors portraying past Centralians were dressed in historic costumes. Old fash-ioned cra s items and his-toric photos were on sale, and Locust Street was lined with antique cars. Pictured are scenes from this year's event.
Kayci Landes wanted to serve on the front lines when she joined the Army ve years ago. e Army wouldn’t let her. Back then, combat positions in the infantry and cavalry were not open to women.
Now, the Apache helicopter mechanic has that option, and she’s taken advantage of it.
e sergeant is on a path to become the Army’s rst en-listed female cavalry scout. She committed to the new assign-ment Wednesday at a ceremo-ny at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
“We’re all soldiers, so we all
have to deal with what the ‘Big Army’ throws at us,” she said Wednesday before her re-en-listment ceremony at the base. “And I’m something the ‘Big Army’ is throwing at them. Whatever. I will earn your respect over time."
Women had been barred from serving in combat roles until December 2015, when Defense Secretary Ash Carter li ed all restrictions on females in the armed forces.
Landes is currently a non-commissioned o cer in the 16th Combat Aviation Brigade, and she served a tour of duty
in Afghanistan. “I do like a challenge,” she
said. “I enjoy spending time in the field. The fact that they spend a lot of time in the eld doesn’t bother me. I do enjoy the dirty part of the Army, even though I haven’t had as much time doing that.”
Landes and her husband, Army Spc. Brendan Stahl-Dugger, have four children ranging from 8 years old to 11 weeks old. She didn’t tell the kids about her new job until the night before her ceremony.
“ ey ask a lot of questions,” Landes said. “I told them a little too early that we were coming to Washington, so I had to deal w i t h qu e s t i on s a b out Washington for like six months.”
She’s not worried about the kids when she starts her cavalry scout training at Fort Benning, Georgia, in October — either family steps in when both parents are away from home for work.
Stahl-Dugger, a combat en-gineer, isn’t concerned about whether Landes can be a cavalry scout, she said — he just hopes
she will like the new job. Cavalry scouts go out ahead
of groups of tanks, conducting reconnaissance and finding ideal routes for tanks to take.
It’s tting work for someone who is blazing a new trail in the Army.
“It is quite remarkable for people to want to do something when you’re breaking ground,”
said Command Sgt. Maj. Jack Love of the 7th Infantry Division. “I think it’s really going to take o , but it takes these rsts to make it happen. I’m pumped up.”
Kayci is from the Centralia area and attended Raccoon School. Her mother, Tammy Landes, still lives in this area.

6 The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area Wednesday, May 11, 2016
Although Ted Cruz fought hard to take Indiana, he lost, and that was fatal for him. At the close of the polls, with 57 delegates at stake, it was called for Donald Trump by a land-slide, which lead to the an-nouncement that Cruz was suspending his bid for President.
It wasn't quite that simple for the Democratic Party with 92 delegates up for grabs. At the close of the Indiana Primary it was too close to call, with numbers of 50% Clinton and 50% Sanders. But as the evening wore on, Bernie Sanders added to his wins by 4,000 votes over Clinton and took Indiana. It was a nail biter.
I have to admit I was pulling for Bernie. Again, as I've said before — not that I would vote for him — we don't need a Socialist in the oval o ce. But the last thing we need is Hillary Clinton as Commander-in-Chief. In my opinion, she is corrupt, dis-honest, self serving and wouldn't know the truth if it looked her square in the face. And that's just a start! It's beyond my comprehension how anyone could vote for her, but to each his or her own.
Hours after Cruz's an-nouncement John Kasich threw in the towel as well, leaving Donald J. Trump the last man standing and the eventual Republican nominee.
Let's face it, last week was a heavy news week, starting with the Indiana Primary. en came Ted Cruz's sus-pension of his campaign, and right a er that Kasich ended his bid for the Republican nomination. Kasich spoke to reporters in Columbus, Ohio. He didn't give any reasons, however, the fact remains he only took his home state of Ohio. He did say that his
message never seemed to resonate and continued to say, “The spirit, the essence of America lives in the hearts and souls of us. Some missed that message.” Maybe he didn't drive the message home enough!
I personally liked John Kasich and felt he was the most Presidential out of all the 17 Republican Presidential hopefuls. But he just never seemed to gain traction with the GOP voters, even though his track record is impressive. He's a two-term governor of Ohio and has spent 18 years in Congress.
A er Kasich's press confer-ence announcing he was ending his bid to be the GOP Presidential nominee, Donald Trump told a CNN reporter, “I think John's doing the right thing. I think John will be very helpful with Ohio, even as Governor.” He continued to say he'd had a good rela-tionship with John Kasich. e shocker for me was when Trump said he was willing to consider Kasich as a running mate by saying, “I would be interested in vetting John.” What I nd interesting is my dear friend Richard Freeman of Salem has been saying for a while that John Kasich could be Donald Trump's running mate. Hmm! Richard, I guess there is a chance now.
On to Capitol Hill. The reaction to GOP Chairman Reince Priebus calling Donald Trump the presumptive GOP nominee because he's the sole GOP presidential contender standing ranged from okay to not okay. It went from Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader, saying that he was committed to supporting his Party's nominee but going on to say he expects Trump to heal the wounds of the GOP's tumultuous primary ght to
House Speaker Paul Ryan showing his disapproval. I've lost a lot of respect of Ryan. Oh well, at this point the Republican Party has two choices:
1) Donald Trump or2) Hillary Clinton. And for me, I'll take
Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton a thousand times over.
So again I say the 2016 election is the Republicans Party's to lose. I would hope they would have learned from their mistakes in 2012.
And nally, sadly, another hero lost his life in a re ght in Iraq last week. Navy Seal Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Charles Keating was shot and killed when he and other special operation forces went to the rescue of U.S. forces that got caught in a gun battle involving more than 100 Islamic state ghters. He gave his life rescuing others! Keating, 31, is the third U.S. Service member to be killed in combat in Iraq since U.S forces returned there in 2014.
During a morning brie ng, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest made no mention of Keating's death until pressed, and then he only o ered lip service. is administration doesn't know the rst thing about honoring our American heroes.
Personally, our hearts go out to the family of this fallen hero.
Until next week.

Some Dog Owners Need Training, Too
D E A R P A W ’ S CORNER: When I’m out at the dog park, I see so many people who are ignored by their dogs. No matter how much they scream or shout, their pets just do whatever they want. I’ve tried to tell them that yelling only goes so far, but they don’t listen. What else can I do?? — Clarisse G., Cartersville, Georgia
DEAR CLARISSE: One of the hardest subjects to broach with other owners is how to handle their pets. Particularly with dogs, owners have rela-tionships akin to their own child, and the results of well-intentioned
advice tend to be inef-fectual. Owners may even snap back at you.
However, a badly behaved dog in a public area can have a lot of re-percussions. An unruly dog may be attacked by another dog, or a human may be injured by a dog bite — events like that just add fuel to arguments against dog parks or dogs in public areas.
To get a dog to behave on command, two key factors can make a di er-ence in training: A calm, confident voice when giving commands, and consequences. If a dog won’t follow a command, corrective action must be given as soon as possible — putting it back on the leash, leaving the dog park, whatever.
Not surprisingly, dog owners who aren’t con-trol l ing their dogs respond to the same factors. If a dog is dis-rupting the other pets’ enjoyment of the park, tell its owner — with con-
dence! — that their dog has to act within the park’s rules, or leave. If they don’t respond, then bring the consequences: report the owner and dog
to the city, or to the group — if the dog park has an organized group of other owners.

Chicken CasserolesTo my way of thinking, a simple reduction of the roasting pan juices from chicken
surpasses any chef 's complex sauce. Add some wild rice, garden fresh vegetables, a bottle of wine and you have dinner! Simple! is week and for a few weeks to come I will be sharing some of my favorite chicken dishes, starting with casseroles, which are perfect for make ahead dishes for parties or for come and go family dinners.
Chicken Tamale Pie4 cups (1 qt.) chopped fresh ripe 1½ T. chili powder, or to taste tomatoes, or 1 can (28 oz.) 1 cup milk Italian-style plum tomatoes, 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal with their juices 3 eggs, lightly beaten1 can (16 oz.) cream-style corn 1 cup pitted ripe olives3 to 4 tsp. salt 2 cups coarsely chopped cooked chicken1 medium-sized onion, chopped 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese,1/2 cup olive oil mixed with 1 cup shredded sharpOlive oil for drizzling cheddar cheese
Combine tomatoes, corn, salt, onion, olive oil, and chili powder in large saucepan and cook over medium heat 15 minutes. Preheat oven to 350° F. In mixing bowl, stir together milk, cornmeal, and eggs; add to tomato mixture and cook, stirring constantly to prevent scorching, until thick, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in olives and chicken. Pour mixture into lightly greased shallow ovenproof dish. Top with cheeses, drizzle with oil, and bake until pie is rm and cheese is crusty, 35 to 45 minutes. Serve piping hot. Serves 6.
Chicken And Pasta Casserole1 (4- to 5-lb.) stewing hen, 1 cup pitted ripe olives, whole or 2 (2½- to 3½-lb.) fryers or sliced6 cups (1½ qts.) water 1 cup canned Italian-style plum1 cup chopped celery tomato puree1 green sweet pepper, seeded, deveined, 1 cup tomato paste and chopped 1 pound fusilli (corkscrews)1 red sweet pepper (or 2 green peppers or other dried pasta if red is unavailable), seeded, 1/2 lb. Cheddar cheese, grated deveined, and chopped 1/2 lb. Monterey Jack cheese, grated1 cup chopped fresh mushrooms 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
Place chicken(s) in stockpot, add water, bring to boil over high heat, and skim o any scum. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer chicken until very tender, about 2 to 3 hours. Let chicken cool in stock. Remove chicken and discard skin and bones. Cut meat into bite-sized pieces and reserve. Strain stock into large pot. Add celery, sweet peppers, mushrooms, olives, tomato puree, and tomato paste to chicken stock. Cook over medium-high heat about 30 minutes. Stir in pasta and cook until al dente, about 20 to 25 minutes. Fold in reserved chicken. Preheat oven to 350° F. Combine three cheeses in bowl. Alternately layer pasta and chicken mixture with mixed cheeses in large ovenproof dish, ending with a layer of the cheeses. Cook casserole until cheese is melted and bubbly, about 30 minutes. Serves 8.
Chicken And Sausage Jambalaya1/2 lb. Cajun-style andouille or other 1 cup chopped celery hot smoked pork sausages 1 tsp. minced or pressed garlic,1 (2½- to 3½-lb.) fryer, or to taste cut into serving pieces 2 cups long-grain brown or white riceSalt 2 cups homemade chicken stock,Freshly ground black pepper canned low-sodium broth, or water1 cup chopped onion Minced fresh parsley for garnish
Slice sausages into bite-sized pieces and place in cast iron dutch oven or other deep heavy pot with water to depth of about 1 inch. Cook over medium-high heat until water boils away, about 10 minutes. Continue cooking until sausage slices are lightly browned and fat is rendered, about 8 minutes more. Remove sausage slices with slotted spoon and reserve. Leave rendered fat in pot. Salt and pepper chicken pieces to taste. Cook in rendered sausage fat over medium heat until browned, about 5 minutes. Remove and reserve. Add onion and celery to pot and saute until so , about 5 minutes. Add garlic, reserved sausage and chicken, rice, and chicken stock or water. Bring to boil, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until water evaporates and rice is tender, about 15 minutes. Garnish with minced parsley. Serves 4.

C h r i s t O u r R o ck Lutheran High School held its most successful Sterling Evening dinner and bene t auction to date. e event was held April 9 at the school and netted a record $82,500 to support the con-tinued operation of the school. Included in this amount is $18,000 for a special fund a project to purchase new security lights and cameras for the school.
Tuition covers a little less than half of the operating costs of the decade-old Christian high school. e remainder is covered by association congregations, generous benefactors, a multitude of smaller con-tributions, and the success of events such as the Sterling Evening.
More than 400 people attended the evening, which featured approxi-
mately 400 silent and live auction items. Attendees were treated to a three-course meal catered by Cygan & Delaney of Highland and generously s p o n s o r e d b y T h e Maschho s, Inc., of Carlyle.
“We have received in-credible feedback from the evening, including several very positive comments from people who had not attended a Sterling Evening before,” said Don Duensing, principal and executive director of Christ Our Rock.
Additional major spon-sors include Arbeiter-Palm, Brammeier Construction Services, Carl & Sharon Hanke, Friend of CORLHS, Greenvil le Livestock Auction, Inc., Heard’s Livestock Auction, Inc., R u t h M a s c h h o f f Me m or iu m , Un i t e d P r o d u c e r s , I n c . ,
Wedekempers Inc.. e meal was comple-
mented with desserts by Niemerg’s and Jerry’s. CORLHS students served as dinner hosts and pro-vided dinner music to set a festive atmosphere.
Mr. Duensing served as master of ceremonies for the evening, with addi-tional support from assis-tant principal Wilfred Pennington. Bill Windler and Jim Lehde and their staf f from Nashvil le handled the live auction portion of the evening. Among the live auctions included several beautiful handmade quilts, gourmet meals, a handcra ed iron Cardinals designed outdoor repit, 500 bushels of corn, a whole hog & processing, a John Deere Pedal tractor, and an outdoor gas grill, to name but a few.

 e Remedy for Stress
A friend recently re-marked, “We live in a crazy world and things are getting crazier every day.” Today I
heard a lady say to her co-worker, “I am so stressed that my hands are shaking.” In America millions of dollars are spent on pre-scription medication to help cope with stress. Daniel prophesied that in the end-times a king indwelt by Satan shall arise to world power, “And he shall speak great words against the Most High and shall wear out the saints of the Most High. (Daniel 7:25) Satan’s Modis Operandi is to try to wear out God’s people. But Daniel prophesied of the ultimate victory of the saints of the Most High. (Daniel 7:27)
If you have been bom-barded by fear, stress, and the storms of life, there is a sure re remedy – trust in God. David reveals the remedy in Psalm 37:3-6 and Solomon reminds us in Proverbs 3:5-6. Apply these remedies for stress.
TRUST IN THE LORD AND DO GOOD. (Psalm 37:3-6) e Hebrew word for trust here is “batach” –
“to hide for refuge, to be con dent or sure; made to hope.” Worry negates trust. (Psalm 37:3) Step out in faith and begin to do good for someone. Take the focus o of self. Trust thrives in this atmosphere, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4) When you come to have absolute belief in the good-ness of God you develop a rock solid faith.
David reveals another secret to trust, “Commit your way unto the Lord; trust also in Him and He shall bring it to pass.” (Psalm 37:6) Let go and give your problems to God. Roll that heavy load you have been carrying onto the Lord. Trusting God brings you into the land of His promises; there will be plenty of sprovision; real-ization of the desires of your heart; and God’s interven-tion, righteousness, and justice. (Psalm 37:3-6)
TRUST IN THE LORD AND LEAN NOT ON YOUR OWN UNDER-STANDING. (Proverbs 3:5-6) Trust must lean whole-heartily on the Lord. How many times do we try to gure things out on our own instead of trusting God? We are admonished not to lean on our own un-derstanding. Instead of
asking God, “Why?” Tell Him, “I don’t understand but I trust you.” Corrie ten Boom said that if you are on a train and it goes through a dark tunnel, you don’t jump o . You trust there will be light at the end of the tunnel.” TRUST GOD!
Solomon tells us how to activate our trust in the Lord, “In all your ways ac-knowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:6) Acknowl-edge He has a plan and purpose and ask Him to guide you. Acknowledge He has everything under control and is Lord. If you trust Him, God promises to lead you on a straight path. Israel wandered in the wil-derness for 40 years because they did not trust in God.
On Jesus’ command, the disciples rowed across the Sea of Galilee, into a storm. But at the darkest moment Jesus came to them walking on the water. On the word of the Lord, Peter stepped out of the boat and walked to Jesus on the water. at is until he took his eyes o of Jesus and put them on the wind and waves. Jesus saved him and walked with Peter back to the boat. Jesus rebuked Peter, “O you of little faith, wherefore didst you doubt?” (Matthew 14:31) When Jesus stepped into the boat, “ e wind ceased.” I saw a post on Facebook with the caption, “My lifeguard walks on water!”
Take the remedy for stress and the storms of life. Trust in God with all your heart.Shalom,Cli SandersEagle Life [email protected]

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’re the rst sign in the Zodiac and like to take the lead wherever you go. But this time, you’d be wise to follow someone who has much to teach you.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your adversary hasn’t given up try-ing to undermine you. Continue to stay cool -- someone in authority knows what’s happening.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Spring brings a positive aspect for relationships. Paired Twins grow closer, while the single set nds new romance -- perhaps with a Leo or Libra.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Wavering aspects this week mean weighing your words carefully to avoid misunderstandings.LEO (July 23 to August 22) You could soon be on a new career path in pursuit of those long-standing goals, but don’t cut any current ties until you’re sure you’re ready to make the change. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A former colleague wants to re-establish an old professional connection. It would be wise to make the contact, at least until you know what he or she is planning. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A relationship that survived some rocky moments could be facing a new challenge. Deal with the problem openly, honestly and
without delay. Good luck.SCORPIO (October 23 to Novem-ber 21) A recent and much-ap-preciated change in the workplace inspires you to make some changes in your personal life as well. Start with a plan to travel more.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A friend needs your kind and caring advice, but you need to know what he or she is hiding from you before you agree to get involved.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your circle of friends continues to widen. Expect to hear from someone in your past who hopes to re-establish your once-close relationship.AQUARIUS (January 20 to Febru-ary 18) Your aspects favor the arts. Indulge in whatever artistic ex-pression you enjoy most. A work-place situation will, I’m pleased to say, continue to improve.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Warning! Your tendency to let things slide until the last minute could have a negative e ect on a relationship that you hope can de-velop into something meaningful.BORN THIS WEEK: You are both emotional and sensible. You enjoy being with people. Good career choices include teaching, perform-ing and the clergy.

• It was 20th-century American politician and diplomat Adlai Stevenson who made the following sage observation: " e hardest thing about any political campaign is how to win without proving that you are un-worthy of winning."
• According to a 2015 survey, more American adults would rather admit their weight than disclose their salary.
• You might be sur-
prised to learn that actor James Doohan, best known for his role as Scotty in the original "Star Trek" series, served in the Royal Canadian Artillery during World War II. He saw combat for the rst time at the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, where he led his men through a eld of anti-tank mines to reach higher ground. A er defensive positions had been established that
night, he was crossing between command posts when he was shot six times — by a Canadian sentry. One of the bullets hit his chest, but it was stopped by a silver ciga-rette case that his brother had given him.
• Researchers in the United Kingdom have developed what they're calling the "SlugBog" — a robot that eats slugs and is powered by the bio-gas created by their decay.
• If you've ever had to explain yourself the morning a er a raucous night out, you might be glad to know that the Tsonga people of south-ern Africa have a word that can be useful in
certain of these circum-stances. "Rhwe" means to sleep on the oor without a mat, while drunk and naked.
